A centenarian has survived the COVID-19 disease after spending 12 days on admission at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife, Osun State.
The 101-year-old resident of Ilesha, it was learnt, had shown symptoms of the disease for eight days before she was presented for treatment.
A statement by the Chief Medical Director, OAUTH, Prof. Victor Adetiloye on Thursday, explained that the woman was initially taken to a private hospital in Ile-Ife with acute cough, breathlessness, fever and malaise.
Adetiloye said the team that managed the patient encountered challenges, including advanced age, frailty, poor sleep, loss of appetite as well as frequent desaturation.
The team, however, successfully managed the case within 12 days of admission and the patient had since been discharged.Giving insight into how the patient was managed, the CMD said symptoms of the disease had started manifesting in her eight days before she was presented for treatment, a development that worsened her clinical conditions and “this warranted a screening test for SARS CoV2.” (Punch)
