A houseboy, Emmanuel Akpan has said that he murdered her madam, Mrs Febisola Adedayo, because his townmate, Goodness Ekpe informed him that she’s keeping a huge sum of money in the house.
The suspect hacked her madam to death with a cutlass while she was sleeping at her house located at lfokanbale street, Ondo town, Ondo state.
Vanguard gathered that the deceased was a food canteen operator in Ondo town before her untimely death.
Akpan and Goodness were later apprehended at a village in Ogun state where police detectives trailed them to after committing the dastardly act. Read more
Police arrest popular Nollywood actor for alleged defilement (Independent)
The Lagos State Police Command on Thursday said it has arrested a popular Nollywood actor, Olanrewaju James otherwise known as Baba Ijesha for alleged defilement.
The Police said the case of defilement was reported against the actor on 19th April, 2021 by Princess Adekola Adekanya and alleged defilement of a minor for seven years.
Spokesman for the Command, SP Adejobi Olumuyiwa in a statement made available to our correspondent stated that: “The case of defilement was reported on 19th April, 2021 by one Princess Adekola Adekanya ‘f’ at Sabo Police Station and transferred to the Gender Unit of the State CID, Panti, Yaba Lagos for proper investigation

Lagos to generate $10b in agriculture investment by 2025 – Sanwo-Olu (Guardian)
The Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Thursday said that the state was expected to generate $10 billion in the agriculture sector in the next five years.
Sanwo-Olu said this during the official inauguration of the five-year Agricultural and Food Systems Roadmap in Lagos.
He said that most of the investments were expected to be private sector-driven with the needed infrastructure provided by government.
”The projection is that the total investment in the agricultural sector from the government, private sector, donor agencies and development partners will run into over $10 billion in the next five years. Read more
Abiodun rewards best LASU student, others with houses, cash (Independent)
Governor Dapo Abiodun has awarded the best graduating student of the Lagos State University, Oladimeji Sotunde, a two bedroom bungalow and a cash price of two million naira.
The Governor also awarded the winner of the Globa Open Mathematics Tournament, Faith Odunsi, a laptop and an endowment fund of five million naira.
Abiodun also said that his administration would be motivating the Institute of Technology, Igbesa that won the Most Compliant Institution in keeping to guidelines of admissions with the sum of one million Naira.

Bandits kidnap two nurses in Kaduna (Punch)
Some bandits in the early hours of Thursday attacked Idon General Hospital in the Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State, kidnapping two nurses on night duty.
It was gathered that the hoodlums stormed the hospital through the fence, shooting indiscriminately and in the process took away two nurses.
The incident is coming on the heels of bandits’ attack on Greenfield University along the Kaduna – Abuja highway in Chikun Local Government Area of the state, killing a staff member of the institution while several students were abducted.
The Chairman of Kajuru local government area, Casfra Caino, who confirmed the incident to newsmen on Thursday, urged residents of the area to remain calm. Read more
PDP laments fresh killings in Zamfara, Kaduna, others (Vanguard)
The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday decried Tuesday night’s massacre of no fewer than 30 Nigerians in simultaneous bandit attacks on four villages in two local government areas of Zamfara state.
This is as the party bemoaned the killing of a staff member as well as the abduction of an unknown number of students of Greenfield University in Kaduna state, the same Tuesday night.
In a statement signed by its spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, the PDP described as saddening the worsening security situation in the country which is attributed to the failure of President Muhammadu Buhari-led government to demonstrate leadership competence.

NCC arrests five suspects over SIM cards fraud (Punch)
The Nigerian Communications Commission on Thursday announced the arrest of five suspects for allegedly engaging in the fraudulent registration and sales of Subscriber Identity Module cards.
It said the arrest was carried out by a joint team from the Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement Department of the commission, operatives of the Department of State Services and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in the Wuse area of Abuja.
It disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday by the Director, Public Affairs, NCC, Ikechukwu Adinde.
The statement read in part, “The arrested suspects were subsequently handed over to the NSCDC Federal Capital Territory Command, Wuse, Abuja for further investigation with respect to the allegations leveled against them.” Read more
KASU students reject tuition fees increase by Kaduna Government (Guardian)
According to a statement by the Governor’s Spokesman, Mr Samuel Aruwan, the KASU branch of ASUU confirmed that the branch had joined the nation-wide strike as full members of the national union.
Students of Kaduna State University (KASU) on Thursday rejected the tuition fee increase from between N24,000 and N26,000 to from N150,000 to N500,000 by the State Government.
The students rejected the hike in Kaduna during a meeting with the students’ representatives, organised by the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr Terhimba Wuam.
Mr Abdulrazak Shuaibu, a medical student who spoke on behalf of the students, said that the tuition fees was increased from N26,000 to N150,000 for students in Faculty of Arts, Management and Social Sciences. Read more
Again, fire guts Delta police headquarters (Punch)
Barely four weeks that a section of the Delta State police headquarters was gutted by fire, another section of the headquarters on Thursday was engulfed by fire.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the fire, which razed the control room of the command around 2 pm, caused panic among police officers and passersby.
The fire was said to have destroyed properties with millions of naira at the police headquarters.

Biden: This will be ‘decisive decade’ for tackling climate change (BBC)
US President Joe Biden has told a major summit that we are in a “decisive decade” for tackling climate change.
The US has pledged to cut carbon emissions by 50-52% below 2005 levels by the year 2030.
This new target, which was unveiled at a virtual summit of 40 global leaders, essentially doubles their previous promise.

Russia to withdraw troops from deployment on border with Ukraine, Moscow confirms (RT)
Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu has announced that troops deployed in the west and south of the country in recent days will soon begin returning to base, saying they have now passed tests of their combat readiness.
The chief of the country’s military revealed on Thursday that a number of units of the regular army and airborne divisions had been transferred to the area, near the shared border with Ukraine, as part of surprise military exercises. The buildup had caused alarm in Kiev, and been cited by Western nations as a potential precursor to an invasion, which the Kremlin repeatedly denied.
According to Shoigu, “the goals of the sudden inspection have been fully achieved. The troops demonstrated their ability to ensure reliable defense of the country.”
As a result, he has now ordered commanders to “plan and begin the return of troops to their places of regular deployment, beginning from April 23.” Read more
Akayed Ullah: Times Square subway pipe bomber jailed for life (BBC)
A man who set off a pipe bomb during rush hour in a New York subway station has been sentenced to life in prison.
Akayed Ullah, 31, detonated the bomb in Times Square station, which is the busiest in New York City, on 11 December 2017.
He later claimed he had only wanted to kill himself and was not acting on behalf of the Islamic State (IS) group.
US Circuit Judge Richard Sullivan described the attack as a “truly barbaric and heinous crime”. Read more
Medical student blinded in horror acid attack (DailyStar)
A 21-year-old woman has been partially blinded in a “planned” acid attack that has left her struggling to eat or drink because her throat is so badly damaged.
The attacker threw “a dark coloured substance” over student doctor Nafiah Ikram as she was getting home from work.
Her father, Sheikh Ikram, says that if she hadn’t received help as quickly as she did, Nafiah could have been killed.
“If I was not home if my wife was not home… it would be maybe too late for her to even survive,” he said. Read more

A female teacher from Lamar Elementary in Greenville, Texas has been suspended after she texted a photo of her foot on a black pupil’s neck to the boy’s mother on the same day Derek Chauvin was convicted of murdering George Floyd.
The unnamed teacher reportedly sent the photo – which shows the boy on a hard floor as the teacher puts her foot directly on his neck – as a joke to his mother, with whom she was friends, on the same day former police officer Derek Chauvin was convicted of murdering black man George Floyd by placing his knee on his neck.
His mother told NBC 5 that, though she originally “didn’t think anything of it,” and laughed and “moved on,” the picture “then began to bother” her, and after she showed it to the rest of her family they “got really upset about it.” Read more
NASA’s rover makes breathable oxygen on Mars (BBC)
An instrument on NASA’s Perseverance rover on Mars has made oxygen from the planet’s carbon dioxide atmosphere.
It’s the second successful technology demonstration on the mission, which flew a mini-helicopter on Monday.
The oxygen generation was performed by a toaster-sized unit in the rover called Moxie – the Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment.
It made 5 grams of the gas – equivalent to what an astronaut at Mars would need to breathe for roughly 10 minutes. Read more
EU confirms it won’t be ordering more AstraZeneca Covid-19 jabs as Europe mulls legal action (RT)
A spokesman for the European Commission has said that no decision has been made as to whether the body will pursue legal action against the Anglo-Swedish firm but confirmed reports it won’t purchase any more of its vaccine.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, a European Commission spokesman said that the EU had decided against taking up an option to buy 100 million more Covid-19 shots from AstraZeneca.
The commission’s contract with the Anglo-Swedish pharmaceutical company saw 300 million shots ordered with an option to buy a further 100 million. The spokesman said that this option had already expired, confirming previous reports, adding that there was no intention to purchase more jabs from the company.
The spokesman also said that there had been no decision as to whether Brussels would be commencing legal action against the drugs company who has previously stated it would not be making a profit from the sale of its Covid-19 vaccine during the pandemic. Read more

Britain’s Simon Yates has extended his lead in the Tour of the Alps after finishing third on stage four.
The Team Bike Exchange rider outlasted his rivals on the final mountain climb toward the end of the 169km stage to Pieve di Bono in Italy.
But he was joined on the final descent by Pelle Bilbao of Bahrain-Victorious, who won the stage, and Aleksandr Vlasov of Astana Premier-Tech who came second.

The LA Dodgers have announced there will be a special section for vaccinated fans for their game against the San Diego Padres on Saturday, although anyone in attendance hoping for a return to full freedoms will be disappointed.
“Additional seats are now available in our Loge level’s fully vaccinated fan section for Saturday’s game against the Padres!” the Dodgers announced on their website this week.
“The fully vaccinated fan section allows for more flexible seating options while maintaining safety within the fan zone and throughout the stadium.”

Premier League turnover drops 9% amid coronavirus pandemic (Sky)
The Premier League saw turnover drop by nine per cent and there was a reduction in payments to clubs in the fall-out from the Covid-19 pandemic, accounts for 2019-20 have revealed.
The figures up to July 31, 2020 were published at Companies House on Thursday.
The period covered is for the first of a three-year cycle of broadcasting and other commercial rights contracts.The company’s strategic report noted underlying turnover had fallen by nine per cent which was “largely due to the rebates payable to broadcasters following a suspension of play during the season” because of the coronavirus pandemic.
