2 rescued as boat capsizes in Lagos (Vanguard)
Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service on Friday, rescued two men from drowning after their boat capsized on the Eko Atlantic Ocean by the Eko Hotel and Suites section, Victoria Island.
The incident, it was gathered occurred at 09:12 am on Friday.
Director, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, said the agency deployed the Oba Oniru Fire Station of the Lagos State Fire to rescue the victims. Read more

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo state has narrated how he found out that his deputy, Philip Shaibu, was “working against him”.
According to Obaseki, Shaibu has become so desperate to succeed him, ahead of the Edo governorship election in 2024.

Benue women protesting herdsmen attacks block Makurdi-Abuja highway (Tribune)
Some women in the early hours of Friday blocked the Makurdi/Laafia/Abuja federal highway following the killing of five people by suspected herders in Benue State.
Sources in the area informed our correspondent that the women thronged the federal highway as early as 5 am to protest the killing of five people.
A source who simply identified himself as Adamgbe told our correspondent that five people were killed in separate attacks at Ngban and Nyian — two communities in Guma Local Government Area of the state — by suspected herdsmen. Read more

Tension as several policemen attached to the Iponri Divisional Police Station have reportedly been attacked by hoodlums suspected to be motorcycle riders in the Ijora Olopa area of Lagos State.
New Telegraph learnt that the policemen went to the area to implement the restriction order on Okada riders by the Lagos State government when they were attacked.
A source in the area who spoke with our correspondent on the phone said the incident happened around 10 am when the policemen came to the area to impound some okada riders who flouted the restriction order by the State government when they were attacked by the hoodlums. Read more

Nigerian Navy adopts AI to enhance operational effectiveness – CNS (Guardian)
The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Adm. Emmanuel Ogalla, says the Nigerian Navy will leverage on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies to enhance its operational activities.
Ogalla said this during the presentation of a paper by navy participants of National Defence College (NDC) Course 31, entitled “Artificial Intelligence and Ship Maintenance: Strategic Options for the Nigerian Navy by 2035”.
The CNS said that the use of AI was significantly transforming the maritime industry, adding that the Nigerian navy was embracing it to improve the availability of ships towards enhancing operational effectiveness. Read more

Zuma escapes further jail time due to overcrowding (BBC)
South Africa’s former President Jacob Zuma has been spared from returning to prison, with officials saying this is to ease overcrowding.
Zuma, who was sentenced to 15 months for contempt of court, surrendered himself to the authorities on Friday.
The 81-year-old had previously been freed on medical parole – in a move ruled illegal by the courts. Justice Minister Ronald Lamola said he had been given remission to address overcrowding in prisons. Read more

Mick Fleetwood has confirmed that his restaurant has been destroyed by the devastating Maui wildfires.
The former Fleetwood Mac star’s Hawaii restaurant, Fleetwood’s on Front Street in the historic town of Lahaina, “has been lost” in the disaster, which has seen almost 60 people dead and 1,700 buildings burnt down.
More than 14,000 people have been evacuated from Maui as of Wednesday. “Maui and the Lahaina community have been my home for several decades,” Fleetwood wrote on Twitter. Read more

Duran Duran’s Andy Taylor has said a new treatment for his stage four prostate cancer has “effectively” extended his life “for five years”.

Asylum-seekers have been removed from a controversial barge in southern England after Legionella bacteria was discovered in the water – days after experts warned of the risk of infection.
Thirty-nine asylum-seekers disembarked the Bibby Stockholm barge, a UK Home Office spokesperson said in a statement Friday – just days after they were first housed in it.
Legionella bacteria, which is commonly found in water, and can cause Legionnaires’ disease, a serious lung infection. The spokesperson said that no individuals on board the barge showed symptoms of Legionnaires’ and that the asylum-seekers were being provided with appropriate advice and support. Read more
