Marsha Hunt, a star of MGM and Paramount beginning in the 1930s who was blacklisted in Hollywood in the ’50s during Sen. Eugene McCarthy’s Communist witch hunt, died Wednesday at age 104.

Roger Memos, who directed a documentary about Hunt’s life, confirmed the news to The Hollywood Reporter.

A former model, Hunt was a standout in such films as John Wayne’s 1937 Western “Born to the West,” 1939’s “The Glamour Girls,” opposite Lana Turner; 1940’s “Pride and Prejudice” and 1948’s beloved noir “Raw Deal.” In 1945, she joined the board of the Screen Actors Guild.

In 1950, the right-wing publication Red Channels named her as a potential Communist and she was asked to denounce her activities if she wanted to be hired for future roles — which she refused to do. Taylor Swift’s TIFF appearance for All Too Well event attracts hordes of fans (Globe&Mail)

Taylor Swift fans knew all too well that snagging tickets to see her at TIFF was a longshot. Yet that didn’t stop the hordes of Swifties (the official fan moniker) from lining up for hours under the scorching sun in hopes of scoring an even hotter last-minute seat.

The In Conversation With… Taylor Swift’s event was first announced on Sept. 2, just days before the festival kicked off. A conversation with Swift and TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey about the film and bringing the music to life followed.

The mania to witness the conversation began at midnight when the first fans parked their lawn chairs on the pavement outside of the Bell TIFF Lightbox. The crowd swelled as the day wore on, with placard- and letter-carrying fans lining King St. West to catch a glimpse of the 32-year-old.

Online was just as chaotic, where any remaining tickets snatched up to $5,000 each. When the Globe checked StubHub midday Friday, the last remaining ticket was listed for $1,898. Minutes later it was gone. Read more

Emeli Sande wanted to sing like Whitney Houston on her new album (MusicNews)

Emeli Sande wanted to sing like Whitney Houston on her latest album.

The 35-year old pop star had just met her now-girlfriend classical musician Yoana Karemova when she started laying down tracks for ‘Let’s Say For Instance’ and admitted that she wanted to sound in the style the late powerhouse – who died in 2012 at the age of 48 following a drugs overdose – because of how much she was “falling in love” at the time.

She said: “You can get a lot off your chest [when recording]. I was falling in love at that point. It was in the summer of 2021 and we’d just been allowed to go out so that’s when we had the studio session. I got into the studio session and I was like ‘I wanna do Whitney, like I wanna really sing on this one’ because I’d been listening to a lot of her. And I was in love and when you’re in love, it just all flows out and you just want to send love letters to someone. It goes from this little private thing into this big song so I loved it”.

The ‘Read All About It’ hitmaker – who was previously married to lecturer Adam Gouraguine – then admitted that she prefers to wait until a record is finished until she sings new music for her, but did reveal that ‘Ready For Love’ is her girlfriend’s new favourite from the album. Read more

European powers express ‘doubts’ over Iran’s commitment to nuclear deal (France24)

France, Britain and Germany on Saturday vented their frustration at Iran’s demand in talks to revive its 2015 nuclear deal that the U.N. nuclear watchdog closed a probe into uranium particles found at three sites, adding that it was jeopardising the talks.

Iran earlier this month sent its latest response to the European Union’s proposed text to revive the agreement under which Tehran had restrained its nuclear programme in exchange for relief from U.S., EU and U.N. economic sanctions.

Diplomats have said Iran’s response to the EU coordinator was a step backwards, with it seeking to link a revival of the deal with the closure of investigations by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) into the uranium traces.

“This latest demand raises serious doubts as to Iran’s intentions and commitment to a successful outcome on the JCPoA,” the three countries, known as the E3, said in a statement, referring to the deal’s full name, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. Read more

Edin Dzeko and Miralem Pjanic furious as Bosnia arrange absurd friendly with Russia (Mirror)

Edin Dzeko and Miralem Pjanic have been left outraged over the decision from the Football Association of Bosnia and Herzegovina to play against Russia in a friendly one day before the Qatar World Cup kicks off.

The contest is scheduled to take place in St Petersburg on November 19. Neither of the two nations will participate in the World Cup as Bosnia failed to qualify and Russia were banned from participating following the country’s invasion of Ukraine earlier this year.

Former Manchester City striker Dzeko made his feelings on the fixture crystal clear while speaking to Bosnian outlet Klix. “I am against the playing of this match! I am always and only for peace,” the Inter Milan star explained.

“The association knows my opinion! Unfortunately, I am not the one who makes the decisions with whom Bosnia and Herzegovina will play, but I have my position which is clear and which does not include playing this match, while innocent people are suffering. I stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine in these difficult times for them.” Read more

Deontay Wilder open to Anthony Joshua fight, manager Shelly Finkel says (BoxingScene)

9 drivers hit with grid penalties ahead of Italian Grand Prix (ESPN)

Haas’ Kevin Magnussen and Mick Schumacher have joined the list of drivers with a grid penalty at the Italian Grand Prix, which now stands at nine.

Magnussen and Schumacher will both drop 15 places from wherever they qualify after Haas made changes to the engine components in both cars.

Formula One’s complicated and unpopular engine rules limit drivers to a certain amount of each engine component across a season before they are penalised.

The nature of Monza’s circuit — which features long straights and a handful of corners — makes grid penalties easier to swallow, as there are better overtaking opportunities than at many of the remaining races on the grid. Read more
