A commercial bus driver, Adewale Oseni, is seeking justice after he was allegedly brutalised by a police officer identified simply as Supol Akeem attached to Makinde Police Station in Oshodi, Lagos.

Oseni told PUNCH Metro on Tuesday that he was returning from the food vendor where he had gone to purchase food for his three children on July 14 at about 10 pm when the officer accosted him.

He said efforts to show him the food he bought and also appeal to him were ignored by the police officer also said to be identified as Spider. Read more

Ajaero: NUT asks teachers to prepare for nationwide strike (Vanguard)

Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, has directed teachers nationwide to down tools and begin an indefinite strike should the Police arrest the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, President, Joe Ajaero.

Recall that the Intelligence Response Team, IRT, arm of the Nigerian Police Force, NPF, had Monday, August 19, invited Ajaero, for questioning over “Criminal Conspiracy, Terrorism Financing, Treasonable Felony, Subversion and Cybercrime”.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police, IRT, in a letter of invitation, said Ajaero should appear at the IRT office on August 20, warning that he would be arrested if he failed to honour the invitation. Read more

Enugu to pull down properties used for kidnapping (Channels)

Enugu State Government on Tuesday revealed plans to pull down properties, whether private residences or business premises, used for kidnap purposes.

Disclosing this in a statement, the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Chidiebere Onyia, said the step was in continuation of the determined effort of the Governor Peter Mbah Administration to rid the state of all forms of crimes and criminalities.

He warned property owners to take necessary steps to know their prospective tenants before leasing properties to them. Read more

Lagos diverts traffic for overnight repairs on Osborne road (Punch)

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to divert night traffic on Sura Ramp inward Osborne, Lagos Island area of the state to facilitate the asphaltic laying of the section of the road.

This was disclosed in a statement posted on X.com on Tuesday.

According to the statement, the repair work will begin on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, between 10pm and 4am on Thursday, August 22, 2024. Read more

A group of prominent political leaders from the North emerged yesterday, named the League of Northern Democrats (LND), which said it would convene a strategic summit to revive the region’s political and economic place in Nigeria.

The group, which declared its intention to unite and reposition the North as a leading force in Nigeria’s political landscape, further revealed that its general concern is the development of Northern Nigeria, stressing that it does not represent the interest of anybody.

The Court of Appeal in Abuja, on Tuesday, affirmed the reinstatement of Philip Shaibu as the Deputy Governor of Edo State.

On July 17, Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, reinstated Shaibu to the position.

Murder suspect Collins Jumaisi Khalusha escapes from police custody in Kenya (Sky)

A man who police said confessed to killing 42 women and was being detained over the discovery of dismembered bodies in Kenya’s capital has escaped from custody.

Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, 33, was being held at a police station in Nairobi after a court allowed detectives seven more days to investigate his alleged crimes before charging him.

Early on Tuesday morning, Khalusha was said to have escaped along with 12 other inmates after they cut through wire mesh in the cells and scaled the perimeter wall. Read more

Phil Collins may be working on new music for the first time in over two decades.

The Genesis frontman hasn’t released an album of original music since Disney’s Brother Bear soundtrack in 2003. One year prior to that, he released his last solo studio album ‘‘Testify’’.

Now it seems that new music may be on the horizon. The revelation came via a Facebook post last night (August 19) from record producer and journalist Simon Napier-Bell. Napier-Bell had interviewed Collins at his home in Switzerland for a new documentary about The Marquee Club. The iconic venue, which notably hosted the first-ever live performance from the Rolling Stone, closed its doors in 2008 after 50 years. It was later revived for one night only last year. Read more

Adrian Newey has lifted the lid on his agreement with Christian Horner that will see him remain involved with Red Bull even after he officially leaves the company in 2025.

Red Bull announced in May that Newey will leave in early 2025, having masterminded the team’s astronomical success in F1 with the likes of Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen.
