An altercation in the Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State has resulted in the death of a 65-year-old woman, Oladega Morenike, allegedly pushed to her death by her neighbour, Abigail Bankole.

The incident reportedly occurred around 4.20pm on Thursday, when a fight broke out between the two women at Isunba Street in Ipokia.

According to the police, Bankole allegedly pushed Morenike, causing her to hit her head against a wall and collapse. Read more 

Nigeria’s oldest Catholic Priest Oleghe dies at 104 (Leadership)

The Catholic Diocese of Auchi has announced the passing away of Rt. Rev. MSGR Thomas Oleghe, who died on Sunday at the age of 104 in Auchi, Etsako West local government area of Edo State.

A terse statement signed by the Bishop of Auchi Diocese, Gabriel Dunia, said Oleghe was the oldest Catholic Priest in Nigeria, adding that the church had resolved to hold a funeral service for him on Wednesday.

The statement read, “With gratitude to God for a life well lived on earth, I hereby inform you of the passage of the Rt. Rev. MSGR Thomas Oleghe, the oldest Catholic Priest in Nigeria as at today, to the great beyond at about 2.30am this morning on the 24th of November, 2024. He is of the Diocese of Auchi. Read more

A group of Nigerians in the diaspora has written an open letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, seeking intervention in a dispute over the demolition of WinHomes Estate in Okun Ajah, Lagos State.

The estate, developed by WinHomes Global Services Ltd, was allegedly demolished by officials of the Ministry of Works, led by Engr. David Umahi, without notice or compensation.

Ebonyi governor orders arrest of 6 for diverting health ministry materials (Nation)

Ebonyi state governor, Francis Nwifuru, has directed the arrest and prosecution of Mr. Ndukwe Ayansi and five others over the alleged diversion of materials intended for the state’s ministry of health.

The directive was disclosed on Sunday in a statement by the Governor’sCchief press secretary, Monday Uzor.

According to the statement, Governor Nwifuru, while on his way to inspect ongoing projects, noticed a Toyota Dyna truck being loaded with registers, books, and other materials from the ministry of health’s warehouse. Read more

Lagos hails S’Court judgement nullifying National Lottery Act (Punch)

The Lagos State Government has applauded the judgment of the Supreme Court that nullified the National Lottery Act.

A statement by the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotosho, on Sunday, noted that the judgment reaffirmed the constitutional authority of state governments to regulate lotteries and gaming activities within their jurisdictions.

The statement added that the judgment is a historic victory for the rule of law, federalism, and the constitutional rights of states, stressing that the Supreme Court’s decision is a significant affirmation that the regulation of lotteries and gaming is a residual matter, falling squarely within the purview of state governments. Former Spy Kids franchise actor Robert Vito will not face felony charges related to a recent alleged domestic violence incident.

The former child star, 37, avoided being hit with a felony after the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office bumped his case down to the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office, according to TMZ.

The City Attorney’s Office only has the ability to file misdemeanor charges, and it is still unclear if he will face any of the less-severe charges. Read more

Opening in 3,888 theatres, Jon M. Chu’s adaptation starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande is the third biggest opening of the year to date behind Deadpool & Wolverine on $211m and Inside Out 2 on $154.2m. It also established the biggest opening weekend by a Broadway adaptation by some distance, eclipsing $31.1m set by Into The Woods in 2014.

Lebanon says 29 killed in Israeli strike on central Beirut (RTE)

Lebanon’s health ministry has said that the Israeli strike on central Beirut’s working-class Basta district yesterday killed at least 29 people, updating an earlier toll.

“The Israeli enemy strike on Basta al-Fawqa in Beirut killed, in an updated but still not final toll, 29 people and wounded 67 others,” the ministry said in a statement.

“Rubble is still being removed” from the strike site, it added. Read more

Italian police and social workers leave Albania after staffing empty migrant centres (Guardian)

Dozens of Italian police officers and social workers deployed by Italy’s far-right government in migrant centres in Albania have returned home, after it emerged that the facilities, praised as a model to reduce refugee arrivals, have been empty for weeks.

Just over a month after the much-publicised opening of the multimillion-euro detention centres for asylum seekers in Albania, which were supposed to receive up to 3,000 men a month, more than 50 police officers were moved back to Italy two weeks ago while dozens of social workers have left over the weekend, with their presence in Albania considered “needless”.

Since their opening on 11 October, only 24 asylum seekers have been sent to the centres in Albania, with the goal of repatriating them to their countries of origin. Five spent fewer than 12 hours in a detention centre, while the rest stayed for just over 48 hours. Read more

Wembanyama stars on return as Spurs beat Warriors (BBC)

Victor Wembanyama scored 25 points on his return as the San Antonio Spurs fought back for a 104-94 win over the Golden State Warriors.

The Spurs trailed by 17 late in the third but Wembanyama, who had missed San Antonio’s previous three games due to a knee injury, and rookie Stephon Castle helped the hosts rally in the fourth quarter

Six of Castle’s 19 points came during a late 11-0 run which swung the game in the Spurs’ favour and secured a third straight win.

In Saturday’s other NBA games, the Milwaukee Bucks held on to beat the visiting Charlotte Hornets 125-119 and extended their winning streak to four. Read more
