The Intercollegiate Choral Festival organised by Africa Sings of the Department of Creative Arts, University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos, will hold Tuesday, May 16, 2023, with Red Carpet Reception at 3 pm at the JF Ade Ajayi (University Main) Auditorium.
Africa Sings 2023 will honour and celebrate the choral compositions of the academic and General Overseer of Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM), Professor Daniel K. Olukoya.
Choirs from seven different universities will converge at the University of Lagos to perform in a choral festival, with Professor Albert Oikelome, who teaches a course on choral music, serving as Director of Programmes. The concert, which is held yearly. is a culmination of the course on choral music. While previous editions focused on Africa’s choral music generally, this year’s will feature the compositional works by Olukoya, who is also coming for the concert as a special guest. The Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, will also be in attendance. This is the 10th edition of Africa Sings Intercollegiate Choral Festival.
The seven choirs featuring in the festival are the University of Lagos, University of Ibadan, University of Port Harcourt, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, University of Jos, Lagos State University, and Mountain Top University. Olukoya is also the concert sponsor.
Singer-songwriter, voice coach and Organising Committee Coordinator and, Dupe Ige Kachi, said the concert will be an unforgettable intercollegiate event, adding, “As the university (University of Lagos) of first choice, we are determined to live up to that name as we celebrate Africa Sings (Choral Fest), the 10th edition. We hope our guests will feel our warmth and hospitality, as we set the stage to inspire, uplift and serenade them with beautiful pieces written by the icon Professor Daniel K. Olukoya. We are celebrating the choral compositions or works of Olukoya, not just a work. It’s actually a yearly concert, but the concert couldn’t hold then because of Covid-19 and ASUU strike. Actually, the concerts tend to project the music of Africa. Past concerts featured songs from the continent. But this edition is different in the sense that we are celebrating the man (Olukoya) for his unique contribution to music and his philanthropic gestures to UNILAG over the years.”
