Xherdan Shaqiri speaks out on Jurgen Klopp confrontation

Xherdan Shaqiri has played down his confrontation with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp after the Carabao Cup defeat to Chelsea.

Klopp stormed onto the pitch after Wednesday’s 2-1 loss – which was settled by Eden Hazard’s superb late goal – and berated summer signing Shaqiri.

Shaqiri earned his second start for Liverpool against Chelsea, having made his full debut last weekend in the victory over Southampton.

Klopp said after the match that he confronted former Stoke City star Shaqiri over a wasted free-kick.

And Shaqiri, 26, has now given his side to the story, telling the Evening Standard: ‘[Klopp] was not intense or shouting something.

‘It was just a tactical thing, like something off the free-kick we should do better.

‘In the end, Jordan took the free-kick and it was maybe not the best solution we did there.’

Liverpool have made a fine start to the 2018-19 season and looked to be heading for another victory against Chelsea after Daniel Sturridge fired the home side in front. Read more
