Pressure mounts on coalitions to close ranks (Leadership)

As political realignments continue ahead of the 2027 general election, there is pressure on the opposition coalition movement to address grey areas around their personal ambitions and the platform with which to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s second term ambition.

A former presidential candidate, Chief Martin Onovo, underscored this reality when he warned that it would be difficult for any single opposition party to defeat President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

He, however, noted that only a strong alliance of opposition parties can defeat President Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress (APC) government in 2027. Read more

US military adjusts Africa strategy (DW)

Africa should take greater ownership of its own security challenges. That was the message recently communicated by Gen. Michael Langley, head of US Africa Command (USAFRICOM). The unit is part of the US Department of Defense and is responsible for all Department of Defense operations and security cooperation on the African continent.

The announcement comes as the United States rethinks its military strategy in Africa, signaling a significant shift in its approach to security on the continent.

This adjustment aligns with a broader strategic pivot under the Trump administration, which is prioritizing homeland security and a leaner, more lethal military force, while reducing the US military footprint overseas, including in Africa. Read more

Trump sends Marines, more National Guard members to Los Angeles (AlJazeera)

An additional 2,000 National Guard soldiers, along with 700 Marines, have headed to Los Angeles on orders from United States President Donald Trump, escalating a military presence local officials and California Governor Gavin Newsom do not want, and which the city’s police chief says creates logistical challenges for safely handling protests.

An initial deployment of 2,000 National Guard personnel ordered by Trump started arriving on Sunday, as violence erupted during protests driven by an accelerated enforcement of immigration laws that critics say are breaking apart families.

Monday’s demonstrations were less raucous. Thousands peacefully attended a rally at City Hall, hundreds protested outside a federal complex that includes a detention centre where some immigrants are being held following workplace raids across the city. Read more

Ultrarunner Will Goodge endured hallucinations and sleepless nights during 2,387-mile run across Australia in 35 days (CNN)

The first nine days, Will Goodge says, felt like a “revolving nightmare,” an unending cycle of running and eating, running and eating until it was eventually time to sleep.

Except when he did try to close his eyes, sleep would rarely feel restorative, only feverish and restless. Hallucinations became an unpleasant and regular occurrence – “kind of like you’re dreaming but awake at the same time,” says Goodge – and a deep, aching sensation had settled into his muscles and bones.

At this point, the British influencer and endurance athlete had barely scratched the surface of his record-breaking attempt to run across Australia. Thousands of miles of tarmac still lay in front of him, and the torment felt like it would last forever. Read more
