Lagos may lie close to the equator but most residents will agree that the heat in recent times has been extraordinary. The Lagos State government has even issued a heat wave warning on how to beat the heat. There are those who will swear that this is the effect of climate change on the city of aquatic splendour. While the jury may still be out on that, here are six things to do when the heat gets unbearable.
- Take a lot of water
Cool off by taking a lot of water. This is a great way to cool off and anyone can indulge. It will be even better if you could add ice to the water or take it straight from the refrigerator. Be sure not to drink anything intoxicating or with caffeine as this could heighten anxiety and add to the heat.
- Take a shower
The next best way to cool off is to take a cold shower as many times as possible during the day. A cool shower refreshes your body, and you can meditate for half an hour to refresh your mind each time you leave the shower.
- Stay indoors
Stay indoors and crank up your air conditioner or ventilate your house or office properly. While at it, you could bring out the board games and find someone to play with. Or better still, just relax, do nothing else but enjoy the sounds of silence, and maybe catch a nap!
- Avoid excessive exposure to the hot sun
If you must go out for any reason make sure to avoid the sun rays. Find a shady spot to rest as you navigate your route. Be sure to take an umbrella or sunglasses.
- Find a swimming pool and make a splash
Grab some friends and head to the nearest swimming pool and have a splash. You could also go all by yourself and just have fun splashing around in the water.
- Reach for the ice cubes
Rub ice cubes on your pulse points for instant relief from the heat. Wrap a wet towel around your head to help cool you down even more. You could also fill a plastic child’s swimming pool or tub with water and ice, then jump in.
