Another 575 people have been infected by COVID-19 in Nigeria, bringing the number of confirmed cases in the country to 31,323.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) made this known in an update via tweet Friday night, also announcing that 709 people have died since February 27 when the virus was first detected in the country. That is even as 12,795 have been discharged after testing negative.
Lagos again recorded the highest number with 224 cases, followed by Oyo-85, FCT-68, Rivers-49, Kaduna-39, Edo-31, Enugu-30, Delta-11 and Niger-10.
Others are: Katsina-9, Ebonyi-5, Gombe-3, Jigawa-3, Plateau-2, Nassarawa-2, Borno-2, Kano-1 and Abia-1.
As countries in Africa move ahead with plans to lift lockdown restrictions in a bid to revive their economies, John Nkengasong, head of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has said that new infections across the continent rose by 24 per cent in the past week. Of the 512,039 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the continent, 71 per cent have been reported in just five countries: South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, Ghana and Algeria.
The World Health Organization (WHO) reported a record daily increase in global coronavirus cases, with the total rising by 228,102 in 24 hours.
More than 12.5 million people around the world have been diagnosed with the coronavirus disease, known as COVID-19, and more than 559,000 have died, according to a tally by the Johns Hopkins University. More than 6.8 million patients have recovered.
