A housewife, Bilkisu Muhammad on Monday prayed a Shari’a court sitting at Magajin Gari, Kaduna to recover N70,000 from her former husband, Kamal Rabiu.

The complainant said she lent N75,000 when they were married and he paid back N5,000 only.

She said that Rabiu, who divorced her, also took away a 6kg gas cylinder, food flask, washing bowl, wrapper, jug, and cup.

In his reply, Rabiu, said he is aware of the loan. Read more

Serving Overseer of Citadel Global Community Church, formerly called The Latter Rain Assembly, Lagos, Pastor Tunde Bakare, has dared an unidentified official of the Federal Government to come after him based on his recent public pronouncements.

Speaking on Sunday during a sermon in his church, Bakare said: “I dare you to come after me since that is the usual style now. You might have done it to others; you are about to learn a lesson if you touch me.”

He added: “If you know what I have done in secret, bring it to the open. I dare you to come after me if you can. I worked with you; I worked for you; I supported you to get there (where you are). When I talk now, I now have a smelly mouth.

“I’m not interested in meeting you any longer; no more visits. Now, it is war, because Nigeria must be set free.” Read more

Comedienne, Adekola Adekanya, also known as Princess, on Monday, narrated how she met embattled Nollywood actor, Olanrewaju Omiyinka, aka Baba Ijesha, before the Lagos State Special Offences Court in the Ikeja area.

According to Princess, she met Baba Ijesha in 2008 at an event and the two decided to start making comedy skits together.

The comedienne also claimed Baba Ijesha wooed her in the process of their work relationship but she rejected his proposal.

Princess said she got close to the actor afterwards, especially after her marriage crashed around 2013. Read more

Sanwo-Olu calls for prayer, ethnic, religious harmony for Lagos devt (Vanguard)

Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Monday, commended residents for their cooperation with the current administration and called for continued support and prayer, religious harmony, saying they are critical to the development of the state.

Sanwo-Olu, made the remark at the year 2021 Eidul-adha celebration on Sunday, held at Lagos House, Alausa, Ikeja, to mark successful celebration of Eid-el Kabir.

He therefore, sought the people’s prayers and support for his administration, saying, “without it, it wil be difficult for this administration to achieve its THEMES development agenda aimed at ensuring a Greater Lagos for all.”

The governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Mrs. Folasade Jaji, called for harmonious relations between the religious groups in the state for peace in the state. Read more

Carbon-monoxide reduction: Lagos launches bike share scheme (Vanguard)

Lagos State Government, in collaboration with a private organization, Messrs Awabike, has launched a pilot phase for Lagos Bike Share Scheme, with 1,000 bikes, line with the United Nations sustainable development goals of reducing green gas emission in the state.

Speaking on the occasion held in the premises of Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa, Ikeja, Director- General, Office of Public-Private Partnerships, Mr. Ope George, said, said the scheme aimed at reducing emission of carbon-monoxide being emitted by vehicles on the road if many people key into the initiative as well as running rough roads.

The bike-share scheme is a service in which bicycles are made available for shared use to individuals on a short-term basis for a token fee without incurring the costs and responsibilities associated with ownership.

George, represented by Senior Special Assistant to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Corporate Communications and Stakeholders Engagement, Mrs. Oseyemi Oluwatuyi stated: “The partnership between Messrs. Awabike and the Lagos State Government on a bicycle (bike) share scheme is in line with the Lagos State Smart City initiative and addresses several United Nations sustainable development goals whilst fulfilling the Traffic and Transportation management aspect of the Lagos State Government’s THEMES agenda. Dunamis 5: Court orders DSS to release worshipers (Guardian)

Federal High Court in Abuja, on Monday, ordered the Department of State Services, (DSS) to release five worshipers who were arrested at Dunamis International Gospel Centre on July 4 for wearing t-shirts with “Buhari Must Go” on them.

Ben Manasseh, Anene Udoka, Henry Nwodo, Samuel Larry and Samuel Gabriel were arrested for wearing the t-shirts to a Sunday Service at Dunamis International Gospel Centre Headquarters in Lugbe.

Justice Anwuli Chikere gave the order following separate ex parte applications filed on their behalf by their lawyer, Mr Tope Temokun.

They had sued the DSS, President Muhammadu Buhari, the church’s pastor Pastor Paul Enenche and others for alleged unlawful arrest and detention. Read more

DSS gave ‘logistics difficulties’ as reason for not bringing Kanu to court –Lawyer (Punch)

The Department of State Services gave “logistics difficulties” for not producing the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, in court on Monday, a member of the IPOB leader’s legal team, Aloy Ejimakor, has said.

The lawyer stated this in a chat with The PUNCH on Monday.

The PUNCH had earlier reported that Kanu was absent from court when his trial resumed at the Federal High Court Abuja on Monday.

Justice Binta Nyako, therefore, stated that the trial could not continue in the absence of Kanu since he was not available to stand his trial. Read more

Iniubong Umoren: Suspect pleads guilty to murder of Akwa Ibom job seeker (Guardian)

Uduak Akpan, a suspect in the murder of Iniubong Umoren, the Akwa Ibom woman who was lured out of her home with a fake job interview, has pleaded guilty to the offence.

Akpan was arraigned alongside his father arraigned before a State High Court judge in Uyo.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge of rape.

Umoren was raped and killed in April in the outskirts of Uyo by Akpan who the police in Akwa Ibom State described as a serial rapist. Read more

Sunday Igboho’s trial resumes behind closed doors in Cotonou (Punch)

Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly called Sunday Igboho, is currently being tried behind closed doors at the Cour D’Appel De Cotonou.

Journalists and his supporters were barred from the court proceeding, The PUNCH was told.

However, his supporters said they were not harassed nor sent out of the court premises.

The Beninese court had last Thursday adjourned Igboho’s case till Monday after his five lawyers failed to convince the prosecutor that he had no case to answer. Read more

US pop star Pink has offered to pay the fines handed out to the Norwegian women’s beach handball team, after they wore shorts like their male counterparts instead of bikini bottoms.

The team was fined 1,500 euros (£1,295) for “improper clothing” at the European Beach Handball Championships last week.

“I’m very proud of the Norwegian female beach handball team for protesting sexist rules about their uniform,” tweeted the singer on Sunday.

Alexa now has a male voice called Ziggy (Metro)

Amazon has quietly released a new voice option for its Alexa smart speakers.

For the first time, users can opt for a male virtual assistant.

The masculine version – which is called ‘Ziggy’ – is currently only available in the US. However, it’s expected Amazon will roll it out globally in the near future.

To change over to Ziggy, anyone with an Amazon Echo speaker can choose the option in the Alexa app. Read more

Hospitals overwhelmed in Senegal’s capital as virus surges (Guardian)

Senegal’s health ministry said Monday that hospitals in the capital Dakar were “close to saturation” due to a surge in Covid-19 patients, with overworked medical personnel facing burnout. 

The West African country has suffered a third wave of virus infections in recent weeks, with cases rising from a few dozen a day late last month to about 1,700 in July. 

Health authorities have registered most of the new cases in Dakar, a city of over three million people.

The national director of public health institutions, Ousmane Diallo, told AFP that the third wave had been more severe than the previous two. Read more

John, 54, and his husband Scott Gill were thoroughly unimpressed with the feature film and branded it ‘utter s***e’ while even tagging Shyalaman and Universal Pictures.

Jason Statham was a top-level diver years before becoming movie hardman (Metro)

Years before Fast & Furious and The Expendables, Jason Statham was actually a top level diver.

The action movie star used to lead a very different life, and he even represented England at the Commonwealth Games back in 1990.

He was 23 at the time, and although he competed in the 1m, 3m and 10m events, he didn’t take home a medal at the games in Auckland, New Zealand.

Although Jason never realised his Olympic dream – no, he wasn’t quite Tom Daley – which he’s admitted in the past is still ‘a bit of a sore point’, with both Seoul 1988 and Barcelona 1992 either side of his Commonwealth year. Read more

Dieter Brummer: Home and Away actor dies aged 45 (BBC)

Australian actor Dieter Brummer, best known for his role as Shane Parrish on TV soap Home And Away between 1992 and 1996, has died aged 45.

Brummer was found dead at a house in Sydney on Saturday by New South Wales police responding to a welfare call.

The force said his death is not being treated as suspicious.

In a statement on Monday, Brummer’s family said: “We lost our handsome, talented, funny, complicated and beloved Dieter.

“He has left a massive hole in our lives and our world will never be the same” it added. Read more

Nigeria’s national men’s basketball team D’Tigers will be hoping to bounce back from their opening loss to Australia when they host Germany on Wednesday at the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The Mike Brown-tutored side failed to make the best of starts as they lost to Australia as the gulf between both sides were not as wide as was the case when both sides met in Las Vegas last week in a warm-up tie.

In Las Vegas on July 13, D’Tigers lost by 32 points to the Boomers but the difference was 17 points as they lost 84-67 to the Aussies yesterday.

It could all have been different though if D’Tigers had been more proficient with their shooting, especially from the free-throw line where they made just 13 of their 24 attempts – or 54.2 percent. The Australians, meanwhile, made 18 of their 20 attempts from the charity line. Read more

Raphael Varane: Manchester United edging towards deal for Real Madrid defender (BBC)

Manchester United are edging towards a deal with Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane after more positive talks over the weekend.

Varane, 28, has told Real he has no wish to extend his current contract, which still has a year to run.

United are in discussions with the France international’s camp and Real.

No agreement has been reached yet over a fee but there is an increasing feeling that talks will eventually reach a successful conclusion. Read more

Japanese mixed doubles pair Jun Mizutani and Mima Ito claimed their country’s first ever Olympic table tennis gold medal on Monday, ending years of Chinese dominance with a remarkable comeback victory on home soil.

China had won every Olympic title in the sport since a men’s singles triumph for South Korean Ryu Seung-min in the 2004 Athens Games, but Xu Xin and Liu Shinwen blew a two-game lead in a thrilling final in Tokyo.

Mizutani and Ito raced into an 8-0 lead in the deciding game and closed it out when Xin hit a return into the net, with the Japanese pair winning 5-11, 7-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-9, 6-11, 11-6.

Tottenham sign Gil with Lamela moving to Sevilla in exchange (Guardian)

Tottenham Hotspur have signed Bryan Gil from Sevilla, with Erik Lamela joining the Spanish club as part of the deal, the Premier League side announced on Monday.

Gil has agreed a contract until 2026 with the north London club.

The 20-year-old winger will link up with his new teammates at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium following the conclusion of the football tournament at the Tokyo Olympics, where he is representing Spain. Read more

Neymar: Paris St-Germain forward and Barcelona settle legal dispute (BBC)

Barcelona have reached an out-of-court agreement with their former player Neymar to end a legal dispute in “amicable fashion”.

Brazil forward Neymar, 29, claimed Barca refused to pay him £37.2m in owed loyalty bonuses after his £200m move to Paris St-Germain in 2017.

Barca then started legal proceedings to get him to pay back the £8m he received when he signed a new deal in 2016.Last June, a Spanish court ordered Neymar to pay Barca £6.1m. Read more
