The Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) and Assembly of Healthcare Professional Associations (AHPA) have issued a 15-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to address their demands or risk another nationwide strike on October 25, 2024.
This decision followed an emergency meeting held on October 2 where health sector leaders expressed frustration over unresolved issues affecting their members.
According to a communique issued by the unions, the meeting, attended by representatives of various healthcare unions, assessed the government’s poor response to their demands, notably implementation of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) adjustment, which has been a point of contention since 2014. Justice Tsoho returns Kanu’s case file to Justice Nyako (Punch)
The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court of Nigeria, Justice John Tsoho, has rejected the recusal request of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, seeking reassignment to another judge for his trial.
At the hearing on September 24 regarding the seven-count terrorism charges brought against him by the Federal Government, Kanu expressed a loss of confidence in the trial judge, Justice Binta Nyako, and requested her recusal.
Justice Nyako agreed to the request and stated she would send Kanu’s case file back to the Chief Judge for reassignment. Read more

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has described as baseless and unsubstantiated, the allegation by the All Progressives Congress (APC) that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) was smuggling Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines and voters’ registers into the INEC office.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Edo State Dr Anugbum Onuoha, in a statement issued on Friday, said it conducted a comprehensive review of the allegations and found it without merit.
Dr Onuoha noted that INEC is committed to upholding the integrity of the electoral process, adding that at no time was the Bimodal Voters Accreditation System (BVAS) machines or voters’ registers compromised. Read more
Court bars PDP from sacking damagum as acting National Chairman (Leadership)
Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja, on Friday, restrained the National Executive Committee (NEC) and Board of Trustees (BoT) of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) from removing Ambassador Umar Illiya Damagum as the acting National Chairman of the party.
LEADERSHIP earlier reported the suspension of Damagum and the national secretary of the party, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, by a faction of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party on Friday morning.
But, the court said no other person must be recognised as PDP national chairman other than Damagum until the national convention of the party scheduled for December next year. Read more

All Petroleum marketers can now buy products directly from the Dangote Refinery, Lagos.
The decision was reached at a meeting of the technical committee headed by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, according to a statement by the ministry, in Abuja, this afternoon.
This ends the arrangement in which the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) was acting as the sole off-taker of the Dangote Refinery products. Read more

The House also asked the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) to embrace technology-assisted enforcement in the management of road safety and evaluate the effectiveness of enforcement strategies, whether technology-assisted methods are reducing traffic violations and improving safety

North Korea has accused rival South Korea of flying drones to its capital to drop anti-North Korean propaganda leaflets and threatened to respond with force if such flights occur again.
North Korea’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement Friday that South Korean drones were detected on Oct. 3 and Wednesday and Thursday this week.

4 killed, 10 injured in Odessa missile strike as Russia hits Black Sea port for second straight day (UPI)
Russian forces struck the Ukrainian port city of Odessa with ballistic missiles overnight for the second straight day, killing four people, including a 16-year-old girl, and injuring at least 10 other civilians, local officials said Friday.
State Emergency Service workers pulled the bodies of the girl, a 43-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man from beneath a two-story residential-commercial building after it was razed in a direct hit by a missile, Odessa Gov. Oleh Kiper reported on social media.
A fourth person, a woman, died of her injuries in the hospital. Nine others were hospitalized, four of them in a serious condition. Read more
Nihon Hidankyo: Japanese nuclear bomb survivors’ group wins Nobel Peace Prize 2024 (Independent)
A Japanese organisation of atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki has won the Nobel Peace Prize for it’s “efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons”.
The group, known as Nihon Hidankyo or Hibakusha, which is a Japense term to describe the survivors of the atomic bombings, was awarded the prize in the Norwegian capital of Oslo on Friday morning.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee, announcing the award, said in its citation: “Hibakusha is receiving the Peace Prize for its efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through witness testimony that nuclear weapons must never be used again.” Read more
New York family sues funeral home after 96-year-old woman’s casket is sent to wrong country (NBC)
A New York City family is suing a funeral home for mistakenly sending their mother’s casket to another country for burial.
Carmen Maldonado died two days after her 96th birthday. Her wish was to be buried in Ecuador next to her husband. Her family, who lives in Queens, was preparing for the funeral in Ecuador when they saw a video posted on TikTok that shocked them.
The video showed a family in Guatemala shocked to find a woman’s body in the casket at the funeral for their 38-year-old son. It was Carmen Maldonado. Read more

The Israeli military “repeatedly” fired at UNIFIL headquarters and positions in southern Lebanon, injuring two members of the peacekeeping force, the United Nations says, as Israel presses on with its assault on Hezbollah.
UNIFIL – the UN Interim Force in Lebanon – said on Thursday that two of its peacekeepers were injured after an Israeli tank “fired its weapon” at a guard tower at the group’s headquarters, located in the border area town of Naqoura.
The attack on the tower had caused the two peacekeepers to fall. “The injuries are fortunately, this time, not serious, but they remain in hospital,” said UNIFIL in a statement. Read more
