6 Lagos BDC operators arrested for abduction of colleague’s child (Channels)
The Lagos State Police Command has arrested six Bureau De Change operators who allegedly conspired to abduct an eight-year-old child of their colleague.
Disclosing this in a terse statement tweeted on Tuesday, the police spokesman in the state, Benjamin Hundeyin said the child was released three days later bound in a sack.
He stated that preliminary investigation revealed that all the suspects are BDC operators in the same business district in Lagos.
He said the suspects whose names were withheld will be arraigned at the end of investigation. Read more
Alleged Drug Trafficking: Court allows NDLEA to remand Adekaz for another 15 days (Channels)
A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos today granted permission to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to further detain the owner of Adekaz Hotels & alleged drug lord, Alhaji Abdallah Kazeem Muhammad also known as Alhaji Ademola Afolabi Kazeem Afolabi or Adekaz, in its custody, for another period of 15 days.
The court presided over by Justice Daniel Osiagor, extended the remand order, while granting an exparte motion filed and argued by the NDLEA’s lawyer, Mr. Abu Ibrahim.
In urging court to extend the remand order, Mr. Abu said that the request was made pursuant to sections 35(1)(c), (4), (5) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended); Section 3 of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act Cap N30 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004; Order 26 Rule 6 of the Federal High Court (Civil Procedure) Rules 2019 and under the court’s inherent Jurisdiction. Wanted drug baron arrested as NDLEA nabs woman linked to Pakistani cocaine syndicate (Channels)
Ten days after he was declared wanted, operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, have arrested fleeing Lagos socialite and owner of Adekaz Hotels, Alhaji Ademola Afolabi Kazeem (a.k.a Alhaji Abdallah Kazeem Muhammed) over offences bordering on exportation and trafficking of illicit drugs as well as money laundering.
The Agency had on Tuesday 1st November declared the suspect wanted following his failure to honour NDLEA invitations and an order granted by a Federal High Court in Lagos. The wanted drug kingpin was uncovered as the sponsor of some traffickers arrested by the anti-narcotics agency in their recent attempt to export cocaine to Dubai, UAE and other destinations outside Nigeria.
According to a statement by NDLEA spokesman, Mr Femi Babafemi, the search for Kazeem however paid off on Thursday 10th Nov when he was successfully taken into custody where he is currently being interviewed. Read more
Lagos police arrest 11 suspected cultists (Punch)
The Lagos State Police Command on Wednesday arrested 11 suspected cultists at a hotel in the Agege area of the state.
The arrest was carried out by men of the Rapid Response Squad, who were on patrol in the early hours of the morning.
According to the statement on the RRS Twitter page, the arrested suspects were members of rival cult groups involved in a violent clash at the hotel.
It was gathered that four suspected cultists were “viciously injured” with broken bottles during the clash. Read more
Ataga’s murder: Chidinma testifies Thursday in trial-within-trial (Punch)
Chidinma Ojukwu, the alleged murderer of the Chief Executive Officer of Super TV, Usifo Ataga, will on Thursday testify before a Lagos State High Court sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos, in a trial within trial to ascertain whether she was coaxed, pressured or induced to make a statement that she killed Ataga by herself.
Chidinma, a 300-level Mass Communication undergraduate, of the University of Lagos, is standing trial over the alleged murder of Ataga.
She is also charged with stealing and forgery alongside one Adedapo Quadri and her sister, Chioma Egbuchu.
At the resumed hearing on Tuesday, the Deputy Director of Prosecution, Adenike Oluwafemi, told the court that the matter was for the continuation of a trial within trial and that her witness (Olufunke Madeyinlo) was in court. Read more
Evangelist tackles Lagos company over land allocation (Punch)
A 66-year-old evangelist, Chinenye Ibeh, has accused the management of a real estate company, Revolutionplus Property Development Company Limited, of refusing to allocate the portion of land she purchased from the company six years ago.
PUNCH Metro gathered that Ibeh paid N3.5m to the company for six plots of land located at the Flourish Royal Garden Estate, Phase 1, Owode, Idaho village, Lagos State.
After the payment in 2016, Ibeh said a deed of agreement was signed, adding that the company, thereafter, refused to give her physical allocation for the land.
She said all efforts to get the company to allocate her portion of land to her had been futile. Read more
Lagos contractor in court over N6m missing kerosene (Punch)
A defendant, Isaac Bassey, has told Magistrate S.K. Matepo of the Samuel Ilori Courthouse in Ogbà, Lagos State, that he is not part of the contract that led to the disappearance of 33,000 litres of kerosene in the state.
Bassey, alongside one Peter, are on trial for allegedly stealing 33,000 litres of kerosene worth N6m and disposing of the delivery truck.
The defendant, who was led in evidence by the defence counsel, U.E. Udo, told the court that he was not a party to the matter.
He said one Ndubuisi contacted him for a delivery truck that could transport 33,000 litres of kerosene, but he could not provide it. Read more
Missing bizwoman found, killed by Lagos ‘‘one-chance’’ robbers (Punch)
A resident of Ibafo in the Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State, Mrs Rosemary Obidinma, who was reported missing, is dead.
PUNCH Metro had reported that the mother of five did not return from her shop at Apapa, Lagos, on November 2.
It was also reported that her son, Daniel, spoke to her last around 10pm.
When Daniel and his siblings called her phone, a man who picked up the call warned them to stop disturbing him, saying he was in Delta State. Read more
‘‘I hear voices in prison asking me to kill somebody’’ says man who killed mum (Punch)
A 41-year-old man, Nurudeen Bakare, standing trial for the murder of his mother, has told a Lagos High Court sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square that he has been hearing voices asking him to kill somebody in prison.
Nurudeen, who lived abroad for 12 years, is standing trial before Justice Modupe Nico-Clay.
The defendant was 37-year-old when he allegedly killed his mother, Abosede, 65, by stabbing her with a kitchen knife.
When the case came up before the court for the commencement of trial on Thursday, the defendant, who was brought from the Ikoyi Custodial Centre, said he was a psychiatric patient. Read more
Lagosian burns wife to death, flees (Punch)
A man, identified simply as Akpos, is on the run after allegedly burning his wife, Risikat, to death at their residence on Ayide Osolo Street, Divine Estate, in the Ijanikin area of Lagos State.
PUNCH Metro gathered that Akpos and Risikat were at their residence when an argument ensued between them.
The argument reportedly degenerated and Akpos, out of annoyance, reached for petrol, poured it on his wife and set her ablaze.
After perpetrating the crime, Akpos was said to have abandoned the woman for dead and fled the premises. Read more
Woman plunges into lagoon after argument with fiancé (Punch)
The Lagos State Government has said efforts to rescue a yet-to-be-identified lady who reportedly jumped from the Third Mainland Bridge into the lagoon on Thursday were unsuccessful.
The lady, who is in her mid-30s, was said to have alighted from a taxi after a heated argument with her fiancé, headed for the railing of the bridge and scaled it into the lagoon.
The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Dr Olufemi Osanyintolu, confirmed the incident in a statement.
He said, “Upon the arrival of the Lagos Response Team at the incident scene, investigation revealed that a lady in her late thirties plunged into the Lagos lagoon.
“Further investigation revealed that the lady alighted from an Uber taxi car on the bridge and plunged into the lagoon. Read more
Policeman, LASTMA official hospitalised after confronting military drivers (Punch)
A police inspector, Ben Thompson, and an official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Caleb Akerele, have been hospitalised after they were allegedly assaulted by two bus drivers who were dressed in military camouflage along the Eko Bridge.
The drivers were reportedly conveying passengers on a one-way route from Costain to Ijora Olopa in commercial buses, when they were accosted by the traffic officers.
The officers reportedly ordered them to turn back, which started an argument.
The drivers were said to have pounced on the officers and beaten them up.
Lagos: 2 arraigned for stealing, dismantling N9.5m truck (Punch)
Two men, Obinna Okeke and Adekola Olushola, have been arraigned before a Yaba Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stealing and dismantling a truck valued at N9.5m.
The defendants were arraigned on four counts of conspiracy, stealing and possession of dismantled parts.
The police prosecutor, Cyril Ajifor, told the court that the accused committed the crime on April 20 at FESTAC Town, Lagos State.
The charges read in part, “That you, Obinna Okeke, Adekola Olushola, and others still at large, on or before August 20 at FESTAC Town area Lagos in the Lagos Magisterial District, did conspire among yourselves to commit felony, to wit; stealing/ dismantling of Mack truck with registration number XW 763 MUS, thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.” Read more
