Ambode approves competition to boost reading culture (Nation)
Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has approved the LagosReads Competition to improve reading culture among the residents. In a statement yesterday, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Mr. Obafela Bank-Olemoh, also announced the “Books-of-the-Month” for August. He said the competition, an initiative of the Lagos State Library Board, will hold its maiden edition in October. The governor’s aide said the LagosReads initiative, officially launched in June, was a decisive move by the state government to improve the reading culture of Lagos residents and reward them for reading. Lagos communities: we need public schools (Nation)
Residents of Okerube and Abaranje communities in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State are not happy. The reason: their communities do not have enough public primary and secondary schools. Despite being highly populated, only one public primary school, Okerube Primary School, serves the two communities, which are only accessible through Ikotun, Ijegun or Igando towns. There are no public secondary schools in both areas. To access secondary education, pupils have to go as far as Ijegun, Igando, Ikotun and beyond, a situation the children find tedious, and it is financially unbearable for parents. Read more
Ambode seeks modern governance (Punch)
Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State has said his administration is keen on modernising governance, urging workers in the state to brace themselves for the challenge. Ambode spoke on Thursday at two-day training for workers in Ikeja, saying his administration was examining areas, institutions and practices in the state that needed overhauling to achieve modern governance. The governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Establishments, Training and Pensions, Dr Benson Oke, said he wanted the civil servants to meet contemporary global standard and the expectations of the citizens. Lagos urged to move against roadblock (Nation)
A group, the Concern Citizens of Lagos, has urged the Lagos State government to move against roadblock and other hindrance of vehicles on Lagos Island. It said the hindrance was caused by commercial motorcyclists (okada riders), who have taken over the roads. The group’s Chairman, Mr Saheed Aderoju, who hailed Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for his transformation agenda, said: “We thank our amiable governor for the great work he has done in Lagos since he assumed power. With him in the saddle, Lagos is really working. “We urge the government and other stakeholders to move against the nuisance okada riders on Lagos Island, especially at Idumota under bridge, are causing everyday. Lagos Health Insurance Scheme begins soon (Leadership)
Lagos State Government on Thursday said plans have been concluded to commence the implementation of its long anticipated health Insurance scheme before the end of the last quarter of the year. The General Manager, the Lagos State Health Management Agency, LASHMA, Dr. Peju Adenusi, disclosed this at the Lagos State Media and Communications Healthcare Financing Training, held at in Lagos. She said, “Lagos health scheme is the scheme that has been designed to provide quality health care services, equity of health care services, which means that, regardless of who you are, your social status or educational status, you have access to quality healthcare”. 2019: Lagos lawmakers cautions religious leaders against violence (Independent)
Lawmakers representing Epe Constituency I and II in the state House of Assembly, on Thursday, urged religious leaders to emphasise in their preaching the need to avoid violence before, during and after the 2019 general elections. The lawmakers disclosed this at the constituency stakeholders’ meetings in Epe and Eredo, held as part of the statewide constituency meetings across the state. Avery deworms 1,500 Lagos kids (Guardian)
About 1,500 children were de-wormed at Makoko and Ibasa beach communities of Lagos State at the weekend. The health outreach, which was championed by Avery Nigeria Limited in partnership with Save Our Future Initiative (SOFI) in Lagos, saw mothers bringing out their children en masse to benefit from the programme. Speaking to newsmen, managing director of Avery Nigeria Limited, Mrs. Ebisan Onyema, described the programme as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility to the community, adding that there was a grave need to deworm residents. YABATECH, Chinese Poly to partner on railroad training (Nation)
The Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) is in talks with a Chinese Polytechnic, Guangzhou Panyu, on developing capacity in the area of rail and road transportation development. The partnership was brokered by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, (CCECC), which plies its construction trade in Nigeria, as part of the firm’s Corporate Social Responsibility. Vice President of the Guangzhou Panyu Polytechnic, Liu Jiahuan, noted that Nigeria’s achievements in the area of technical education were made known through the Nigerian Railway Corporation. No compromise on Spirit of Africa award, says LASU VC (Nation)
Vice Chancellor, Lagos State University (LASU), Prof Lanre Adigun Fagbohun, has assured that the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu Spirit of Africa Award scheduled for next month would not be compromised. Fagbohun is also optimistic that the initiative being organised by the university to recognise Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State, and contribute to the renaissance of the African continent, would attract support individuals and corporate bodies, thereby reducing the financial burden on the institution. Lagos airlifts 1,273 in four flights to Saudi Arabia (Vanguard)
A total of 1,273 Lagos pilgrims have been airlifted to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for this year’s hajj exercise. This was made known by the Commissioner for Home Affairs and Amir-ul Hajj, Dr. AbdulHakeem AbdulLateef during a meeting with the members of the Lagos contingent. Dr. AbdulLateef expressed determination and the commitment of the state government to ensure a hitch-free hajj operation through the provision of necessary support and logistics for the pilgrims. “So far, the Akinwunmi Ambode-led government is doing all within its legal framework to guard against any impediment that may cause unnecessary delay or inconvenience to Lagos pilgrims.” Read more
Govt demolishes 9-storeyed structure for not having approval (Punch)
The Lagos State Government on Thursday commenced the demolition of a nine-storeyed building on Dada Fayemi Street, Osapa London in Lekki, Lagos, for failure of the developer to obey the master plan of the area. The demolition, which was done manually due to the location of the building, is expected to be completed within a few days. It was not clear what the building was intended for or who the developer was, as there were no signs on site. The General Manager, Lagos State Building Control Agency, Mr Olalekan Shodeinde, said structures in the area were not expected to be more than four floors, adding that the nine-storeyed structure did not have government approval. The Vice-Chancellor of Anchor University Lagos (AUL), Prof Joseph Afolayan, has led some members of the university’s Senate to the Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi (FIIRO), Lagos to kick- start a partnership and explore ways that FIIRO could assist in promoting the institution’s ideals. Afolayan told FIIRO Director-General, Prof Gloria Elemo, that his university seeks to harness FIIRO’s wealth of technologies to uplift its academic programmes to meet world standard. Police accuse instrumentalist coming from vigil of robbery (Punch)
The police in Lagos have been accused of unlawful arrest of a church instrumentalist, Tope Adeyemi. Punch Metro learnt that Tope, who played guitar for a Pentecostal church, was arrested as he was returning from a vigil on May 24, 2018. Tope’s mother, Mrs Sade Adeyemi, said she was informed of the incident after the 29-year-old was taken to a police station. She said, “He went for a choir rehearsal vigil in his church on College Road, Ogba, on Wednesday. “As he was coming home on Thursday, he alighted from a motorcycle on Amikanle Street, Alagbado, and decided to check his friend in his shop. Why we are after pirates, by NCC chief (Nation)
Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) has renewed its efforts to deal with pirates of creative works across the country. This came on the heels of a recent raid and arrest of pirates at Oshodi, Mushin and Lagos Island markets respectively. NCC Director and Zonal Manager in Lagos Obi Ezeilo, said the commission has been receiving petitions from movie marketers and producers, on the illegal activities of the pirates that reproduce and sell creative works illegally, and decided to take the bold step when it is obvious that money invested in many of the intellectual works is going down the drains. The perpetrators of the illegal business, he said, make so much money and smile to the banks. Read more
Lagos clash: Family demands justice for slain son (Punch)
The family of Toheeb Awolesi, who was killed during a clash in Agboyi community, in the Alapere area Lagos State, has demanded justice for him. This is just as a resident, Florence Ogunseemi, claimed that 24 motorcycles belonging to her were destroyed in the mayhem that followed Toheeb’s death. Punch Metro gathered that Toheeb’s dead body was found in the Agboyi River on Tuesday, August 7, after he was allegedly kidnapped by some non-indigenes, identified as Ila Boys on Monday, August 6, 2018. It was gathered that Ila Boys, who were said to be mostly motorcycle riders, had allegedly been terrorising residents of the community. Read more
LAWMA driver, motor boy die in Lagos crash (Punch)
A driver with the Lagos State Waste Management Authority, Godya Lekya, and his motor boy, Tanko Thomas, have lost their lives in a crash at the Anthony end of Ikorodu Road, Lagos State. Punch Metro gathered that the accident involved a LAWMA truck driven by Lekya and a BRT bus. Our correspondent gathered that the truck driver was speeding and had tried to evade the BRT bus when it crashed into the median, in front of the Conoil Filling Station. The truck was said to have somersaulted several times before it landed on the driver and motor boy. The duo reportedly died on the spot. Policemen from the Anthony division, joined by some officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, were said to have removed the dismembered bodies from the road. Read more

As the Eko Theatre Carnival draws many people to the stage, the Sales and Distribution Executive, at MTN Nigeria, Mr. Adekunle Adebiyi, has said that the company is supporting 37 festivals this year. This is likely to surprise many people who do not know that the country has as many as the indicated number of cultural fiestas. The company is a major supporter of the project. But culture and tourism freaks know that if there is one thing that Nigeria has in abundance, it is festivals. Many of them, including Osun Osogbo, Argungu, Ofala and Eyo festivals, have become so dominant that governments and other bodies cannot but pay attention to them. Frontline Nigerian stand-up comedian, vocalist, and actor, Jephthah Bowoto, popularly known as Akpororo, has joined the long list of Nigerian celebrities who seem to be counting their blessings this season. This time, he’s not moving into a multi -million naira mansion in Lagos, nor acquiring an exotic car. He took to social media to show off a street in Lagos which has been named after him. Meadow Group hails Amokachi (Punch)
Former Nigeria forward Daniel Amokachi was at the Meadow Hall Summer Football Camp 2018 helping to develop young footballers as the Meadow Hall Group continues its sports development programme. The six-day camp, which commenced on July 23 and finished on July 28 at the Mead Green Turf, Meadow Hall, Lekki, Lagos, opened with Amokachi receiving the participants and discussing with them his expectations. The campers enjoyed one-on-one sessions with the former Super Eagles player, who helped Nigeria win the 1994 AFCON in Tunisia. Read more
