Why Tribunal sacked Osun gov, Adeleke (Punch)

Governor Ademola Adeleke-led administration in Osun State came to a hurting halt on Friday as the Osun Election Petitions Tribunal sacked him from office. His stay in office lasted a mere 62 days!

While annulling the July 16 Osun governorship poll results, the tribunal held that the Independent National Electoral Commission did not comply with the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as well as the Electoral Act as amended.

The PUNCH reports The Independent National Electoral Commission had declared Adeleke, the Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate, the winner of the July 16 election. Read more 

I don’t have social media accounts – JAMB Registrar, Prof Oloyede (Vanguard)

The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Prof Is-haq Oloyede, has distanced himself from friend requests being sent from social media accounts, purportedly from him, saying he does not own or operate any social media accounts.

Oloyede said this in a statement, Friday,by the board’s Head, Public Affairs and Protocol, Dr Fabian Benjamin.

The statement read:”The attention of the Board has been drawn to a LinkedIn account purported to be the account of the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board(JAMB), Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, and sending friend requests to members of the public. This is a ploy initiated with the sole aim of defrauding gullible members of the public. Read more 

2023: I’ll replace sharing formula, fight hunger – Peter Obi (DailyTrust)

Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr Peter Obi, has said his government will not continue with the “handout” of sharing formular but implement a production formular where every Nigerians would be productive for positive impacts.

Obi said this on Friday at a Leadership Townhall held at the University of Abuja.

“You must tell of your abilities and you must start to pull people out of poverty. The only way to do this is to move your country today from consumption to production. Nigeria can be self-sufficient on food production and change its trajectory of a wasteful economy largely dependent on mere sharing allow revenue when it could actually task the federating units to up their games for the growth of the economy. Sanwo-Olu present as students hold mega rally for APC in Lagos (Channels)

A coalition of students from different tertiary institutions across Lagos state gathered at the Onikan stadium to show their support for the incumbent governor of the state, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Representatives from the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Lagos State University(LASU), Lagos State Polytechnic of Technology(LASPOTECH), and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) amongst others were present.

They presented the governor a certificate of endorsement, pledging that 4,1 million students in the state will cast their votes in support of him.

RTEAN wants Lagos govt to reverse action on members (Guardian)

Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) has called on Lagos State Government to reverse its decision of not allowing passenger vehicles from the northern part of the country into Lagos State.

RTEAN’s Secretary-General, Mr Yusuf Adeniyi, made the call in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Friday.

Adeniyi said Kwara and some other northern states branches of RTEAN received information that the Lagos State government had stopped the operation of passenger vehicles coming from the northern Part of the country. Read more 

IGP recommends ex-PPRO Mba, Owohunwa as Ogun, Lagos CPs (Punch)

The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, has recommended Frank Mba and Idowu Owohunwa to the Police Service Commission for the office of Commissioners of Police, Ogun and Lagos Commands respectively, The PUNCH reports.

This was contained in a document exclusively obtained by our correspondent on Thursday, signed by the Force Secretary, AIG Hafiz Inuwa, on behalf of the IGP.

Ogun So-Safe arrests 19-year-old boy for burgling church, houses (Independent)

Operatives of Ogun State So-Safe Corps have arrested a 19-year-old teenager, identified as Abiodun Elegbede, for allegedly burgling a church and two other houses in Ago Araromi community in Ilaro, Ogun State.

It was gathered that the suspect’s arrest followed a distress call received by the corps from residents.

The So-Safe Corps spokesman, Moruf Yusuf said that the corps, at about 2 am on Thursday, received a distress call requesting prompt intervention to arrest Elegbede, a resident of Ajegunle, Ipobe, in Ipokia Local Government Area. Read more

Hassan Sule, son of Nasarawa State governor, Engr. Abdullahi Sule, has died, aged 36.

According to a terse statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ibrahim Addra, Hassan died on Thursday.

Fans campaign for Aaliyah to be inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (HipHopHero)

Aaliyah fans are currently campaigning to have the late singer inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. 

The late R&B star tragically died in a plane crash in 2001 despite expressing concerns about boarding the light aircraft that appeared to be in a state of disrepair before take-off. Since that tragic end, her popularity has continued to grow. 

Now, her fans are thinking that it’s about time that her work was honoured by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They have since launched a petition that has amassed more than 7,000 signatures and counting. As it stands, it only needs around 300 more to hit its target. Read more

Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni set to star in Sony’s It Ends With Us adaptation (THR)

Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni will star opposite each other in Sony’s adaptation of It Ends With Us, based on Colleen Hoover’s best-selling novel, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Baldoni is set to direct and executive produce the film through his Wayfarer Studios banner, alongside his partner, Andrew Calof. Lively, Hoover and Steve Sarowitz will also serve as EPs on the project, with Alex Saks producing for Saks Picture Company, along with Wayfarer’s Jamey Heath.

Christy Hall, who most recently co-wrote the Netflix series I Am Not Okay With This, penned the screenplay and will also produce. Read more

Claire Foy says love for Imelda Staunton enticed her back to The Crown (Standard) 

Claire Foy has said she reprised her role as the Queen in the latest series of The Crown because of her love for Imelda Staunton and because “it is a lovely thing to do”.

The actress, 38, appears in a flashback scene that opens the fifth series of the Netflix drama, showing the late Queen’s visit to Clydebank in 1953 to launch the Royal Yacht Britannia.

Azerbaijan evacuates embassy staff from Iran after security chief killed (MEE)

A gunman shot dead a security guard and wounded two other people at Azerbaijan’s embassy in Iran on Friday, in an attack Baku branded an “act of terrorism”.

“The attacker broke through the guard post, killing the head of security with a Kalashnikov assault rifle,” Azerbaijan’s foreign ministry said.

The Azeri foreign ministry said the attack was a result of Tehran ignoring concerns and calls for improved security measures at the embassy.

Former Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Chargers linebacker Jessie Lemonier died on Thursday aged 25, according to a statement from the Lions.

“We are shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of former Detroit Lion Jessie Lemonier,” the team said on Twitter.

“Jessie was a model team mate and wonderful young man who is gone far too soon. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time.”

The Chargers also paid tribute to Lemonier, saying he was “gone too soon.” Read more

The Nigeria Football Federation and the Football Association of Zambia have again postponed the double-header friendly between Nigeria’s U-20 team and their Zambian counterparts.

According to the Director of Media and Communications of the NFF, Ademola Olajire, the games will now be played February 3 and 6 in Abuja.

Wolves defender Ki-Jana Hoever has signed for Stoke City on loan for the rest of the season.

Hoever, 21, is the Championship side’s third January loan signing following the arrival of Wolves keeper Matija Sarkic and Bersant Celina from Dijon.

The Dutch right-back joined Wolves from Liverpool in September 2020.

Having made 25 appearances in his first two seasons with Wolves, Hoever went on a full season loan to PSV Eindhoven but it was cut short this week. Read more

Jake Paul will fight Tommy Fury on February 26 in Saudi Arabia.

Paul rose to fame on social media but has moved into boxing and amassed a 6-0 professional record, with four of those victories coming by stoppage.
