56-year-old ex-boxer punches wife to coma over tv remote control (DailyTrust)
A former lightweight boxer, Moses Olapade (56), has been arrested by the police for allegedly beating his wife to a coma in Akure, Ondo State.
City & Crime gathered that the incident happened at No 9, Odamo Street, Oke-Aro community in Akure South LGA.
Olapade, who is now a truck driver, was said to have punched his wife, Atinuke, after he returned home from a journey. Read more
Commercial motorcyclist injured as robbers invade Lagos community (Punch)
Suspected armed robbers who specialise in stealing motorcycles were said to have invaded a community in the Akowonjo Local Government Area of Lagos State, leaving behind tales of woes.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the armed men invaded Vincent Street in the area around 3am last Wednesday, shattering the peace being experienced in the area.
Some residents of the area told our correspondent that the armed men were conveyed to the area in a Sienna car, one minibus and one tricycle. Read more

Despite the death of eight people in the recent tragic Lagos train-bus collision at PWD Bus Stop, Lagos, some traders are still selling their commodities along rail tracks in the metropolis.
When The Guardian visited the spot, yesterday, traders were seen selling their wares along the rail tracks, without considering the health hazards. There have been catalogues of rail mishaps on the same corridor.
For instance, in 2020, after the COVID-19 lockdown, an accident involving a moving train, a bus and a Toyota Sports Utility Van (SUV) occurred near the Nigerian Army Shopping Arena in Oshodi. Read more

Mothers waiting for treatment of their ailing newborn at Isolo General Hospital, Lagos, can now access a well-furnished ward, called Mother’s Room.
The Mother’s Room was unveiled at the Maternal and Child Centre, on the right side called Mothers Post/Prenatal Ward.
Oluwaseun Oladimeji, Oluwatayo Ayeni and Oluwasina Ayeni donated the room in memory of their mum, Mrs Mary Ibukun Ayeni, who died 1991 at Isolo after birth complications. Read more
Rano Air begins operation with 35 passengers to MMA2, Lagos (Leadership)
Rano Air, a Nigerian-owned brand new airline, on Sunday, made its inaugural landing at the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal Two (MMA2), Ikeja, Lagos.
The aircraft, an Embraer E145, is a 50-seater commercial aircraft that will be flying between Lagos and Abuja, Kano, Maiduguri and Sokoto. On this flight, it conveyed 35 passengers from Kano State and disembarked them at MMA2.
The aircraft was making an immediate turnaround to Kano with 45 passengers that were seen already buying their tickets at the ticketing counter. Read more

Terrorists attack Kaduna church, abduct 40 worshippers (Vanguard)
Some terrorists, on Sunday, abducted over 40 worshipers at Bege Baptist Church, in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
Disclosing the incident to a journalist, yesterday, the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, in Kaduna State, Rev. Joseph Hayab, however, said 15 of the abducted worshippers escaped and have since returned to their respective families.
He said: “About 40 people were, on Sunday, abducted by gunmen during a church service at Bege Baptist Church, Madala, along Buruku Baringi road, in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State. Read more
LAUTECH doctors withdraw services over conditions of service, unpaid salaries (ThisDay)
Doctors at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, Oyo State began an industrial action yesterday over poor conditions of service.
The industrial action was called by the hospital’s chapter of the Medical and Dental Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) and announced by its Chairman, Dr Ayobami Alabi and Secretary, Dr Taiwo Alatishe in a statement.
They stated that the decision was based on a congress resolution arrived at, at the expiration of an ultimatum earlier issued. Read more

Cause of death revealed for actor Ray Liotta (FarOut)
The late actor Ray Liotta died due to acute heart failure and suffering from respiratory issues, according to a new report. Liotta was 67 when he passed away last year.
The Goodfellas star died in the Dominican Republic, where he was shooting the upcoming film “Dangerous Waters”. Now, TMZ has obtained documents from the Dominican Republic which state his death was a natural and nonviolent event. As well as having acute heart failure, and respiratory insufficiency, Liotta also had pulmonary edema, which is the medical term for fluid in the lungs.
Additionally, Liotta reportedly had atherosclerosis, which occurs when arteries become tighter due to plaque in the area, which can lead to a heart attack or stroke. Following the actor’s death, Martin Scorsese said: “He was so uniquely gifted, so adventurous, so courageous as an actor.” Read more

Universal Pictures is teasing the new film “Oppenheimer.”
The studio shared a trailer for the biopic Monday featuring Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, an American theoretical physicist known as the “father of the atomic bomb.”
Oppenheimer is written and directed by Christopher Nolan (Inception, Dunkirk). The film is based on the Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin book American Prometheus, which explores how Oppenheimer’s work on the Manhattan Project led to the creation of the first atomic bomb during World War II. Read more
Fire at gold mine in Peru’s Arequipa kills at least 27 workers (AlJazeera)
At least 27 workers have been killed in a fire at a remote gold mine in southern Peru in one of the worst mining accidents in the country’s recent history, according to authorities.
Officials told local media on Sunday that the miners were working about 100m (330 feet) below the surface when a short circuit on Saturday sparked a blaze that quickly engulfed one of the tunnels.
Images on social media showed flames and smoke erupting from the hillside at La Esperanza 1 mine in the Arequipa region. Read more
Texas mall shooting: Officials probe gunman’s possible far-right links (BBC)
Federal authorities are investigating whether the gunman who killed eight people including children at a Dallas shopping mall had far-right links.
The attacker, who was shot dead at the scene by a police officer, has been named as Mauricio Garcia, aged 33.
Investigators are reviewing social media to look into his ideology, the BBC’s US partner CBS news reports.
During the attack he wore a clothing patch with the letters RWDS which stands for “Right Wing Death Squad”. Read more
Sudanese hoping for breakthrough as Jeddah peace talks underway (AlArabiya)
Sudanese are pinning their hopes on talks in Jeddah between envoys of warring factions to end bloodshed that has killed hundreds and triggered a mass exodus, but there is no sign lasting relief will come anytime soon.
There has been no word on the progress of the talks which began on Saturday between the army and the rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the Saudi Red Sea port city.
The combatants have said they would only try to tackle humanitarian issues like safe passage, not an end to the war. Numerous ceasefires have been violated since conflict erupted on April 15. Read more
US therapist pleads guilty in Okagbare Olympic doping case (Vanguard)
A Texas therapist faces up to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty on Monday to supplying performance-enhancing drugs to Olympic athletes including banned Nigerian sprinter Blessing Okagbare, US authorities said.
Eric Lira, a “naturopathic” therapist based in the city of El Paso, is the first individual to be convicted under a new US law introduced in the wake of Russia’s state-backed Olympic doping scandals, the Department of Justice said in a statement.
The 2020 law, named after Russian whistleblower Grigory Rodchenkov, enables US authorities to prosecute individuals involved in international doping fraud conspiracies. Read more

Super Falcons captain Onome Ebi is set to break former American captain Christie Pearce’s record as the oldest player ever to feature at the Women’s World Cup, after she turned 40 on Monday, The PUNCH reports.
Ebi is the first African footballer to play in five World Cup tournaments — 2003, 2007, 2011 and 2015, 2019 — and she is about to add more to her list of honours.

Jake Paul has insisted he will rematch Tommy Fury despite instead announcing he will fight Nate Diaz in August.
Paul suffered the maiden loss of his boxing career in Saudi Arabia earlier this year after losing by split decision against bitter rival Fury. It was expected the pair would do battle in an immediate sequel given the ‘Problem Child’ had access to a rematch clause as part of their initial agreement.
However in surprise fashion, Paul announced that he would instead be facing fellow rival and ex-UFC fighter Diaz in a clash on August 5 in the US. But despite ending chances of the pair renewing their battle in the summer, Paul has now suggested it will be re-explored at a later date. Read more

Thailand upset the top-seeded United States to advance to the final of the LPGA International Crown in San Francisco on Sunday as Australia downed Sweden to set up a showdown with the Asian giant-killers.
Thailand, the sixth seeds, reached the final with a 2-1 victory over the Americans, sealing their win after sisters Moriya and Ariya Jutanugarn defeated world No. 1 Nelly Korda and Danielle Kang 1-up in the final foursomes match at Harding Park.
