Why we’re strategic in impounding commercial vehicles — LASTMA (Vanguard)

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) says it impounds commercial vehicles sometimes outside the area where their drivers commit offences as a matter of strategy.

The Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA Mr Adebayo Taofiq, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday, in Lagos.

He said that the belief that commercial buses were ignored many times when committing offences was wrong, as the authorities had strategies to bring them to book. Read more

30 Katsina children freed 24 hours after abduction (Channels)

Thirty children abducted by bandits at Kasai village in the Batsari Local Government Area of Katsina State have been freed. 

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Katsina State Police Command, ASP Abubakar Sadiq, confirmed this to Channels Television on Tuesday.

He noted that their release followed a concerted effort by the command, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, which he believed yielded a positive result. Read more

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has slammed some leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State, labelling them as “political buccaneers”.

Wike, who was governor of the oil-rich South-South state from May 2015 to May 2023, blasted PDP leaders in the state for declaring support for his former political son, Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Suspected cultists kill 1 in Ogun (Vanguard)

Tragedy struck on Sunday night, in Ijeun Tuntun area of Abeokuta, Ogun State, as some suspected cultists, who reportedly came on motorcycle shot dead one Olumide Ifeoluwa popularly called Tescom.

A resident of the area, who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the incident, said Olumide, an alleged member of Aiye, a notorious cult group, was killed at a car wash in the area where he used to stay and relax in the evening.

He was said to have been in company of some people when his assailant swooped on him and shot him on the head.

The source said: “The whole thing happened at 6 p.m. Tescom as he was fondly called was at the car wash, I think he was always there in the evening to relax with some of his friends. Read more

Child opens fire at primary school leaving 1 pupil dead and 2 seriously hurt (Metro)

A 12-year-old child has died after a shooter opened fire at a primary school in Finland at the start of lessons.

Three children, all aged 12, were reported wounded at the Viertola primary school in the city of Vantaa, north of the capital, Helsinki.

It was later confirmed that one of the pupils has died after this morning’s attack. Two others sustained serious injuries. Read more

Iran’s supreme leader declared on Tuesday that “Israel will be punished” for the attack that killed members of the Revolutionary Guards, including two generals, at the Iranian embassy in Damascus. The attack and rhetoric have raised concern that Israel’s war in Gaza threatens to escalate major conflict across the region.

8 passengers stranded on African island after Norwegian cruise ship left without them (NBC)

A dream cruise vacation has turned into a nightmare for eight passengers left stranded on the African island of São Tomé and Príncipe after their ship left without them because they were late to return from a private tour.

The tourists — six from the U.S. and two from Australia — were aboard the Norwegian Dawn, a Norwegian cruise line ship, which departed from Cape Town, South Africa, on March 20, for a 21-day voyage up the coast of Africa set to end in Barcelona, Spain, on April 10.

Donald Trump posts $175m bond in civil fraud case (People)

Donald Trump has secured a $175 million bond in the civil fraud case brought against him by the New York Attorney General.

On Monday, Trump’s attorney, Alina Habba, confirmed that the former president, 77, posted the bond in the case in order to secure his assets from seizure while the case is under appeal. “He looks forward to vindicating his rights on appeal and overturning this unjust verdict,” Habba said in a statement, according to NBC News.

Trump faced allegations from New York Attorney General Letitia James, whose office claimed that he falsely inflated his net worth by billions of dollars to secure more favorable loan terms and lower insurance premiums.
