500-level varsity student found dead in Ondo (Leadership)
A final year female student of Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba Akoko (AAUA) in Ondo State identified as Modupe Ayandare was Monday morning found dead in Akungba, Akoko South West local government area of the state.
Ayandare, a 500-level student of the Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture was found hanging beside the church she attended, located off the campus of the state-owned institution.
LEADERSHIP gathered that the deceased was found dead around 4:00 am on Monday in a white garment church cloth. Read more
Mutfwang condemns attack on task force, traders in Bukuru (Sun)
Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has condemned in very strong terms, the attack on the Task Force responsible for enforcing Executive Order 003 by some criminal elements.
The Task Force is mandated to regulate buildings and vehicular traffic within the Greater Jos master plan. The sad incident occurred on Monday at the Bukuru market in Jos South Local Government Area, where lawless individuals brazenly assaulted members of the joint Task Force.
In a statement signed by the Director of Press and Public Affairs Gyang Bere, Mutfwang expressed deep regret over the shameful actions of these miscreants, who not only targeted the Task Force but also endangered the lives of traders. Read more

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Monday paid a visit to the wife of the President, Remi Tinubu, in Lagos.
A media aide to the President’s wife, Busola Kukoyi, said Obasanjo came felicitating with her principal on the occasion of the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.
“Former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and the First Lady of the Federal of Nigeria Senator Oluremi Tinubu after receiving the Former President who came felicitating on the Sallah Celebration on Monday 17th June,” Kukoyi wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter). Bandits gun down Kaduna villagers in broad daylight (DailyTrust)
There was confusion in the Ewehko community under Maro Ward in Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna following an attack by bandits, which led to the killing of five villagers.
The villagers were said to be gunned down while attending a local meeting.

Ijaw community protests rotation of chieftaincy stool (Nation)
Residents of Furupagha Ijaw community in Odigbo local government area of Ondo State have staged a peaceful protest against a supposed agreement to rotate the Ibeodiowe of Ebijaw chieftaincy stool.
They protested to the Alagbaka Governor’s office with placards saying the agreement was aimed to balkanise their land and share it with those they termed trespassers from Edo and Delta states.
The proposed agreement, according to government sources, was to rotate the chieftaincy stool to sustain peace in the area. Read more
NAF jets kill 80 terrorists in Katsina (Punch)
The Nigerian Air Force on Monday said that airstrikes by the air component of Operation Hadarin Daji have killed over 80 terrorists and destroyed more than 45 motorcycles in Katsina.
The Air Force said the operation which was conducted on June 15 was targeted at a terrorist’s hideout located in Faskare Local Government Area of the state.
A statement by the NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, AVM. Edward Gabkwet said the strikes were carried out after intelligence reports indicated that over 100 terrorists were burning houses in a settlement approximately five kilometres from Gidan Kare Village. Read more

The Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) has joined the family of its founder, Dr Fredrick Fasehun, in expressing indignation for the omission of his name by President Bola Tinubu ,in his list of heroes of June 12 rolled out in the 2024 Democracy Day broadcast.
The president of the organisation, Otunba Wasiu Afolabi, claimed in a statement on Monday that neither President Tinubu nor his handlers had bothered to acknowledge OPC’s pro-Tinubu campaign a whole year after the new regime’s inauguration, in spite of the OPC having worked for the President’s victory in the 2023 elections.
Afolabi recalled that the late medical doctor cum activist sacrificed his livelihood and liberty to fight for the disannulment of the June 12 mandate of the late Bashorun M.K.O. Abiola and the restoration of democracy through OPC and the national Democratic Coalition (NADECO). Read more

Mohammad Farooq, 28, was arrested with a pressure cooker outside the Gledhow Wing of St James’s Hospital in Leeds, in the early hours of January 20.

A tourist found dead on a remote Greek Island just days after Brit TV doctor Michael Mosley is believed to have washed up on a beach after it was searched.
Toby Sheets, 55, was the tourist whose body was found on the tiny island of Mathraki, west of Corfu, by other holidaymakers. Authorities believe he was “washed out of the sea.”

Sir Ian McKellen has been hospitalized after falling off stage during a performance of Player Kings at a theatre in London.

Arrests in Harare: CCC leader Jameson Timba and 70 activists detained (AfricaNews)
Harare witnessed a significant police operation on Sunday as Jameson Timba, interim leader of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), and 70 other activists were arrested for allegedly holding an unauthorized political meeting.
The arrests were confirmed by Zimbabwe Republic Police national spokesperson Paul Nyathi.

Teen kitefoiler JJ Rice dies month before Olympics debut (UPI)
Teen kitefoiler Jackson James Rice, who was seeking to become the first caucasian to represent Tonga in the Olympics, died in a diving accident this past weekend.
The 18-year-old Rice, known as JJ, planned to compete in sailing at the Summer Olympics in Paris next month. He died Saturday in Faleloa on the group of islands of Ha’apai, where his parents Darren and Nina Rice own the Matafonua Island Lodge.
His father told the Matangi Tonga newspaper his son was free diving from a boat when he is suspected to have suffered a shallow water blackout. Read more
