Prof. Lai Oso, one of Nigeria’s foremost Communications scholars, is dead.

According to reports, Oso, a professor of Communications at the Lagos State University (LASU), died aged 67, in an accident while returning from a conference in Abraka, Delta State.

Idris Mohammed, one of his students, broke the news in a Facebook post on Sunday.

“It’s with great sadness and heavy heart that I bring to you the passing away of our very own Professor Lai Oso of the Mass Communication Department, Lagos State University in the evening today as a result of a ghastly accident on his way back to Lagos from Abaraka, Delta State. Read more 

KYC: CBN directs banks to demand additional information from customers (Sun)

The Central Bank of Nigeria CBN has directed banks to demand additional information from depositors, in a move aimed at deepening Know-Your-Customer (KYC) initiative.

In line with the new regulations, financial institutions are now to gather additional customer information, including social media handles, email addresses, telephone numbers, and residential addresses.

The new arrangement seeks to strengthen the identification process within the banking system. The CBN outlined these requirements in its recently-released document titled ‘Central Bank of Nigeria (Customer Due Diligence) Regulations, 2023.’ Read more 

NDLEA intercepts 5, 344 kg imported skunk consignments (Nation)

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have intercepted two imported consignments of Loud, a strong strain of cannabis, with a combined weight of 5,344.1 kilograms along the Epe-Lekki corridor and Alfa beach, Lekki area of Lagos State.

Director, Media and Advocacy, NDLEA Femi Babafemi announced this in a statement on Sunday.

Babafemi said based on credible intelligence, NDLEA operatives laid ambush for a white truck conveying 50 jumbo bags of the illicit substance weighing 2, 434.1kg along the Epe-Lekki expressway in the early hours of Monday 19th June. Read more

Lagos Deputy Governor Hamzat denies renouncing Nigerian citizenship (Channels)

The Lagos State Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, has denied renouncing his Nigerian citizenship.

According to a statement by the deputy governor’s media office, Hamzat described claims that he dumped his Nigerian citizenship as “misleading and inaccurate”.

Last Thursday, an immigration lawyer in the United States, Olubusayo Fasidi, told the Lagos Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal that Hamzat took an oath of allegiance in the US to renounce his Nigerian citizenship. Read more

British High Commissioner to Nigeria Richard Montgomery says the UK government’s new policy on the restriction of foreign student visas is aimed at managing the pressure on social services for scholars.

Montgomery, who said this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, explained that the policy was not aimed at discouraging Nigerian students studying in the UK.

Julian Sands search: Body found in California mountains where actor disappeared (Guardian)

Hikers have found human remains in a southern California mountain area where British-born actor Julian Sands disappeared five months ago, authorities said.

The body was discovered at around 10am on Saturday in wilderness near Mount Baldy and was transported to the coroner’s office for identification next week, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement.
