The Nigeria Police Force says it is not arresting popular musician, Timi Dakolo, and wife, Busola, but merely inviting them for questioning. The clarification was made barely minutes after the wife of the President, Aisha Buhari, called the attention of the Inspector-General of Police to the purported attempt to arrest the couple. In a letter of invitation which was posted on his Instagram page, Dakolo alleged that the Police were attempting to arrest him and his wife for making “false allegations” against Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo, the Senior Pastor of the Commonwealth of Zion Assembly. Nigeria’s vice president Yemi Osinbajo said the government is engaging traditional rulers on modalities to employ in improving security in the country. The ongoing consultations with the traditional leaders was disclosed in a statement by the Nigerian government. “Determined to develop and reinforce effective strategies towards addressing security concerns around the country, FG has begun a series of consultations with a number of leading traditional rulers with the aim of securing the peace and effective maintenance of law and order,” the government said in a statement. Maj.-Gen. Bulama Biu, the General Officer Commanding 7 Div, Nigerian Army, has renewed call to Boko Haram insurgents to surrender their arms. Biu made the call at a feast organized in his honour on Saturday at the Command Guest House Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri. Nigeria abductions: Four Turkish nationals kidnapped in Kwara State (BBC)

Four Turkish nationals have been abducted in western Nigeria, local police have told the BBC. The four, who are construction workers, were kidnapped by gunmen at a bar in Kwara State on Saturday night. An operation to try to rescue them is under way. No group has said it carried out the abductions. Last week pirates attacked a cargo ship off the coast of Nigeria and kidnapped 10 Turkish sailors. Their fate remains unknown. Read more

NNPC records N6.33bn trade surplus in May —Report (Punch)

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation said it recorded a trade surplus of N6.33bn for the month of May, 13 per cent higher than the N5.60bn surplus made in April. The corporation disclosed this in its Monthly and Operations report released on Sunday in Abuja. It attributed the rise to the increase in gas and power output and surplus recorded by the corporation’s downstream entities like NNPC Retail, Petroleum Products Marketing Company, Nigerian Pipelines Security Company and Duke Oil. Nigerians decry ban on sale of Sniper (Guardian)

Nigerians have decried the recent ban on the sale of pesticide, especially Sniper and other agricultural formulations in open market following increased cases of suicide and misuse of the products. They told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the ban might not help in reducing incidences of suicide, adding that it would affect the daily bread of some people who depend on the sale of the insecticide. Eight die, 22 injured as Taliban bombs Police checkpoint, hospital (Punch)

Twin attacks claimed by the Taliban hit a Police checkpoint and hospital in north-western Pakistan on Sunday, killing eight people, including four policemen. Militants first opened fire at a checkpoint in the city of Dera Ismail Khan. A suicide bomber then detonated their explosive device outside a hospital gate upon the arrival of an ambulance carrying two Police officers wounded in the first attack. Read more

Hong Kong protests: Police fire tear gas at demonstrators (BBC)

Riot police have fired tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters in Hong Kong following a large pro-democracy rally in the city. Officers charged demonstrators who threw objects at police lines. The clashes came after marchers ignored a designated finish line, continuing on to China’s central government offices and throwing eggs at the building. Portugal wildfires: Huge blazes force evacuations (BBC)

Hundreds of firefighters have been deployed to central Portugal where several wildfires have forced people to flee their homes. One person has suffered serious injuries. At least seven firefighters have also been hurt. Helicopters and planes have been used to douse three blazes in the mountainous Castelo Branco region, where one village has been evacuated. Costa Rica on alert after 19 die from tainted alcohol (Punch)

Alcohol tainted with potentially toxic levels of methanol has killed 19 people in Costa Rica, where authorities issued an alert against drinking some half-dozen brands. The Ministry of Health issued the national warning Friday while also updating the death toll.
