Youths attack LASTMA, Police operatives over death of Lagos motorist (Nation)

Angry youths on Tuesday attacked officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and their police escort for causing the death of an about-to-wed motorist.

The incident which occurred at the Super area of Abule Egba, caused panic among residents and road users.

The enforcement team attracted the wrath of the youths after another vehicle escaping their clutches, knocked and killed the unnamed driver of a Toyota Corolla car whose wedding, they said was to be held on Saturday. Read more

The Nigerian Army Headquarters on Tuesday paid a condolence visit to the hometown of the late Chief of Army Staff(COAS), Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja. 

The delegate, which consisted of seven Generals, was led by Kamar Ishola Yusuf. 

They visited Osun Governor, Ademola Adeeke after which they proceeded to Ilobu, hometown of the late COAS, the headquarters of Irepodun local government area of Osun to visit the king, Oba Ashiru Olaniyan and the compound of the Lagbaja. Read more

Woman bags 5 years imprisonment for attempted murder in Delta (Tribune)

The High Court of Justice in Delta State, presided over by Hon. Justice Diai Christopher Dumebi, has convicted and sentenced one Ifeoma Nlemuba to five years’ imprisonment for attempted murder.

The defendant, Ifeoma Nlemuba, was arraigned before High Court 6 in the Asaba Judicial Division on a one-count charge of attempted murder, to which she initially pleaded not guilty.

On July 23, 2024, the defense counsel submitted a plea bargain application letter to the Honourable Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, seeking to enter into plea bargain negotiations with the prosecution in accordance with Guideline 15(1)(2) of the Plea Bargain Guidelines for Prosecution in Delta State 2024, which was approved by the Honourable Attorney-General. The Akada Children’s Book Festival (ACBF), Nigeria’s first and largest book festival dedicated exclusively to children, has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting literacy, showcasing works of indigenous authors, and encouraging widespread engagement with children’s literature.

The sixth edition, themed ‘Read Your Way’, held recently at the UPBEAT Centre, Lekki, welcomed over 1,157 attendees, highlighting its pivotal role in nurturing young minds and reinforcing the importance of literacy and cultural heritage in Nigeria.

This year’s festival showcased 29 original children’s books created by Nigerian authors both locally and internationally. ALSCON: BFIG, Chinese firm sign pact to revive 135MMscfd gas processing plant (Leadership)

The BFI Group, the core investor in Aluminum Smelter Company of Nigeria (ALSCON) and Chinese firm, China National Chemical Engineering Corporation (CNCEC) have signed a significant agreement to resuscitate the 135MMscfd Gas Processing plant in ALSCON Plant Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom State, with a total estimate investment of about US$1.2 billion.

The landmark pact, signed in the boardroom of the minister of State Petroleum Resources (Gas), in Abuja on Monday marks a crucial milestone in ALSCON’s rehabilitation, recommissioning, and expansion.

Dormant for nearly three decades, ALSCON is poised to regain its position as a major aluminium producer for domestic and international markets, with a capacity to produce three hundred thousand (300,000) metric tonnes of aluminium per annum. Read more

British author Samantha Harvey has won the 2024 Booker Prize award with her novel Orbital, the first book set in space to win the prize.

A man in China is accused of killing 35 people and injuring dozens after driving his car into a group of people exercising at a sports complex this week. 

The 62-year-old man allegedly rammed his car into the facility on Monday, Nov. 11, in Zhuhai, a city in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong, per local authorities, the BBC, the New York Times and AP reported.

Curzon cinema chain snapped up by US owners of Majestic Wine (Standard)

The Curzon cinema chain, best known for its flagship picture houses in Mayfair and Soho, has been snapped up by the US investment group that owns Majestic Wine and Poundstretcher.

Fortress Investment Group acquired Curzon’s 16 locations, with 46 screens in total, its film distribution company Curzon Films and online streaming service Curzon Home Cinema, preserving a total of more than 350 jobs.

The acquisition price has not been disclosed but the company has made heavy losses in recent years. Read more

New Zealand complained about a drone flying over practices before the start of the Olympic tournament, prompting FIFA to fine Canada Soccer $228,000 and strip six standings points from the team.
