Nigeria’s anti-graft agency, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Wednesday said music star Naira Marley cannot be released because of ‘overwhelming evidence’ against him. “There is overwhelming evidence against Naira Marley; so we can’t afford to release him on administrative bail like Zlatan and the three others,” EFCC spokesman Tony Orilade said. “Naira Marley is still in our custody and will be charged to court soon and we will make the charges known in an official statement soon.” Read more

A group, The Citizens Advocacy for Social and Economic Rights, on Wednesday unfolded lawful measures to compel the Independent National Electoral Commission to issue Certificate of Return to Governor Rochas Okorocha. The Executive Director of CASER, Frank Tietie, told journalists in Abuja that his group was already mobilising constituents of Imo West Senatorial District to embark on simultaneous protest against INEC in Abuja and Imo State. He said the mass action would start immediately until the INEC issued the certificate to Okorocha as the validly elected Senator for Imo West district. Read more

President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to jet out of the country on Thursday, 16th May 2019 for Umrah. According to a statement by the media aide to the President, Shehu Garba, the visit is at the instance of Salman Bin Abdulaziz, the ruler of Saudi Arabia and Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques to perform the Umrah (lesser pilgrimage) in the Kingdom. A Kano High court presided over by Justice Nasiru Saminu has ordered Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi ll to maintain status quo in respect of the interim order issued against the governor on May 10. Justice Saminu ordered all the parties in the suit to maintain the status quo, pending the hearing of motion on notice. The court also ruled that the order issued on May 10, restraining Kano state Government from appointing four new Emirates in the state was still subsisting, pending the determination of the motion on notice. Nigerien soldiers missing after ambush (Guardian)

A search was underway Wednesday for several Niger soldiers missing since an ambush by armed men the day before left several of their colleagues injured, security sources said. A military patrol was ambushed Tuesday afternoon near the village of Tongo Tongo in the western Tillaberi region near the border with Mali. One of the military vehicles had set off an explosive device. Several troops were injured and evacuated to the capital Niamey, a security source told AFP. Read more

Alleged money laundering: EFCC re-arraigns Justice Ajumogobia, Obla (Punch)

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Wednesday re-arraigned a Judge of the Federal High Court, Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia, and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Godwin Obla, over alleged money laundering charges. EFCC charged Ofili-Ajumogobia and Obla on 18 counts bordering on conspiracy, unlawful enrichment, retention of crime proceeds and money laundering. The commander 1 Brigade Nigerian Army, Linus Udeagbala has called for effective inter-agency collaboration between civil-military and paramilitary organizations to combat insecurity within their areas of responsibilities. Udeagbala, who spoke while receiving the new director of State Security Service (SSS), Zamfara State Command and the state coordinator, Defence Health Maintenance Limited (DHML) during courtesy visits to the Brigade.
