28 miscreants terrorising Lagos motorists to face trial (Punch)

The Lagos State Taskforce on Tuesday said it would prosecute the 28 miscreants arrested in some parts of the state for terrorising and extorting motorists.

The agency’s Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, in a statement on Tuesday, noted that the miscreants are in the habit of extorting motorists whose vehicles break down on the highway under the guise of collecting ‘owo omotaku’, literally meaning “breakdown money.”

He said a raid on areas such as Mile 2, Alaba Rago, FESTAC, Apapa, and the surrounding environments led to the arrest of the miscreants. Read more 

Slow growth rate necessitated reforms, says Tinubu (Nation)

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said Nigeria’s slow economic growth rate prompted his administration to embark on various reforms aimed at achieving sustainable and inclusive growth.

Speaking at the 54th Annual Accountants’ Conference with the theme: ‘Governance reimagined: Mapping the future’, Tinubu emphasised Nigeria was not growing fast enough and decades of underinvestment have hindered the economy’s potential.

Speed Darlington released from police custody (Vanguard)

Darlington Okoye, also known as Speed Darlington, has been released on bail from police custody after spending five days in detention.

Deji Adeyanju, the human rights lawyer, confirmed that he was arrested in Lagos last Friday and then transferred to Abuja, where he had been detained.

The lawyer revealed that Darlington’s detention stemmed from a formal complaint filed by Burna Boy. He was accused of defaming and cyberstalking the Grammy Award winner. Read more 

Lagos appoints new Chairman for Alimosho local govt (Tribune)

The Lagos State Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development has issued a letter of appointment to the newly appointed Chairman of Alimosho Local Government, Hon. Akinpelu Johnson.

Hon. Johnson received official approval from the ministry to take over as the new council chairman through a letter signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Kikelomo Bolarinwa, dated Oct. 8.

The appointment follows the suspension of the former Chairman of the council, Jelili Sulaimon, by the Lagos State House of Assembly. Read more 

Medical practitioners hail lawmakers’ call for review of medicare price list (Punch)

The Association of Nigerian Private Medical Practitioners has commended the House of Representatives for calling for the review of the price list for medicine and Medicare under the National Health Insurance Scheme.

The association said the decision by the lower house is encouraging and will be beneficial to Nigerians if the drug pricing is reviewed.

The House of Representatives had last Thursday urged its relevant committees to interface with the Federal Ministry of Health and the National Health Insurance Authority to carry out a comprehensive review of the price list for medicine and Medicare under the health insurance scheme. Read more

Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State has issued a stern warning to newly elected local government chairpersons and their deputies, threatening them with jail time if they engage in unauthorised land allocation and distribution.

The governor made this declaration on Monday during the swearing-in ceremony for the local council officials in Dutse.

“Let me make it clear that land issues are the sole responsibility of the government. Unless the governor authorises you, stay away from land allocation and distribution, or you will go to jail,” Governor Namadi warned. Read more 

FCT primary teachers suspend strike, laud Wike’s intervention (Nation)

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has suspended its three-week strike following the intervention of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

The union announced the suspension in a communiqué issued yesterday in Abuja by its Chairman, Abdullahi Shafa; the Secretary, Mrs. Margaret Jetro, and the Publicity Secretary, Ibukun Adekeye.

Sean Diddy Combs’ attorneys have filed an appeal for him to be released from jail before his trial.

On Tuesday, Oct. 8, the mogul’s lawyer Alexander A.E. Shapiro made the filing in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, per court documents obtained by PEOPLE.

Russia on a mission to create mayhem on European streets, MI5 says (CNBC)

The head of Britain’s domestic spy agency on Tuesday accused Russian military intelligence of being on a “sustained mission” to cause mayhem in Britain and Europe.

In a rare public speech from MI5’s counter-terrorism operations center in London, MI5 Director General Ken McCallum said ongoing efforts by autocratic states to harm Britain’s security represents “the most complex threat environment we have ever seen.”

McCallum said a total of 43 late-stage attack plots had been foiled by MI5 and police since 2017, noting that some plotters were seeking to get hold of firearms and explosives “in the final days of planning mass murder.” Read more 

Afghan man, planning attack on US election day in November, arrested (IndiaToday)

An Afghan man has been arrested for allegedly plotting to carry out an attack on US election day on behalf of the Islamic State group, the Justice Department said Tuesday.

Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, 27, was arrested on Monday in the western US state of Oklahoma and has been charged with attempting to provide material support to IS.

“The Justice Department foiled the defendant’s plot to acquire semi-automatic weapons and commit a violent attack in the name of (IS) on US soil on Election Day,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement. Read more
