An 18-year- old man identified as Habeeb Aremu, has been reportedly stabbed to death in Ogun State.

He was allegedly stabbed by his uncle’s wife, Cynthia Olukiowu over a broken mirror.

The woman was arrested on Saturday by policemen attached to Agbado Divisional Headquarters after they received calls that a boy had been stabbed on the neck by his uncle’s 30-year-old housewife.

It was learnt that a misunderstanding ensued between the two when a mirror being used in the house got broken and the deceased was alleged to have broken it. Read more

Many injured, vehicles destroyed as rival Lagos schoolboys clash (Punch)

Some pupils of two secondary schools in the Meiran area of Lagos reportedly clashed on Friday after closing time, resulting in injuries on both sides.

Sunday Punch learnt that the warring pupils destroyed about three vehicles parked at the scene of the clash on Imulokanle Street, Meiran.

It was gathered that some residents had to summon up courage to disperse the teenagers, who reportedly wielded cutlasses, knives, axes, bottles and other weapons.

A resident of the area, who identified himself only as Babatunde, told our correspondent that one of the pupils apprehended by the residents was handed over to the police. Read more

NDLEA seizes 22,160kg worth of illicit drugs in Lagos (Channels)

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has seized over 22,160 kilograms of Codeine syrup, Methamphetamine and Skunk at the Apapa seaport and a notorious drug den in Mushin, Lagos State in two separate operations.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by Femi Babafemi, the Director, Media & Advocacy, NDLEA Headquarters, Abuja.

A total of 14,080kg codeine syrup (8,080 litres) and 4,352.43kg cold caps used to conceal the former in a 40ft container imported from India, were intercepted on Wednesday, February 2 at the Apapa port, while Cannabis and other drugs imported from Ghana and Methamphetamine weighing 3,727.72kg were seized in an early morning raid at Akala, Mushin.

17 suspects including five females were arrested in connection to the Mushin seizures. Read more

Lagos, South West states in darkness as Egbin loses 410MW after fire outbreak (Guardian)

Electricity consumers in Lagos and its environs may have to endure power black out for a while, as the Egbin power plant, which suffered a fire outbreak on Wednesday, is now functioning at reduced electricity capacity.

The fire outbreak had reduced electricity capacity on the national grid by 630 megawatts, creating electricity rationing in Lagos and some southwest states.

The Management of Egbin Power PIc. had reported that fire incident occurred at the Power Plant on Wednesday, February 2nd, 2022, at around 4:20pm, adding that the incident was successfully controlled by a team of Egbin firefighters working in collaboration with firefighters from the Nigeria Gas Company in Egbin.

Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company had issued a statement telling customers that the outage experienced in certain parts of Lagos was due to the development. 

While the utility company noted that areas like Iju, Abule Odu, Egbeda, Oregun, Anifowoshe, Ago, Okota, Oke Afa, Ajao, Amuwo, Ikosi, Mende, Ogudu, Bariga, Oworo, Gbagada and Ilupeju were affected, it noted that the company was making efforts with its partners in the electricity value chain to improve the situation. FPSO Explosion: ‘1 dead, 3 missing’ (DailyTrust)

Rescuers have recovered a yet-to-be-identified dead body close to the scene of a Floating Producing Storage and Offloading (FPSO), unit that exploded on Wednesday at Escravos area of Delta State.

Similarly, three of the vessel’s crewmen have also been rescued in a nearby village by the rescuers deployed to the scene immediately after the incident occurred.

Daily Trust had reported that FPSO TRINITY SPIRIT, owned by Shebah Exploration & Production Company Limited (SEPCOL), exploded on Wednesday at Escravos, in Delta State.

A statement by the management of SEPCOL, signed by its Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Ikemefuna Okafor, issued on Sunday, said one dead body was found close to the scene of the incident while three crew members have been rescued. Read more

Gombe governor tasks stakeholders to create awareness on drug abuse (Guardian)

Gov. Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State has tasked stakeholders to embark on awareness creation activities on the ills of drug abuse to check the menace in the Northeast region.

Yahaya gave the charge at the inauguration of the North East Secretaries to the State Governments meeting, on Friday in Gombe.

He said the prevalence of drug abuse, its negative impact on public health and safety underscored the need for all hands to be on deck to curtail the menace.

The governor said that his administration in collaboration with NDLEA and other stakeholders had scaled up a campaign aimed at tackling drug abuse in society. Read more

Sen. Victor Lar, Campaign Director, Ali-Modu Sheriff Campaign Organisation, has debunked allegations that Sen. Ali-Modu Sheriff, has links with the Boko Haram sect.

Lar debunked the allegations in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Sunday in Abuja. He said that Sheriff, a frontline All Progressives Congress (APC) national chairmanship aspirant, a two term former governor of Borno and a former senator, had no links with Boko Haram.

Lar also said that the insinuations that Sheriff’s tenure as APC’s next national chairman if elected, would be characterised by litigations because he had cases with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commision (EFCC) could not be true.

“Sheriff’s name is not on the list of sponsors of Boko Haram released by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), security agencies have been investigating him since he left office in 2011 and had not found him guilty of the allegations .

Egypt media tycoon charged with sexual assault, human trafficking of orphan girls (NewArab)

An Egyptian businessman was charged on Saturday with “human trafficking” and “sexual assault” a month after he was arrested over accusations that he abused seven girls in an orphanage he founded.

Media and real estate tycoon Mohamed El-Amin was arrested on 8 January and held in custody pending investigations into accusations that he “sexually assaulted children using force”. He now faces up to 25 years in prison if found guilty.

The case came to public attention after a Facebook page accused the owner of the Al-Mustaqbal group- formerly the owner of the CBC television network before it was sold in 2018- of sexually assaulting young girls.

A judiciary source told AFP Saturday that “witnesses confirmed the testimonies of the victims” during the investigation, referring to girls at an orphanage opened by El-Amin in Beni Suef, about 100 kilometres (60 miles) south of Cairo. Read more

The line-up for the 2022 Inkcarceration Music & Tattoo Festival has been announced, with Korn, Evanescence, Disturbed and Breaking Benjamin set to headline.

The three day event will take place from July 15-17 at the Ohio State Reformatory, an old prison that was made famous in the film The Shawshank Redemption.

Other acts appearing at the event include Lamb of God, Papa Roach, Three Days Grace, Seether, Code Orange, Sleeping With Sirens, Lacuna Coil and more.

US restores sanctions waiver on Iran nuclear non-proliferation (MEMO)

The administration of US president Joe Biden has waived sanctions on Iran’s nuclear capabilities, in an attempt to open up the possibility of a settlement on the nuclear deal.

According to media reports, the waiver was revealed by an unnamed State Department official who stressed that it was a necessity for the success of the ongoing nuclear talks in the Austrian capital Vienna.

“The technical discussions facilitated by the waiver are necessary in the final weeks of JCPOA talks,” the official said, specifying that “Absent this sanctions waiver, detailed technical discussions with third parties regarding disposition of stockpiles and other activities of non-proliferation value cannot take place.”

The waiver – which was initially rescinded by the administration of former President Donald Trump in May 2020 – allows for the continuation of the non-military elements in Iran’s nuclear programme by no longer threatening sanctions on countries and companies from China, Russia or Europe which assist Tehran in that regard. Unpaid Salaries: NPFL threatens to expel Heartland (Leadership)

Following representations by the Management of Heartland FC providing proof of approval of payment of salaries of the players and other staff by the Imo State government, the club has been granted a further extension of the deadline to comply with the decision of the League Management Company (LMC).

In a letter dated 28th January, the club requested additional ten working days to enable it to perfect the payment of salaries overdue.

Consequently, the LMC ruled that Heartland FC has been given up to close of business of February 18th, 2022 to complete all the processes and clear all the outstanding overdue payables to the players and officials and submit evidence to the LMC.

LMC warned the club that a breach of this condition will result in six points being automatically deducted from points already earned by the Club and matches of Heartland FC will be automatically suspended within the framework of the NPFL. Read more
