Security analyst questions timing, scope of Boko Haram amnesty (Guardian)

Retired Group Captain and security analyst, Sadeeq Garba Shehu, has raised concerns over Nigeriaโ€™s approach to the deradicalisation and amnesty programmes for Boko Haram fighters, questioning whether the country has met the conditions required under international law to implement such initiatives.

Speaking during an interview on Politics Today on Channels Television, Shehu explained that international frameworks, particularly the Geneva Conventions and Additional Protocol II, require clear benchmarks for granting amnesty during non-international armed conflicts. He referenced Article 65, which advises that amnesty should be extended โ€œas widely as possibleโ€ to low-level fighters but only at the end of hostilities.

โ€œIf we take the definition as given by Article 65 of Additional Protocol 2, it says โ€˜at the endโ€™ of hostilities,โ€ Shehu said. Read more

The McCourt Foundation had announced its 2026 marathon date on March 15, one day before the 2025 marathon and two days before the Oscars made their announcement. Read more
