Court remands men for robbing German returnee, wife (Punch)
A Yaba Chief Magistrate Court on Tuesday ordered the remand of two men, Godwin Michael and Niyi Benjamin, for allegedly robbing a Nigerian-German returnee and his German wife at their home a few days before Christmas.
Magistrate Patrick Nwaka ordered that the duo should be remanded for the first 30 days, pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.
Michael, 51, and Benjamin, 28, were brought on a remand charge, bordering on conspiracy, armed robbery, and assault preferred against them by the police.
Guard bags life jail for raping minor (Punch)
Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court on Monday sentenced a security guard, Olawale Olarewaju, to life imprisonment for having sexual intercourse with a 12-year-old girl.
The judge also knocked the Ikoyi Custodial Centre for the lapses and delay in justice to bring the defendant, who had been in prison custody for eight years, to court.
Justice Oshodi held that the case had been struck out for want of diligent prosecution by Justice Sybil Nwaka (retd) when the custodial centre did not produce him before the court for arraignment despite the issuance of a reproduction warrant between 2016 and 2019. Read more
Lagos police arrest 3 for staging street carnival (Punch)
The Lagos State Police Command said its operatives have arrested three men for disturbing public peace in the Shasha, Akowonjo area of the state.
The men, Julius Osimirin, 43, Isiaka Kabiru, 16, and Ajewole Ajugba, 42, were arrested for disregarding existing laws regulating the use of speakers in public in the state.

Police arrest man for assaulting officer in Lagos (Punch)
Men of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested and arraigned a 39-year-old man, Akinyemi Akintayo, for assaulting police officers in December.
This was made known in a statement by the Lagos state Public Relations officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin on his X account on Monday.
He said, “After weeks on the run, Akinyemi Akintayo aged 39yrs of Ayobo has been arrested and arraigned for his serious assault on police officers on December 8, 2023.” Read more
Police probe alleged OPC assault on lady in Lagos (Punch)
The Lagos State Police Command is probing the alleged assault on a lady, Tope Segun, by suspected members of the Oodua People’s Congress.
Tope accused the OPC members of brutalising her in Olodan, the Ijora Badia area of Lagos.
She said the incident happened at the instance of her former boyfriend, identified simply as Atari, whom she claimed invited the men to “discipline” her brother, Abdulahi, whom she said earlier had a clash with Atari. Read more
LASTMA nabs 2 suspected robbers, accomplice flees (Punch)
Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority have arrested two suspected armed robbers at the Abule-Egba area of the state on Thursday while the accomplice escaped arrest.
This was disclosed in a statement made available to PUNCH Metro by the Public Relations Officer, LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, on Thursday.
According to the statement, they were arrested in a T4 commercial bus with registration number APP 406 YE at the U-turn area of Abule-Egba in the state.
NDLEA intercepted 876 kg of cocaine in 2023 – Tincan commander (Punch)
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Tincan Island Chapter, said it intercepted 876.453 kilograms of various illicit drugs and controlled substances between January and December
2023.Announcing this in a statement on Thursday, the Area Commander of the NDLEA, Tincan Island Command, Mohammed Abubakar, said a total of 15 individuals were arrested and prosecuted within the period under review out of which 10 individuals were convicted.
Abubakar said that other intercepted illicit drugs included, “Cocaine, 24kg; cannabis, 852.45KG; tramadol, 0.003KG. The total volume was 876.453KG. There were other psychotropic substances some of which were concealed in the imported vehicle,” he said. Read more
Court remands applicant for allegedly defiling 9-month-old baby (Nation)
Justice Rahman Oshodi of an Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court yesterday remanded a 28-year-old applicant, Agboola Adebayo, at a correctional centre for allegedly defiling a nine-month-old baby.
Adebayo, of no fixed address, was arraigned on a two-count charge of defilement and causing grievous harm to the baby.
State counsel, Ms Bukola Okeowo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on March 23, 2023 at White Sand area of Ijora Badiya, Lagos. Read more
Army arrest soldier criticising Sanwo-Olu in viral video (Guardian)
The Chief of Army Staff, Taoreed Lagbaja, said a soldier who criticised Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in a viral video has been arrested.
Lagbaja stated that the conduct of the soldier caught driving against traffic does not represent the entire Nigerian Army.
He disclosed that many viral videos showing soldiers criticizing Sanwo-Olu were fake.
According to the Army Chief, only one authentic video was investigated, and the unidentified soldier involved had been arrested. Read more
