Ondo State Speaker, Deputy impeached (Punch)
Speaker, Ondo State House of Assembly, Mr. Bamidele Oloyelogun; and his Deputy, Mr. Iroju Ogundeji, have been impeached. Both leaders were impeached on Friday on allegations of “gross misconduct.” Iroju Ogundeji was impeached earlier this year, but he was later reinstated. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has received a fresh batch of 120 stranded Nigerians from Libya. The returnees who arrived at the MMIA Cargo Wing at about 9:15 pm on Thursday, via AL Buraq Air, were brought back with the help of the International Organisation for Migration. Former First Lady Michelle Obama has released a memoir in which she reveals difficulties about her marriage and pregnancy with her two daughters. In the book, Becoming, Mrs Obama reveals that she had a miscarriage and used in vitro fertilisation to conceive both children, Malia and Sasha. Razor-thin margins in the Senate and governor’s races in Florida are raising the possibility of recounts in two of the most closely watched contests of the US midterm elections. In the governor’s race, the campaign of the Democratic candidate, Andrew Gillum, said it was preparing for a possible recount. He conceded to his Republican rival, Ron DeSantis, on Tuesday, although the race has since tightened. As of Thursday afternoon, DeSantis led Gillum by 0.47 of a percentage point. Read more
Active shooter reported at North Carolina High School (Time)
Sheriff’s deputies in North Carolina are responding to reports of an active shooter at Topsail High School about 20 miles north of Wilmington. Pender County Schools confirmed the reports of the shooter and said the district is “taking all precautions to ensure the safety of students and staff. Samsung folding smartphone revealed to developers (BBC)
Samsung has unveiled a folding handset at an event in San Francisco. It described its Infinity Flex Display as “the foundation of the smartphone of tomorrow” and said it intended to start production within months. When unfolded, the device resembles a 7.3in (18.5cm) tablet. When closed, a separate smaller “cover display” on the handset’s other side comes into use. Read more
Harassment victims at Google gain more power (BBC)
Google employees will now be able to more freely speak out over issues of sexual harassment at the firm. Responding to demands from the around 20,000 workers who protested last week, the company has said it will end the practice of “forced arbitration” in cases of sexual harassment. Man drowns inside swimming pool in Ondo hotel (DailyPost)
A middle-aged man has reportedly died in a swimming pool in Akure, the Ondo State capital. According to a source who preferred anonymity, the deceased, whose identity is yet to be known, was a lodger at Helena hotel, Ijapo, the state capital. Man who sent death threats to ministers gets jailed (Punch)
A Swedish court on Friday jailed a 43-year-old man for seven years for sending death threats and an unidentified white powder to 21 cabinet ministers, including the prime minister. The man, identified in court documents as Michael Salonen, was also found guilty of attempted murder for sending a letter bomb to a bitcoin selling company called Cryptopay in London last year. The bomb did not explode and no one was injured. Read more
