Woman dies while being delivered of twins on Lagos street (Punch)

A woman, Mrs Bunmi Muri, has died along with her twin babies, around a park on Ogooluwa Street, in the Oke Oshodi area of Bariga, Lagos State, on Sunday.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Bunmi was on her way to visit her husband who worked on Ogooluwa Street, when she went into labour.

It was learnt that some residents took her to a corner to have the babies.

However, the 35-year-old was said to have died together with the twin babies.

A resident, Felix Chidi, said Muri was successfully delivered of one of the babies and died while attempting to bring out the second baby.

He said, “From what we gathered, she was going to collect something from her husband who worked in a park. Read more

Catholic church, Adeboye’s son lead service at #EndSARS protest grounds (Guardian)

After a week of activities that included processions, speeches, candle night parade, prayer walks, Jumat prayers and vigils, #EndSARS protesters yesterday gathered at the epicentre of the campaign, Lekki tollgate for service.

The service was conducted by Catholic Church of Divine Mercy, Lekki. This was after another service was held at the church earlier on Admirality Way, Lekki and protesters had beamed the live service of Pastor Sam Adeyemi on giant screens at the toll plaza.

The tollgate service was led by Most Senior Pastor, Monsignor Pascal. He urged protesters to remain peaceful in their quest for good governance and better policing. He urged God to touch their hearts as they protested and not fellow man. Read more

Youths raise N4.1m to buy prosthetic leg for #EndSARS protester without limb (Punch)

Youths have raised ₦ 4,119,570.00 to buy a prosthetic leg for a lady who joined the #EndSARS protest in Abuja, Jane Obiene.

As of 01.15pm when our correspondent visited the donation page, 727 people had contributed.

Information on the page showed that the target was to raise ₦ 1,500,000 in 30 days but that was surpassed within three hours.

A Twitter user, Aproko Doctor @aproko_doctor, had shared the image of Obiene, asking Nigerians to donate through a link.

The image showed Obiene marching with hundreds of protesters bearing crutches. Read more

Lekki protesters hand phone thief to police (Guardian)

The #Endsars protesters at Lekki on Saturday arrested and handed over a co-protester, Yusuf Lawal, aged 25, of Ojuelegba area of Lagos, to the police for allegedly stealing a phone.

The protesters, who were angry over the incident, descended on him and gave him some beating before they agreed to hand him over to the police at Maroko Police Station for prosecution.

Though the stolen phone has not been recovered as the suspect passed on the phone to his fleeing gang members, the spokesman for the police command, Muyiwa Adejobi, said the police were working on the useful information gathered from him to track down his gang fleeing members. Read more

Youths calling for a total overhaul of the Nigeria Police Force have launched an online radio, Soro Soke, The PUNCH has learnt.

The channel, through effective and timely communication, is expected to aid the coordination of #EndSARS protests nationwide.

NCC arraigns 7 suspected notorious Pirates (Guardian)

The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) has arrested and arraigned seven suspected and notorious pirates in Court.

Mr. John Asein, Director General (DG) of the NCC, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria.

(NAN) on Sunday in Yola, where he will present a copyright certificate to a prominent stakeholder in the state.

Asein said that the suspects had “terrorised” authors and owners of other intellectual works in the country.

He said that their arraignment followed intelligence reports on their activities.

North’s stand on SARS validates calls for restructuring – Ozekhome (Vanguard)

Renowned constitutional lawyer and human rights activist, Mike Ozekhome has said the position of prominent leaders on the recent disbandment of the Special Anti- Robbery Squad, SARS, by the federal government has again validates the need to urgently restructure the country.

Ozekhome who spoke against the backdrop of remarks credited to the chairman, Northern Governors’ Forum and governor of Plateau state Simon Lalong that the North is against the dissolution of SARS, noted that in preferring to stick with SARS, the nation should now be restructured to enable the component parts decide on what works for them.

Attempt on my life during EndSARS protest pre-planned– Oyetola (Guardian)

Gov. Gboyega Oyetola of Osun on Sunday said the attempt on his life by assailants during Saturday’s protest against the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squard (SARS) in the state was pre-planned.

Oyetola, in a state broadcast on Sunday in Osogbo, said preliminary investigation revealed that the commando style in which the assailants carried out their attack justified his claim that  the act was pre-planned.

According to him, the attempt on his life could not have been planned by the youths who constitute over 60 per cent of the voters who elected him into office. Read more

Covid-19: Italy tightens rules after coronavirus cases surge (BBC)

Italy has announced a new raft of measures to tighten restrictions amid a surge in coronavirus cases.

A mask-wearing PM Giuseppe Conte said the measures were needed “to avoid a new lockdown”.

Mayors will get powers to close public areas after 21:00 and the opening times of restaurants and the size of groups allowed will tighten.

The moves came as Italy recorded its highest daily infection rate for the second day in a row. Read more

Deadly car bomb attack outside Afghanistan police headquarters (AlJazeera)

At least 12 civilians have been killed and more than 100 people wounded after a car bomb targeting an Afghan police headquarters in the western province of Ghor went off on Sunday.

The attack took place in Feroz Koh, the capital of Ghor, a province that has not seen much violence compared with some other regions of the conflict-wracked country.

The ministry of interior said the car bomb detonated in front of Ghor police headquarters at about 11am local time (06:30 GMT).

“The terrorists detonated an explosives-filled car… as a result 12 civilians were killed and more than 100 people were wounded,” the interior ministry said. Read more

China’s economy continues to bounce back from virus slump (BBC)

China’s economy continues its recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic, according to its latest official figures.

The world’s second-biggest economy saw growth of 4.9% between July and September, compared to the same quarter last year.

However, the figure is lower than the 5.2% expected by economists.

China is now leading the charge for a global recovery based on its latest gross domestic product (GDP) data. Read more

Russia among top 10 countries leading global digital banking revolution (RT)

A new survey by Deloitte has found that Russian banks are among the world leaders in terms of digitalization of their services, exceeding the global average in five out of the six key indicators.

The so-called global benchmarking study on digital banking maturity provided a comprehensive outside-in ’mystery shopper’ assessment of 318 retail banks in 39 countries.

According to the report, Russia is among the top ten countries leading the way in global digital banking, along with Japan, Singapore, Norway, Spain, Belgium, Turkey, Poland, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

The research showed that in terms of information availability to the client, the average value of the index in the world is 45 percent, while in Russia it is 51 per cent. Read more

Dame Julie Walters reveals she has quit acting for good after battling cancer but says Mamma Mia is the only film that could entice her back. 

The 70-year-old screen icon was diagnosed with stage three bowel cancer in 2018 and battled the disease for 18 months before beating it.

Thousands rally to support beheaded French teacher (BBC)

Thousands have attended rallies across France in support of Samuel Paty, the teacher beheaded after showing cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad to his pupils.

People in the Place de la République in Paris carried the slogan “Je suis enseignant” (I am a teacher), with PM Jean Castex saying: “We are France!”

A man named as Abdoulakh A was shot dead by police on Friday after killing Mr Paty close to his school near Paris.

Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk wants to return stronger after learning he needs surgery on the knee injury he sustained in the 2-2 draw at Everton.

The 29-year-old Netherlands defender was unable to continue following a rash challenge by Toffees keeper Jordan Pickford in the first half on Saturday.

It is unclear how long the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury will keep him out for.

“I’m ready for the challenge ahead,” he said in a post on social media.

Captain Memphis Depay set-up three goals as Lyon beat Strasbourg 3-2 away  in Ligue 1 on Sunday to claim their first win since August.

Netherlands’ attacker Depay was the provider for Tino Kadewere and twice for Karl Toko Ekambi in the first half before Habib Diallo and Jean-Eudes Aholou scored for the hosts.

Ian Wright and Alan Shearer have condemned Sergio Aguero after the Manchester City striker grabbed assistant referee Sian Massey-Ellis during the side’s 1-0 victory over Arsenal.

Bencharki earns Zamalek first leg win (BBC)

Ashraf Bencharki scored for Zamalek in the 18th minute to give the Egyptians a precious away win against Raja Casablanca ahead of next week’s second leg.

Zamalek of Egypt secured an away victory in the first leg of their African Champions League semi-final, beating Raja Casablanca 1-0 in Morocco on Sunday night.

A first-half header from Moroccan Achraf Bencharki, a former player of Raja’s city rivals Wydad, was enough to give Zamalek the victory ahead of next weekend’s second leg in Egypt.

His goal in the 18th minute came off a cross from Ahmed Sayed that dipped beyond Raja goalkeeper Anas Zniti.
