Heartbreak for Japan as Croatia win penalty shootout to reach World Cup quarterfinals (ESPN)

Four years after their stunning World Cup run in Russia, Croatia are looking to do it all again. They knocked out Japan 3-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Al Janoub Stadium to move into the quarterfinals. They’ll face either Brazil or South Korea in a quarterfinal on Friday.

The Croatians did it by at least partially turning Japan’s favored script on its head, falling behind against the tournament’s upset artists just before half-time then levelling with a resounding header from Ivan Perisic early in the second half. Neither side could make a convincing claim for deserving the win in extra time, and Dominik Livakovic saved the first two Japanese penalties to give Croatia a hammerlock on the shootout. After another Livakovic save, Mario Pasalic blasted the final penalty past Shuichi Gonda, and the Croatians poured onto the field.

Japan, the tournament’s consensus Cinderella after beating Germany and Spain in the group stage, went ahead just before the break with a close-range blast from Daizen Maeda, and it felt like another upset could be in their hands. But after a first half in which they were often too casual in possession, Croatia was more precise after the interval and had the better chances as the game went on. Read more

“I can hit golf balls. It’s the walking that just hurts,” Woods said. “The goal is to play just the major championships and maybe one or two more. I mean, that’s physically all I can do … I don’t have much left in this leg, so gear up for the biggest ones and hopefully lightning catches in a bottle, and hopefully I’m up there with a chance to win, and hopefully I remember how to do that.” Read more

Nike ends relationship with Kyrie Irving (HuffPost)

Nike officially ended its relationship with Kyrie Irving on Monday, a month after the NBA star shared a link to an antisemitic film on social media.

“Kyrie Irving is no longer a Nike athlete,” the company said in a brief statement.

Irving had a longstanding and lucrative deal with the brand beginning in 2014. Nike suspended that relationship in November and said it wouldn’t release its latest Irving-branded shoe after he sparked a firestorm on social media for tweeting a link to the movie. The film contains hateful tropes about Jewish people as well as false claims that the Holocaust didn’t happen.

Irving initially declined to disavow antisemitism, saying he meant no harm sharing the link, and he was suspended by the Nets for at least five games beginning last month. The team said at the time he was “unfit to be associated” with the franchise. He later issued an apology on Instagram, saying: “To All Jewish families and Communities that are hurt and affected by my post, I am deeply sorry to have caused you pain, and I apologize.” Read more
