7 Yobe council areas prone to flooding, warns GloFAS (Guardian)
Global Flood Awareness System (GloFAS) has warned that seven local councils could be flooded in the next 10 days.
The identified flood-prone councils include Yusufari, Yunusari, Bursari, Geidam, Karasuwa, Nguru and Bade, a border community with Niger Republic.
Director of Information Services in the state’s Ministry of Information, Husna Ibrahim, disclosed, yesterday, in Damaturu that the seven councils are under severity three, while others are at levels two and one. Read more
Residents invade, loot palliatives warehouse in Bayelsa (Vanguard)
Bayelsa State Emergency Management Agency, BYSEMA, yesterday, warned the public that the food items looted from a warehouse in Yenagoa, the state capital by some residents were unfit for human consumption.
The warehouse located in the Kpansia suburb of Yenagoa, used to house relief materials for 2022 flood victims was invaded and looted by residents on Sunday night.
BYSEMA’s Director General, Walamam Igrubia, advised those who pillaged the facility not to consume the items for safety reason. Read more
Obaseki fires Shaibu’s media aides as rift widens (Nation)
The rift between Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki and his deputy Philip Shaibu worsened yesterday.
Shaibu stormed out of the venue of a stakeholders’ colloquium following an allegedly attack on his media crew by the governor’s security aides.
The government announced the disbandment of the crew last night.
The colloquium was organised by the Obaseki administration to mark the 60th anniversary Midwest referendum and the 32nd anniversary of the creation of Edo State from the defunct Bendel State. Read more
Rejected Nominees: Lagos Assembly alleges planned attack on Obasa, members (Independent)
The Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday revealed that there are plans by some people to attack Speaker Mudashiru Obasa and other lawmakers over the recent screening and rejection of some cabinet nominees sent by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
The House, however, said its action concerning the nominees was in tandem with the constitution, which stipulates its responsibilities and, as such, would not succumb to threats and intimidations, including planned sponsored protests and analysis by some civil society groups and activists.

LASG inducts 8,650 new employees (Punch)
The Lagos State Government has held a specialised induction/training ceremony for 8,650 newly employed as well as newly deployed senior officers in the state civil service.
Declaring the induction ceremony open at the Lagos State Public Service Staff Development Centre, Magodo, on Monday, the Head of Service, Mr Hakeem Muri-Okunola, noted that the ceremony also doubles as a specialised Induction Course of newly employed public service officers on Grade Level seven and above on the core principles of the state civil service.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Public Service Office, Olasunkanmi Oyegbola, Muri-Okunola urged the new inductees to leverage the already well-established structure of the state civil service “which is a trailblazer in the country and sub-Saharan Africa.” Read more

NRC MD may face disciplinary action over state of railway facilities at Abuja station (Tribune)
The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Engr. Fidet Okhiria may face disciplinary action on Tuesday, August 29 as he appears before the newly appointed Minister of Transportation to explain why railway facilities at the Idu station are unmaintained.
This is coming at the heels of an unscheduled visit of the Minister, Sen. Said Ahmed Alkali paid at the train station on Sunday.
While on the inspection to ascertain the true state of the rail service, Alkali expressed sadness over the unkept state of facilities at the Idu, Abuja railway station. Read more
NSCDC arrests 20 ‘‘manhole thieves, vandals’’ in FCT (DailyTrust)
The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Capital Territory Command, has nabbed and paraded 20 suspected vandals and manhole thieves.
Commandant of the FCT command, Olusola Odumosu, said most of the arrested thieves were caught stealing manholes and vandalising government property in various areas in the FCT.
Odumosu said the Corps would no longer tolerate the activities of scavengers in the city centre of the FCT. Read more

Lupita Nyong’o has remembered the “joy” she shared with her Black Panther co-star Chadwick Boseman on the third anniversary of his death.
The actress said the pain and “profound” confusion she had experienced following Boseman’s death had taken “months” to recover from.
Boseman, who played King T’Challa in the original 2018 film Black Panther, died from colon cancer at the age of 43, on August 28 2020. Read more
Sudan: Army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan denies deal with RSF, flees to Port Sudan (AfricaNews)
Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan arrived Sunday in the coastal city of Port Sudan, an official statement said, as the country reels from over four months of war with paramilitaries.
Burhan made his first public foray in months earlier this week, having been cloistered within army headquarters in the capital Khartoum ever since the conflict erupted on April 15.
Armed forces have been fending off an unceasing offensive on the headquarters by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, led by Burhan’s deputy turned rival Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.
According to a statement from the ruling sovereign council, Burhan was met Sunday by his deputy Malik Agar and other government officials who — like the United Nations — have relocated operations to Port Sudan, which has been spared the fierce fighting that has gripped other parts of the country. GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, who has taken to rapping on the campaign trail, appears to be backing down after Grammy-award winning rapper Eminem asked him to stop performing his songs at campaign events.
“To the American people’s chagrin, we will have to leave the rapping to the real slim shady,” Tricia McLaughlin, a spokesperson for the campaign, said Monday night in a text message. Read more
Memorial pole ‘stolen’ from Canadian First Nation people set to “return home” from UK museum (Sky)
A memorial pole which was allegedly stolen from a Canadian First Nation people nearly a century ago and put on display in Scotland is being prepared for the long journey back to its place of origin.
The House Of Ni’isjoohl memorial pole arrived in Scotland in 1929 after standing on the banks of the Nass River in Ank’idaa village for around 70 years – but is now on the brink of a 4,200-mile journey home.
The 37 ft tall wooden artefact has been a popular feature at the National Museum Of Scotland in Edinburgh for much of the last century and was the focus of a special ceremony on Monday ahead of final preparations for its return to Canada. Read more
Russian working at US Consulate accused of collecting info for US diplomats (VOA)
Russia’s top domestic security agency said Monday that a detained former employee of the US Consulate in Vladivostok is accused of collecting information about Russia’s action in Ukraine and related issues for U.S. diplomats.
Russia’s Federal Security Service, or FSB, said Robert Shonov is suspected of “gathering information about the special military operation, mobilization processes in Russian regions, problems and the assessment of their influence on protest activities of the population in the run-up to the 2024 presidential election.”
The FSB, the top KGB successor, said it has served summonses to question two U.S. diplomats who allegedly instructed Shonov to collect the information. Read more

The heads of the regional bodies that make up the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) made the request in a collective statement on Monday.
“After recent events and the unacceptable behaviour that has seriously damaged the image of Spanish football, the president’s request that Luis Rubiales resign immediately as president of the RFEF,” said the federation’s regional presidents in a statement following a meeting on Monday. Read more
John Herdman resigns as Canada coach to join Toronto FC (ESPN)
John Herdman quit as coach of Canada’s men’s national team on Monday to move behind the bench at Toronto FC of Major League Soccer starting Oct. 1.
The 48-year-old Briton took over as men’s coach in 2018 after seven years leading Canada’s women and helped the men qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1986. Canada lost to Belgium, Croatia and Morocco at the tournament in Qatar.
Herdman said then he hoped to stay through the 2026 World Cup, which Canada will co-host, but in June he said the Canada Soccer Association needed to increase the team’s funding. Read more
