President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has charged world leaders on the need to embrace multilateralism and cooperative partnership over protectionism in achieving global peace and security. 

Tinubu gave the charge on Thursday while addressing a high-level meeting on peace and security at the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), in Beijing, China, in his capacity as Chairman of ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government. 

The President commended the African Union’s consistent advocacy for global peace and its efforts towards realizing the vision of a peaceful and secure Africa, as outlined in Agenda 2063.  Read more

The Niger State Government reported that 70 households were affected by flooding in Mashegu and Magama Local Government Areas last weekend.

The Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Abdullahi Baba Arah, made a press statement on Thursday in Minna.

The heavy rain, which lasted for 11 hours from 2 am to 12 pm on Friday, 30th August 2024, caused the collapse of 187 buildings. Read more

Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), gave the assurance on Thursday, while briefing State House reporters after meeting with Vice-President Kashim Shettima, joined by the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari.

Kano judicial commission begins inquiry into #EndBadGovernance protests (Channels)

The Kano State Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the violent unrest that erupted in early August held its inaugural session on Thursday, September 5, at the Kano State High Court.

The panel, formed to investigate the killings, arson, looting, and destruction that occurred during the #EndBadGovernance protest, began its work with a call for public and media cooperation.

Governor Abba Yusuf inaugurated the 14-member commission on Monday, granting it a one-month deadline to deliver its findings. He assured the public of non-interference in the commission’s work. Read more

Lagos to monitor agric investments, says commissioner (Punch)

Agricultural investments will be monitored to track state support and hold everyone in the food value chain accountable, according to the Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture, Abisola Olusanya.

The commissioner disclosed this Wednesday at the Agriculture & Allied Group 2024 Symposium/Fair organised by the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Lagos.

Olusanya said the Lagos State Government aimed to build the largest food logistics hubs and other middle-level hubs to enable it to trace food items. Read more

HPV Vaccine Drive: Lagos takes awareness campaign to communities (Leadership)

The Lagos state government has embarked on a massive awareness campaign at grassroots level, as an effort to boost the uptake of the Human Papillomavirus Vaccine (HPVV).

Recall that Lagos state has reached 478,528 girls with the vaccine as at August, 2024, while aiming to reach one million girls with cancer-blocking HPV shot by year’s end.

To achieve this target, the director of health education and health promotion services, Lagos State Primary Healthcare Board (LSPHCB), Mrs. Honfor Grace Adesola, at a town hall meeting organised by LSPHCB and the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria with support from Pathfinder International, said there is need to tackle social media misinformation about the HPVV. Police arrest 22 suspects, recover ₦10m worth of stolen items in Katsina (Vanguard)

The Katsina State Police Command has successfully arrested 22 individuals suspected of theft and vandalism, recovering various exhibits and stolen items.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Abubakar Sadiq, one of the incidents occurred on August 24, 2024, at approximately 5:15 PM. Three suspects, Hamza Lawal, Safiyanu Usman, and Mariya Adamu, were arrested in connection with a criminal house trespass and theft incident in GRA Katsina. Read more

Linkin Park is back.

The rock band, whose lead singer Chester Bennington died by suicide in 2017, has a new lineup and plans for a new album and tour.

On Thursday, the group announced that Emily Armstrong, of Dead Sara, will sing for them — she’ll share vocals with veteran singer Mike Shinoda — while Colin Brittain, a producer and songwriter who has worked with Papa Roach, has joined the band as a drummer. Warner Bros. Discovery is making a big bet on live experiences like theme parks, studio tours, themed exhibitions and retail, creating a new division meant to capitalize on that opportunity.

The new division is called Warner Bros. Discovery Global Experiences, and will encompass both owned and operated experiences like its studio tours or exhibitions, as well as licensed entertainment, like its deals with Universal Destinations and Miral (which are the home of Harry Potter in theme parks).

Simon Robinson, COO of WBD Studios, will lead the new division, reporting to Bruce Campbell, WBD’s chief revenue and strategy officer, while continuing to report to CFO Gunnar Weidenfels on content operations. Read more

Father of suspect in Georgia school shooting arrested (BBC)

The father of a 14-year-old boy accused of killing four people at his high school in the US state of Georgia has been arrested.

Colin Gray, 54, is facing four charges of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second-degree murder and eight of cruelty to children, said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).

Authorities have charged his son, Colt Gray, with four counts of murder and said they plan to prosecute him as an adult. His first court appearance is due on Friday morning. Read more 

First mpox vaccines arrive in Congo after outbreak labelled ‘‘public health emergency’’ (ITV)

The first batch of mpox vaccine has arrived in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) capital three weeks after the World Health Organisation declared the virus a global emergency.

Manufactured by the Danish company Bavarian Nordic, the European Union (EU) donated 100,000 doses of the MVA-BN vaccine through its health emergency agency (HERA).

By August, more than 511 deaths had been recorded as a result of the virus in the DRC since the start of the year, and more than 14,000 cases. Read more
