Woman shot by police lover still hospitalised after four surgeries – Sister (Punch)

Despite undergoing four different surgeries at the Critical Care Unit of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Joy Eze, who was shot in the mouth by her police boyfriend, Eze Aiwansone, is still bedridden at the hospital.

Her sister, Peculiar Eze, who stated this in a chat with PUNCH Metro on Tuesday, said Joy was in excruciating pain.

She explained that the 37-year-old was being fed with a syringe, adding that whenever she felt the urge to pee, she used a pipe.

While demanding justice, Peculiar said when the victim learnt that her fleeing boyfriend, Eze, had been arrested by the police, she expressed her happiness through tears. Read more

Court remands 3 men over alleged rioting, robbery, arson in Lagos (Guardian)

An Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court, on Tuesday, remanded three men, who allegedly participated in rioting and set ablaze Lekki Toll Gate and Ajah Police Station, in Kirikiri Custodial Centre.

The Magistrates, Mr P. E Nwaka, who did not take the defendants’ plea, said they should be in the Custodial Centre pending the release of Director of Public Prosecution’s advice.

Nwaka then adjourned the case until Dec. 3 for mention.

The defendants: Destiny Paul, 20; Tope Abe, 17 and Joseph Elumelu, 26; are facing trial on armed robbery, arson and rioting.

Mrs Olayemi Sofolu, Principal State Counsel from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) office, told the court that the offences were committed on Oct. 23 at Lekki during the #ENDSARS protest. Read more

FG clamps down on #EndSARS promoters, freezes accounts (Punch)

There were strong indications on Tuesday that the Federal Government had begun a clampdown on promoters of #EndSARS protests by freezing their bank accounts.

Some #EndSARS promoters, who spoke separately to The PUNCH,  said their banks informed them that the Central Bank of Nigeria had directed that their accounts should be frozen.

Last months, youths calling for the disbanding of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigeria Police protested for two weeks in major cities of the country.

On Tuesday, some promoters of the protests said their accounts had been frozen for the past two weeks. Read more

Nigerians have taken to social media to reiterate their opposition to a bill proposing to regulate the use of social media in Nigeria.

There have been recent calls for the regulation of social media, with the government blaming the use of social media for the spread of fake news and inciteful comments during the #EndSARS protests.

The bill titled “Protection from Internet Falsehood and Manipulations Bill 2019” was sponsored by Senator Mohammed Sani Musa on the 5th of November, 2019. Read more

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, and the Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, have called on the authorities to ensure good governance in the polity.

The first class monarchs, who jointly chaired an emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) parley of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria (NCYRN) in Abuja, argued that “the measure is required to assuage the feelings of restive youths in the country.”

Enjoining public office holders to initiate good programme that would impact positively on Nigerians, the Ooni frowned on the practice of remembering Nigerians at the grassroots during electioneering, which frustration, he believed, was mainly responsible for recent #EndSARS protests. Read more

Don advises health workers to emulate late Adadevoh (Punch)

A professor of Disciplinary Public Health and Community Medicine, Michael Asuzu, has urged health workers to emulate the late Dr Stella Adadevoh, who was credited for preventing the spread of Ebola Virus Disease in Nigeria in 2014.

Asuzu, at a webinar organised by the Foundation for Cultural Heritage, advocated a genuine orientation of medical and health professional education to public and community health.

The theme of the webinar was titled, ‘Doing what needs to be done: The only worthy memorial to Dr. Stella Adedavoh.’

Delta Govt approves development of Lander Brothers Anchorage (Vanguard)

The Delta State Executive Council, on Tuesday approved the development and management of the Lander Brothers Anchorage in Asaba.

This was part of resolutions reached at the State Executive Council meeting presided over by the state governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa.

In a post Exco briefing, the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu said that the upgrade of the facilities at the Anchorage will cost N524m. Read more

Group cautions against use of pesticides as preservatives (Guardian)

The League Against Pesticide Consumption (LAPC), a concerned group campaigning against the consumption of pesticides in Nigeria, has condemned the use of dichlorovinyl dimethyl phosphate, commonly abbreviated as DDVP and referred to as pesticides for the preservation of raw foodstuff and other edibles by traders and aggregators, emphasising that the practice is harmful and injurious to the health of citizens.

The group’s statement, released in Lagos yesterday, came just as Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) warned the public against the use of Dichlorvos (DDVP) in the preservation of raw food items. Read more

New Jersey votes ‘yes’ on legalizing marijuana (NYPost)

Voters in the Garden State on Tuesday approved a ballot measure to legalize recreational marijuana —  which is expected to bring in $210 million in state taxes.

With more than 50 percent of precincts reporting, roughly two-thirds of voters — 67.9 percent to 32.1 percent — green-lit a referendum to amend the Constitution to legalize the recreational use of pot for people 21 and older.

An Australian man says he was able to survive a late-night house fire after his pet parrot roused him from bed.

Anton Nguyen had been fast asleep when his two-storey house caught alight in Brisbane, Queensland, on Wednesday.

“I heard a bang and Eric – my parrot – he started to yell so I woke up and I smelled a bit of smoke,” he told ABC.

“I grabbed Eric, opened the door and looked to the back of the house and saw some flames… and so I took off and bolted downstairs.”

Argentina legend Diego Maradona is set to undergo emergency surgery on a subdural hematoma on Tuesday evening in Buenos Aires. The operation is to deal with a blood clot after blood collection between the skull and the brain’s surface.
