Woman sits on a road surrounded by crabs

A woman has captured herself casually sitting in the middle of a road as millions of crabs start their annual march to the Christmas Island shoreline.

In the shot, photographer Kirsty Faulkner, 40, is surrounded by a swarm of red crabs, sidling along to the Indian Ocean.

The mass migration of 45 million red crustaceans begins at the start of the wet season in October or November each year.

Adult crabs leave their burrows in the jungle on the Australian island and hurry to the beach for a dip in the ocean to replenish body salts.

While mum-of-three Kirsty is always prepared for this ‘exciting’ time of year, the crab march came as a surprise to all islanders this year after an unusually long dry season. Read more
