2 killed, 15 injured in Lagos-Ibadan Expressway accident (Punch)
Two persons lost their lives on Saturday, while 15 others sustained injuries when a speeding DAF truck overturned at a diversion point along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
Our correspondent gathered that the incident involved a vehicle loaded with bags of onions and passengers.
The vehicle was travelling towards Lagos when the incident occurred around the Eldorado axis on the expressway.
The accident which occurred around 6.30 am led to gridlock, as the truck emptied the onions and passengers on the road. Read more
Passport Office introduces Saturday, Sunday services in Ikeja (Sun)
The International Passport Office in Ikeja, Lagos, has begun operations on Saturdays and Sundays to meet rising demand by applicants.
Mrs Rose Bukar, its new Passport Control Officer, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Saturday that the extra duty was to speed-up service delivery to applicants.
“We want to ensure that applicants spend lesser time in processing passports.
“We shall also continue to initiate measures that will enhance smooth and fast service to Nigerians,” she said. Read more
12 dock workers in our custody linked to N9.5b cocaine seized at Lagos port, says NDLEA (Guardian)
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA has said that it is holding 12 dockworkers at the Apapa seaport in Lagos because of their significant links to the importation of 32.9 kilograms of cocaine worth over N9.5 billion in street value.
A Federal High Court in Lagos had granted an application by the Agency for the interim attachment of a vessel MV Chayanee Naree used to import the 32.9 kilograms of cocaine into Nigeria through the Apapa seaport. Beside the attachment order, the court also granted NDLEA’s request to detain the Master of the ship, Mr. Tanahan Krilerk and 21 foreign crew members as well as the dockworkers arrested in connection to the case.
The anti-narcotic Agency had on October 13 intercepted the ship at the Apapa seaport following intelligence from international partners and support from other security forces such as the Nigerian Navy, Customs, DSS and the police. A thorough search of the ship led to the recovery of 30 parcels containing cocaine, which weighed 32.9kg.
The application in suit no: FHC/L/CS/1518/2021, which was filed by the agency’s Director of Prosecution and Legal Services, Joseph Nbone Sunday on Thursday 28th October was granted the following day Friday 29th October by Hon. Justice A.O. Awogboro. Read more

Troops of Joint Task Force, North East ‘Operation Hadin Kai’ have neutralized several Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists during a recent encounter in Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.
This is just as a Brigadier General and Commander of the Special Forces, Brig-Gen Dzarma Zirkusu and some soldiers were killed during the fierce encounter with the troops reportedly charging against the terrorists to prevent the town from falling to ISWAP.
The terrorists were said to have arrived in the town with a massive arsenal of movable weapons and high calibre equipment with which to overrun troops but the soldiers stood their ground. Read more

An information technology expert, Cyril Isong, has been apprehended by the police for the alleged abduction of a House of Representative member.
Isong, who lived in Abuja, reportedly connived with others at large to lure the lawmaker to a short let apartment in Asokoro, Abuja, with a woman and held him hostage afterwards, dispossessing him of $2,000 and N65,000.
City Round learnt that Isong was tracked down recently in Akwa Ibom by operatives of Force Intelligence Response Team led by DCP Tunji Disu following a petition addressed to the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, by the lawmaker.
The victim was said to have alleged in the petition that on August 4, 2020, he received a call from an unknown caller who introduced himself as Sani and claimed to be a former National Assembly member.Read more
Father, security man arrested over death of son in Jigawa (Nation)
The Police in Jigawa has arrested a 40-year-old man for the death of his 18-year-old son in Birninkudu Local Government Area of the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Jigawa Police Command, ASP Lawan Shiisu, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigerian (NAN) in Dutse on Saturday.
Shiisu said the father, along with a 45-year-old member of a local security network in the area, known as ‘Yan Bulala, were arrested after the deceased died as a result of a beating he received from the security man.
Shiisu said the case was initially reported to the police by the mother of the deceased, Safiya Musa, of Kafin Gana village. Read more
4 die as gunmen attack mourners in Benue (Tribune)
No fewer than four people were murdered by gunmen in the early hours of Saturday at Adigi community in Mbayatyo Mbater council ward of Logo Local Government Area of Benue State.
Five other people were reportedly injured when gunmen invaded the community and shot at people who had gathered for the wake of an elderly woman, Mama Achin Agidi.
While some locals in the community said that the gunmen were suspected to be local militias, the council Chairman, Agber Isaac, said the attackers were suspected to be Fulani herdsmen. Read more
Katsina blames insecurity, banditry for livestock eggs scarcity (Nation)
The Katsina State Government has blamed the growing scarcity of livestock eggs in most markets and shops in the state, on the worsening security challenges and banditry attacks in most of its local government areas.
A recent The Nation investigation revealed that livestock eggs were in short supply in most of the state’s shops and supermarkets.
Livestock eggs were also not readily available on the menu during visits to most tea joints and eateries.
Special Adviser to Governor Aminu Bello Masari on Livestock, Dr Lawal Usman Bagiwa, told The Nation that scarcity of livestock eggs was not caused by a high cost of feeds, but by insecurity, lack of farmers and an inability of farmers to attain up to 70 per cent production capacity.
Police in Delta arrest notorious armed robber, recover stolen car, ammunition (Guardian)
Police in Delta have arrested a suspected armed robber in Sapele and recovered several ammunitions from him.
Police spokesman, DSP Bright Edafe, said in a statement issued in Warri, Delta, that the suspect was nabbed on Wednesday.
He stated that the 38-year-old suspect had been terrorising residents of Sapele and environs adding that he was also on the police’s watch list.

9 students killed after canoes capsize in Ghana (Guardian)
Nine junior high school students drowned on Friday after two canoes capsized on a river in the Northern Region of Ghana, the Police confirmed on Saturday.
Bernard Baba Ananga, Northern Regional Crime Officer of the Ghana Police Service, told Xinhua that about 31 students were on the canoes, which they used to cross the Oti River to a farm.

Russian President Vladimir Putin insisted Saturday that Russia has “absolutely nothing to do with” the ongoing crisis at the Poland-Belarus border, where thousands of people are stranded in desperate conditions.
The migrants — most of whom are from the Middle East and Asia, and who are hoping to travel on from Poland deeper into Europe — have been gathering on the Belarusian side of the border, where they are enduring bitter weather and a lack of food and medical attention.
Western leaders are accusing Belarus of manufacturing a migrant crisis on the EU’s eastern frontier as retribution for sanctions over human rights abuses. President Alexander Lukashenko’s government has repeatedly denied such claims, instead blaming the West for the crossings and accusing it of poor treatment of migrants.

A US businessman who blasted into space with Star Trek actor William Shatner has died in a plane crash less than a month later.
Glen de Vries, 49, was aboard a single-engine aircraft which crashed in woodland in the US state of New Jersey on Thursday.
The other person on the flight, Thomas Fischer, 54, was also killed.
Mr De Vries, who joined Mr Shatner on Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’s New Shepard spacecraft, was a tech entrepreneur.Read more

Ex-NBA player apologizes for daughter’s brutal basketball sucker punch (NYPost)
Corey Benjamin, who played three seasons with the Chicago Bulls and part of one with the Atlanta Hawks, has apologized after his daughter sucker-punched and concussed an opponent.
Video of the brutal incident at a girls basketball tournament went viral earlier this week.
“This is not how I raised my daughter,” Benjamin told NBC Los Angeles.
In the video, Benjamin’s daughter missed a shot. With her team down double-digits, she socked 15-year-old Lauryn Ham, a player on the other team.
Benjamin apologized to the teen who was struck, and said that he was “shocked and disappointed” in his daughter, who made a mistake “that she will need to make right.” Read more
