A Lagos-based beautician, Diana Kafaru, has accused her husband, Temidayo, of allegedly assaulting her and molesting their five-month-old baby at their residence at the Bricks Court Estate in the Lekki area of the state.

Diana alleged that she found her husband on May 8, 2020, molesting their baby by putting his manhood in her mouth.

Diana, who accused Temidayo of having anal sex with her without her consent, further alleged that her husband also raped their housemaid.

The 24-year-old told PUNCH Metro that after the matter was reported to the state Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team, Temidayo refused to honour the invitation of the agency, adding that efforts to arrest him by policemen attached to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Panti, Yaba, were frustrated by one AIG Dilbal Yakadi. Commuters call on Sanwo-Olu to fix Iyana-Isolo road abandoned for two years (Guardian)

Road users around Iyana-Isolo area of Lagos State have called on the state and local governments to repair a bad spot that has been left to deteriorate for more than two years before more lives will be lost to the dreaded spot.

The damaged portion of the road started as a small pothole after the NIPOST office, beside the end of the bridge that connects Mushin with Isolo, but after months of neglect, it has turned to wider and deeper crater and has claimed some lives.

In December 2018, a passenger on a motorcycle was not so lucky at the ditch when a truck went into the gully, got stuck and while trying to force its way out, rolled back and hit an okada rider coming behind. Though the rider was severely injured, the passenger died on the spot. Read more

Police disperse petrol price hike protesters in Lagos (Nation)

The police in Lagos on Wednesday dispersed protesters against the increase in pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

The protesters under the umbrella of the Joint Action Front (JAF) converged on Ojuelegba, Lagos to demand a reversal of the hike in fuel price and electricity tariff. Armed security operatives dispersed the crowd.

They carried placards with inscriptions such as “Buhari’s regime hiked petrol price in 2016 from N86.50 to N145 now hiked again to N162″; “Reject hike in electricity tariff now”; and “Capitalist policies of privatisation and deregulation create mass suffering”.

They urged other Nigerians to join the struggle to “end puppet regime of IMF and World Bank”. Read more

Sanwo-Olu clamps-down  on human traffickers, sets up special taskforce, gives marching order (Vanguard)

Determined to curb the menace of human trafficking and irregular migration in the state, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tuesday inaugurated a special State Task Force on Human Trafficking.

Speaking during the inauguration of the task force at the Lagos House, Ikeja, Governor Sanwo-Olu urged all members of the task force to see their appointment as a call to service.

The Governor also charged members of the Lagos State Task Force on Human Trafficking to come up with brilliant ideas, innovations and policies that will assist the State Government in curbing the menace of human trafficking. Read more

UNILAG visitation panel concludes probe, submits report today (Punch)

The Special Visitation Panel set up by the Federal Government to look into the management crisis at the University of Lagos has concluded its work and is set to submit report of its findings on Thursday (today) to the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu.

A media invitation from the Federal Ministry of Education, by its Director of Press and Public Relations, Ben Bem Goong, said the panel would submit the report to the minister.

The government had set up the panel to look into the crisis rocking UNILAG, following the removal of its Vice Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, by its governing council. Read more

FEC okays new agency for recovered loot (Nation)

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the establishment of the Proceeds of Crime Recovery and Management Agency Bill.

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, stated this on Wednesday after this week’s virtual FEC meeting.

According to Malami, the bill is intended to put in place a legal and institutional framework through which all recovered stolen assets are pooled and managed under an agency.

He explained that once the bill becomes law and the agency is established, it would see to proper documentation and management of such recovered assets, thereby guarantee transparency and accountability. Read more

Lovers re-arraigned for alleged N17.5m charcoal fraud (Punch)

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibadan zonal office, on Wednesday, re-arraigned one Alice John and her boyfriend, Fadi Alloush, before Justice Bayo Taiwo of the Oyo State High Court, Ibadan, for fraud involving the sale of charcoal.

The lovers were re-arraigned on three counts of conspiracy, stealing and obtaining the sum of N17.5m under false pretences.

The offences were said to be contrary to Section 390 of the Criminal Code Laws, Cap 38, Laws of Oyo State. Read more

Court remands 5 men for allegedly kidnapping 10 year-old girl (Vanguard)

A High Court in Jos on Wednesday ordered that five men, accused of kidnapping a 10-year-old girl, be remanded in a correctional centre, pending the determination of their case.

The police charged Felix Moses, Yahaya Abubakar, Sani Saleh, Anas Adam and Sale Ya’uwith conspiracy, kidnapping and possession of illegal arms.

Justice Samson Gang gave the order after the five suspects pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Gang, however, adjourned the case to Nov. 5 for hearing. Read more

Banks to phase out old cheque books December 31 (Punch)

Deposit Money Banks have started to notify their customers that they will phase out old cheque books and will no longer honour such by December 31, 2020.

They have also urged customers to request new cheque books.

One of the banks, Access Bank, disclosed this to its customers through an email on Wednesday, entitled ‘Important updates on chequebooks and NEFT transfer.’

Coronavirus: South Africa eases strict lockdown as cases drop (BBC)

South Africa, which had one of the world’s earliest and strictest lockdowns, has announced a further easing of anti-coronavirus measures.

From 20 September an overnight curfew will be reduced, gatherings will be allowed at 50% of a venue’s capacity, and alcohol will again be on sale.

“We have withstood the coronavirus storm,” said President Cyril Ramaphosa in a televised address to the nation.

Qatar rules out normalising relations with Israel (Aljazeera)

Normalising relations with Israel “can’t be the answer” to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, a Qatari official has said, adding that Doha will not join other Gulf Arab states in establishing diplomatic ties with Israel.

“We don’t think that normalisation was the core of this conflict and hence it can’t be the answer,” Lolwah al-Khater, Qatar’s foreign ministry spokesperson said on Monday in an interview with Bloomberg.

“The core of this conflict is about the drastic conditions that the Palestinians are living under” as “people without a country, living under occupation,” she said. Read more

Israel bombed Gaza on Wednesday after militants fired rockets through the night, overshadowing the signing of landmark normalisation deals with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain in Washington.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused the militants of seeking to stop the peace deals, Israel’s first with an Arab country since 1994.

But Gaza ruler Hamas warned Israel it faced an escalation if the bombing continued, barely two weeks after a renewed Egyptian-brokered truce halted near-nightly exchanges across the border through August. Read more

Uber’s self-driving operator charged over fatal crash (BBC)

The back-up driver of an Uber self-driving car that killed a pedestrian has been charged with negligent homicide.

Elaine Herzberg, aged 49, was hit by the car as she wheeled a bicycle across the road in Tempe, Arizona, in 2018.

Investigators said the car’s safety driver, Rafael Vasquez, had been streaming an episode of the television show The Voice at the time.

Ms Vasquez pleaded not guilty, and was released to await trial. Read more

Stricken tanker’s captain to face charges in Sri Lanka (Aljazeera)

Sri Lanka will file negligence and pollution charges against the Greek captain of an oil tanker that leaked fuel off the island nation’s coast after a week-long fire.

Some of the 1,700 tonnes of heavy fuel oil on board the New Diamond poured into the Indian Ocean, prompting a large effort to contain a slick that was roughly two kilometres (1.2 miles) in length.

Its 270,000-tonne cargo of crude oil was unaffected by the fire. Read more

More than 200 prisoners escape jail in Uganda (BBC)

More than 200 prisoners have escaped from a jail in north-east Uganda, officials say, bringing the local town to a standstill while security forces try to track them down.

The inmates reportedly killed a soldier after they broke out of the facility in Moroto before heading for the hills.

The army and prison officials are pursuing the escapees, who reportedly made off with 15 guns and ammunition.

An army spokesperson said two inmates had been captured and two killed. Read more

The plastic topper worn by Christopher “Notorious B.I.G.” Wallace in his last photo shoot sold for $594,750 (including Sotheby’s “buyer’s premium” fees and taxes) during an auction Tuesday night — despite its original $6 price tag.

At the auction house’s first hip-hop memorabilia auction — which featured a one-of-a-kind Def Jam Recordings jacket, a triptych of pioneering DJs painted by Fab 5 Freddy and Judith Leiber’s crystal-encrusted handbag inspired by a boombox — the crown’s original purchaser said he didn’t buy the royal-rig for its gold content and embedded jewels.

“This crown is a novelty item; I bought it at a place on Broadway called Gordon’s,” Barron Claiborne, a 52-year-old photographer who lives in Brooklyn, told The Post. Claiborne owned the crown and used it in the stunning Rap Pages magazine cover-photo he took of Biggie in 1997. “Without Biggie, the crown would not be worth [six figures]. I only paid six bucks for it.”

Basketball star marries man she helped free (BBC)

WNBA star Maya Moore has married Jonathan Irons – the man she helped free from prison following his wrongful conviction for assault and burglary.

Irons was released in July after 23 years in prison, his conviction having been overturned in March.

Moore had paused her WNBA career in 2019 to focus on getting him free.

“We got married a couple of months ago and we’re excited to continue this new chapter of life together,” Moore, 31, told Good Morning America. Read more

Omagbemi turns down Falcons job, NFF shortlists five foreigners (Guardian)

United States-based former Super Falcons handler, Florence Omagbemi, has turned down an offer by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to return to the team’s technical crew. Omagbemi, who captained the Super Falcons for 16 years, was head coach when the team won the African Women’s Nations Cup trophy at Cameroun 2016. Her contract was not renewed by the NFF in December that year despite calls by some football loving-Nigerians to the NFF to do so.

A source close to Omagbemi’s family told The Guardian yesterday that the NFF offered the position of an assistant coach to her on Tuesday evening with an order to relocate from the United States to Nigeria immediately. Read more

National featherweight champion, Taiwo Agbaje, says he has resorted to collecting toll fee from drivers at the popular Ladipo market in Lagos to survive, in the wake of COVID-19, The PUNCH reports.

Agbaje, popularly known as Esepo, revealed that he lost millions of naira due to inactivity following the ban placed on boxing and other contact sports by the Federal Government.

Last month the FG lifted the ban on non-contact sports but insisted that contact sports like football, basketball, wrestling, boxing among others would remain banned until further notice. Read more

Neymar receives two-match ban as French league investigate claim he was racially abused (BBC)

Paris St-Germain forward Neymar has been banned for two games after being sent off against Marseille – but French football authorities will investigate his accusation of racial abuse.

The Brazil international was the last of five red cards in Sunday’s bad-tempered Ligue 1 match after he hit Marseille defender Alvaro Gonzalez.

Neymar later accused his opponent of racism on social media and urged the authorities to use VAR to investigate.

Gonzalez has denied Neymar’s claim.

FIFA have threatened the Federation of International Walking Football Associations (FIWFA) with legal action over their logo and plans to hold a World Cup.
