2 bodies recovered, 4 rescued in Lagos boat mishap (Channels)
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service said it recovered two bodies of victims on board a capsized boat crossing from Olorunsogo to Isawo on Friday.
The rescue service in a statement signed by its Deputy Affairs Public Affairs, Ololade Agoola, on Friday, said the bodies recovered were of two females identified as Misturat Okunbanjo, 18, and Azeezat Amoo, 16.
It also said that it rescued four other victims of the boat mishap alive. Read more

There appears to be a crack at the Supreme Court, barely 24 hours after it validated the election of President Bola Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
A retiring justice of the court, Musa Dattijo Muhammad, who reportedly pulled out from the seven-man panel that dismissed all the appeals that sought to remove President Tinubu from office, has accused the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, of abusing the powers of his office.
Justice Muhammad, who spent 47 years in active judicial service, bowed out of the apex court bench on Friday, having clocked the 70 years mandatory retirement age. Read more
Gunshot victims should be treated without police report — IGP (Tribune)
Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun has ordered the compulsory treatment of gunshot victims without police report nationwide.
This directive was contained in an internal memo signed by the Principal Staff Officer, to the IGP, Olatunji Disu, a Commissioner of Police on Wednesday.
The Memo dated October 25th 2023 stated that the directive, was ” in line with the Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of Gunshot Act 2017. Read more
Church gives succour to widows, others in Lagos (Guardian)
The Givers Embassy Church reiterated its commitment towards alleviating the burdens of widows, the poor, the unemployed and the vulnerable persons in the society.
To fulfill this obligation, the church recently organised an outreach where it put smiles on the faces of no fewer than 27 widows and other church members in Lagos.
The church, at the event, donated foodstuffs, including bags of rice, spaghetti, and other palliatives to them. It also provided interest-free loans and set up an Employment Academy to train and empower the women who had lost their husbands. Read more
Tinubu appoints Olaopa, 11 others into Federal Civil Service Commission (Nation)
President Bola Tinubu has appointed one-time Federal Permanent Secretary, Professor Tunji Olaopa, as the Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC), along with eleven other members.
According to a statement issued by Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, the appointment of the new FCSC Chairman and members is subject to Senate’s confirmation.
The statement explained that the appointment was in exercise of President Tinubu’s powers as prescribed by the constitutional provision, which instructs him to appoint chairmen and members for fourteen federal executive bodies. Read more
Sylva suffers setback in bid to vacate order banning him from Bayelsa governorship election (DailyTrust)
The Court of Appeal in Abuja has refused the motions by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Timipre Sylva seeking to stay execution of the judgment nullifying their candidature in the November 11 Bayelsa State governorship election.
Sylva filed the appeal and stay of execution following the judgement of a Federal High Court in Abuja which barred him from contesting as the APC candidate because he has served twice as governor.
In a unanimous judgment of a three-member panel of justices, Justice William Daudu, struck out the motions for lacking in merit. Read more
NMA backs IG’s directive on treating gunshot victims (Punch)
The Nigerian Medical Association said it would adhere to the directive of the acting Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, to treat gunshot victims without asking for a police report.
The NMA said prior to the directive, medical doctors in the country had always attended to emergency cases without demanding a police report.
Egbetokun had issued the directive while urging health workers to sensitise Nigerians about the issue. Read more

Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, and the leader of the Diasporan delegation to motherland Africa, Dr. Julius Garvey, have both agreed to have Badagry in Lagos State, as location for the world Africa Slave Trade Museum.
This followed a meeting held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, Ogun State, during a courtesy visit on the former President and renowned African statesman.
In a statement by Obasanjo‘s Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, the duo noted that the enormous contributions of the ancient town in Badagry to the history of slave trade could not be overemphasised, hence the resolution to have it as the location of the world museum centre. Read more

Ghana plunged into darkness amid country’s economic woes (CNN)
Large swaths of Ghana are facing power blackouts due to gas shortages at a major power facility, the nation’s power operator said, compounding the country’s worst economic crisis in decades.
“Limited gas supply” at a power installation in Tema, located east of the Ghanian capital, Accra, has led to “a supply gap of 550MW at peak time,” the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) said of the power outages in a statement Thursday evening.
Ghana partly relies on natural gas for power generation. The West African nation has battled power outages, known locally as “dumsor” for many years. Read more
The Who’s “Tommy” to return to Broadway in 2024 (FarOut)
After first premiering on New York’s live stage in 1993, the Broadway adaptation of The Who’s rock opera “Tommy” is set to return in 2024.
The production is based on the pioneering LP that Pete Townshend wrote for “The Who”, released in 1969. It’s returning to Broadway with the director of the original show, Des McAnuff. When talking about the outlook of the latest adaptation, McAnuff claimed the world is catching up with the story of the original record, stating: “The Who’s Tommy for a new generation who, possibly more than any other, has a broad appetite for all kinds of music and storytelling.”
Meanwhile, Townshend said: “In 1969, when I originally wrote Tommy with The Who, nobody had ever written popular music songs about trauma, nobody talked about bullying, domestic sexual abuse was a subject that was virtually censored. Then, in 1993, working with Des on the staged theatre piece, we broke the established rules for a musical show.” Read more
US and China reach agreement for talks between presidents (IrishExaminer)
President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping have agreed to meet on the sidelines of next month’s Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) summit in San Francisco, according to a US official.
The two sides worked out an agreement in principle for the meeting during the summit as Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi met with secretary of state Antony Blinken and White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan on Friday, the official told the Associated Press.
The official said the two sides have not worked out details on the exact day of the meeting, venue and other logistics. Read more

Nate Dogg‘s ex-girlfriend, Shereda Williams, has petitioned the Los Angeles Superior Court to intercede on her behalf so she can get child support for 17-year-old Jayden, the son she shares with the late singer.
According to court documents obtained by Radar Online, Williams showed petitions providing for $4,358 per month in child support for the child, which were signed by the late hook king (real name Nathaniel Hale) in 2006.
Two years after Nate Dogg died in 2011, however, the courts ordered that Williams’ payments be reduced to $3000/month. However, due to what Williams is calling a “mistake in the court filings,” she’s at risk of losing all of the child support, and wants the court to petition her baby daddy’s late estate to come up with the funds. The suspect in a mass shooting that killed 18 people in the US state of Maine has been found dead, US media have reported.
A manhunt for Robert Card had been underway since 18 people were killed and 13 others wounded in two shootings at a bowling alley and a restaurant in Lewiston, Maine, on Wednesday night.
Card, a sergeant at a US Army Reserve base, is believed to have died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, multiple media outlets said, citing law enforcement officials. Read more

Britney Spears is opening up about one of the most challenging performances of her career and the controversy that followed.
In her newly released memoir ‘‘The Woman in Me’’, Spears, now 41, revealed that she had a panic attack backstage at the 2007 MTV VMAs just before her performance of “Gimme More,” which was widely criticized at the time.
The superstar said that, despite experiencing a difficult year in 2007, she was encouraged to perform for the first time in three years that September in order to promote her album Blackout, which was due out the next month. “I didn’t want to, but my team was pressuring me to get out there and show the world I was fine,” she wrote. “The only problem with this plan: I was not fine.” Read more
Nigerian sprinter, Grace Nwokocha, gets 3 years ban for doping (Vanguard)
Nigerian sprinter Nzubechi Grace Nwokocha has been banned for three years for doping, the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) announced on Friday, October 27.
Nwokocha, who won gold in the 4x100m relay at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, tested positive for Ostarine and Ligandrol in a sample collected on 3 August 2022.
She has reportedly admitted to the doping violation and accepted the sanction of a three-year ban. She has also been stripped of her gold medal from the Commonwealth Games. Read more

Chelsea, Brentford and Aston Villa are interested in signing Roma centre-forward Tammy Abraham at the end of the season, according to reports.

Hamilton ultimately lost his second place after Mercedes were found after the race to have breached a technical regulation by running the car too low to the ground, but the seven-time world champion remains hugely optimistic about the impact of the updates. Read more

Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez said he could start some key players against Real Madrid on Saturday who have been out injured in recent weeks, if they arrive 100 percent fit.
The Spanish champions have been without forwards Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha, midfielders Pedri and Frenkie de Jong and defenders Jules Kounde and Sergi Roberto in the lead-up to the match.
