Lagos pepper seller dies in police custody (Punch)
The family members of a Lagos trader, Mrs. Basirat Akinmushire, have demanded an investigation into her death while in the custody of the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team, Lagos.
They said the 54-year-old, who was arrested at a market on Isolo Housing Estate, Isolo, was hale and hearty until the police called to inform them that she had died.
Our correspondent learnt that a rights group, Network for Police Reforms in Nigeria, had written the Police Service Commission on behalf of the family, alleging that the suspect was extra-judicially murdered. Read more
Peacemaker allegedly stabs boxer in self-defence (Punch)
A Lagos-based electrician, Saheed Odusote, who claimed to have acted in self-defence, has been arrested for allegedly stabbing a boxer, Olumide Agbolade, with a bottle.
Punch Metro learnt that Agbolade and his colleague, Taiwo Makanjuola, had a heated argument on September 7, around 9pm, which led to a fight.
It was gathered that Odusote intervened in the fight by breaking a bottle and stabbing Agbolade in the left side of his face. Read more
Security guards rob boss for delaying salaries – Police (Punch)
Two security guards, Kingsley Asuquo, 19, and Isaac Edet, 18, who were arrested by the police in Lagos for allegedly robbing a lawyer, Prof Joseph Mbadugha, allegedly said they committed the offence over delay in their salaries.
PUNCH Metro learnt that Mbadugha, who hired the guards from Strongcity Security Services, was allegedly attacked while working at his office on Johnvic Igbanogo Street, in the Lekki Phase 1 area of Lagos State.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Chike Oti, in a statement on Monday, said the command mobilised operatives to rescue Mbadugha and arrest the suspects. Read more
Man arraigned for importing 1,570 pump-action guns (Punch)
The Nigeria Customs Service on Tuesday arraigned one Ayogu James for allegedly shipping into the country 1,570 pump-action rifles from Istanbul, Turkey.
The customs told the Federal High Court in Lagos that the accused shipped the firearms into the country through the Apapa Seaport, Lagos, using two 20-foot containers marked, GESU 2555208 and CMAU 1878178.
James was alleged to have claimed that the containers were loaded with washbasins and water closets, adding that the consignment came in from China, rather than Turkey. Read more
I only slapped my wife before she was found dead, says Shonde (Guardian)
Lekan Shonde, husband of the deceased banker, Ronke Shonde, has told a Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja that he did not kill his wife but only slapped her a day before her body was found. Shonde, a dockworker told the court in his ongoing trial before Justice Josephine Oyefeso Wednesday that his wife fell as a result of the slap and hit her head on the floor in the sitting room.
Ronke’s lifeless body was discovered in their apartment on May 6, 2016 and Shonde was charged for alleged murder. He was arraigned on October 24, 2017 by the Lagos State government. The prosecution alleged that Shonde committed the offence at 8:30p.m. on May 5, 2016 at his residence in Tiemo Street, Egbeda, Lagos.
However, Shonde in his defense led by his counsel, Chief Robert Clarke (SAN), said his wife whom he was referring to as “Adunni” was sleeping on the couch in the sitting room with her phone while he was leaving home on that day of the incident. He told the court that he heard his wife speaking to one Kayode on the phone a day to her death, telling him how sweet he made love to her. Read more
Man escapes assassination plan by former worker, two others (Punch)
A three-man gang has been arrested by the police for planning to rob and assassinate one Ayodele Oludare.
The trio – 18-year-old Chimobi Ekeocha, 19-year-old Israel Ayeni, 20-year-old Paul Israel – reportedly planned to make an attempt on Oludare’s life at his residence on Peace Estate, Baruwa, Ipaja, Lagos State.
PUNCH Metro gathered that one of the suspects, Ekeocha, had been in the employ of Oludare, who had a sachet water factory, until his employment was terminated. Read more
Man allegedly converts residential apartment to a cinema (Punch)
A 34-year-old theatre arts practitioner, Korede Eyitope, was on Tuesday in Lagos brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly converting a rented residential apartment to a cinema.
According to the Prosecutor, Sgt. Godwin Awase, the accused committed the offence on April 16 at Meiran, Lagos.
He said that the accused conducted himself in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by turning the house of Mr. Olaide Ajide to a movie theatre. Read more
