235 vehicles impounded as LASTMA begins zero-tolerance campaign (Guardian)

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has launched an enforcement campaign targeting critical traffic corridors in Lagos, aimed at restoring order and improving vehicular movement across the metropolis.

The operation commenced yesterday, with personnel deployed to high-traffic zones, including Oyingbo, Iddo, Eja-Lonibu, Adeniji Adele, Sabo, Jibowu (Inter-State Terminal), and Oshodi.

During the exercise, 235 vehicles were impounded for breaching the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018. The vehicles included 38 private cars, 156 Volkswagen commercial buses (Danfo), 19 minibuses (Korope)/tricycles, five haulage trucks, and 17 inter-state passenger buses. Violations ranged from encroachment on pedestrian pathways and obstruction of vehicular flow to operating illegal terminals and flouting other traffic regulations. Read more 

May 30th Biafra Day: CP warns against undermining national security (Leadership)

Ahead of the illegal annual Biafra Day celebration normally being enforced throughout the defunct Eastern region today, May 30th, the commissioner of police in charge of Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has warned those planning to enforce this year‘s ceremony to stop it.

He warned that his command would not condone any act that threatened national security.

In a statement issued on his behalf yesterday by the spokesman of the state police command, superintendent of police, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, CP Orutugu stated that a joint security teams made up of the personnel of the command, State Security Services (SSS), Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Immigration and supported by the Nigerian Army have been set up to patrol every part of the state to forestall any acts of criminality. 21 dead, 10 missing in deadly Niger flash flood (Channels)

A devastating flash flood has claimed 21 lives and left more than 10 persons missing in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, following a torrential downpour that struck overnight.

According to a statement issued by the Acting Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Ibrahim Hussaini, the disaster struck the communities of Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa in Mokwa town during heavy rainfall of high intensity that lasted for several hours.

Rivers: Thank Tinubu for intervention – Fubara to Nigerians (Sun)

Lassa fever, meningitis kill 366 in 24 states – NCDC (Punch)

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has reported a total of 366 deaths from Lassa fever and meningitis in the country, highlighting the continued public health challenge posed by these diseases.

From January 1 to May 18, 2025, the NCDC confirmed 733 cases of Lassa fever from 5,118 suspected infections across 18 states and 95 local government areas.

Within the same period, the country recorded 141 Lassa fever-related deaths, representing a case fatality rate of 19.2 per cent. Read more

Moscow proposed to Ukraine to meet again in Istanbul for the second round of talks next Monday. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said he presented Russia’s “specific proposals” for the next round of negotiations to Washington, but has not shared Moscow’s “peace memorandum” with Kyiv.

5 Mexican musicians abducted, murdered by alleged drug cartel (AlJazeera)

Drug cartel members are suspected of murdering five Mexican band members, who went missing after being hired to perform a concert in a crime-ridden city in the northeast of the country.

The Diario de Mexico newspaper said on Thursday that the bodies of the five musicians had been discovered after they went missing on Sunday, and nine suspects were arrested in connection with their abduction and killing.

According to authorities, the nine suspects are part of the “Los Metros” faction of the Gulf Cartel, which operates in the city of Reynosa, in Tamaulipas state, near the United States border. Read more
