We have arrested 97 Shiites over attack on officers in Abuja – Police (DailyTrust)

The Nigeria Police Force said it has detained 97 members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), known as the Shi’ite group, for prosecution, following the clash with the group in Abuja on Sunday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the clash resulted in the death of two policemen and three sustaining serious injuries.

NAN also reports that three patrol vehicles were set ablaze by the Shiites during the clash. Read more

Car thief caught disassembling Toyota Yaris for parts in Lagos (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested one Monday Julius for stealing a Toyota Yaris car in the Oshodi area of the state.

This was disclosed in the statement posted on X.com on Monday.

According to the statement, the 39-year-old suspect was arrested by officers of the Ilupeju division of the command after investigating the incident of the stolen car. Read more

The World Health Organization on Monday revealed a joint global plan with Africa’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to stop the spread of mpox after declaring it a global health emergency.

Ongoing mpox outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and its neighboring countries can be controlled and stopped but require aid and effort from across a broad worldwide spectrum, a WHO official says.

“Doing so requires a comprehensive and coordinated plan of action between international agencies and national and local partners, civil society, researchers and manufacturers, and our Member States,” WHO’s Director-General Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus wrote Monday in a news release. Read more

A man on Long Island in New York killed his three siblings and his niece Sunday before turning the gun on himself on the front lawn of the home he shared with his recently deceased mother, police said.

The man, Joseph DeLucia Jr., 59, believed he would be cut out of his mother’s will and displaced, Nassau County Police Detective Capt. Stephen Fitzpatrick said at a news conference Monday.

Police said DeLucia shot his siblings — Joanne Kearns, 69; Frank DeLucia, 71, and Tina Hammond, 64 — as well as Hammond’s daughter, Victoria Hammond, 30, on Sunday, two days after his mother’s funeral. DeLucia’s mother, Theresa DeLucia, died Aug. 19 at age 95 and her funeral was Aug. 23, Fitzpatrick said. Read more

Everybody Still Hates Chris, a new animated show from Comedy Central, will premiere in September.

Chris Rock will narrate the series as “Adult Chris,” with the younger version of Chris to be voiced by Tim Johnson Jr.

US Army Private King who fled to North Korea to plead guilty to 5 charges (StraitsTimes)

U.S. Army Private Travis King, who last year ran into North Korea and was taken into custody there, will plead guilty to five charges, including desertion, while taking responsibility for his conduct, his lawyer said in a statement on Monday.

The U.S. Army charged King with crimes ranging from desertion for running into North Korea in July to assault against fellow soldiers and solicitation of child pornography, Reuters reported late last year.

He was charged by the Army with 14 offenses under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, after his release from North Korean custody in September. Read more

French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday ruled out naming a left-wing government to end the country’s political deadlock, saying it would be a threat to “institutional stability”.

While Macron said he would start new talks Tuesday to find a prime minister, left-wing parties reacted with fury to his announcement, calling for street protests and the impeachment of the president.

He died aged 83 on Monday in Vienna, Austria, where he had been living for years after leaving the country.

The Olympic medallist’s death was confirmed in a Facebook post by his confidante, Rudolfine Soultan.

“My Jimmy died. I can’t say more about this right now because it’s just horrible. The day after tomorrow, we would have been together for 17 years,” Soultan wrote. Read more

The pro wrestler’s son Gunnar Eudy announced the death of his dad — born Sidney Eudy — in a Facebook tribute on Monday, Aug. 26.

“I am deeply saddened to share that my father, Sid Eudy, has passed away after battling cancer for several years,” Gunnar wrote about Sid, who was also known in the ring as Sycho Sid and Sid Justice. “He was a man of strength, kindness, and love, and his presence will be greatly missed.” Read more 

Man City agree £21.2m Saudi Arabia move for Cancelo (BBC)

Manchester City have agreed a £21.2m deal with Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal to sell defender Joao Cancelo.

Personal terms are not thought to be a problem, although Cancelo is yet to agree to the move.

If he does, the 30-year-old is expected to sign a three-year contract, ending his five-year stay at Etihad Stadium.
