ASUU threatens fresh strike over failed 2009 agreement, others (Leadership)

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has, again, threatened a nationwide strike, accusing the Federal Government of failing to honour longstanding agreements on the revitalisation and proper funding of Nigeria’s public universities.

The Union stated this during a press conference at the University of Jos (UNIJOS) on Thursday.

Speaking at the briefing, ASUU President, Dr. Christopher Piwuna, said lecturers have endured over two years of broken promises and delay tactics by the government. Read more 

Police nab 6 over snatching, sale of Toyota Corolla in Lagos (Nation) 

Detectives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested five suspected members of a car-snatching syndicate, along with the alleged buyer of a stolen Toyota Corolla sold for ₦500,000.

According to police spokesperson CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the suspects, identified as Favour Sunday (25), Ikot Moses (28), Dickson Ighobue Harrison (35), Joshua Adedamola (27) and Daniel Jonathan (26), were apprehended following an intelligence-led operation carried out by operatives of Ilasan Division.

The arrest stemmed from a robbery incident reported on August 1, 2025, by a taxi driver, who alleged that three men he picked up along Platinum Way, Jakande, Lekki, ordered his services but turned on him mid-trip. Read more 

NELFUND announces new guidelines on students loan disbursement (VON)

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has announced that its upkeep disbursement to beneficiary students will now be strictly tied to the academic session of each institution.

This was in a statement released on Thursday by the Director, Strategic Communications of NELFUND, Mrs. Oseyemi Oluwatuyi.

She said the move was to enhance service delivery.

NRC says Abuja-Kaduna train incident resolved (Guardian)

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed that one of the coaches’ wheels on the Abuja-Kaduna Train Service (AKTS) experienced a hot axle several kilometres from Rigasa Station in Kaduna.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday evening, is attributed to hot wheel friction resulting from abnormal temperatures caused by excessive heat on the journal housing.

In a statement, the Chief Public Relations Officer for the Management, Callistus Unyimadu, said the situation was immediately brought under control and the train marshalled to Kaduna for safety. Read more

‘Things Fall Apart’ actor Fabian Adibe dies at 81 (Punch) 

Nollywood actor, Fabian Adibe, famed for his role in the classic television series, Things Fall Apart, is dead.

PUNCH Online gathered that the veteran actor died at the age of 81.

Journalist and movie producer, Seun Oloketuyi, confirmed the death in a social media post on Wednesday.

Nigeria’s corporate FX inflows rose to $1.2bn in July – Report (Sun)

Foreign exchange (FX) inflows from non-bank corporates into Nigeria’s FX market rose sharply in July, offering some relief to dollar liquidity as the naira continued to face pressure.

According to data quoted from FMDQ by FBNQuest Merchant Bank, corporates injected about  $1.2 billion into the market in July 2025, up from $800 million in June.

The rise signals stronger participation from private sector players, with analysts attributing the growth to improved export receipts, particularly from upstream oil companies, repatriated earnings, and greater use of formal FX channels. Read more

15% of Nigerian girls aged 15–19 are mothers or pregnant — FG (Tribune)

The Federal Government has disclosed that 15 per cent of Nigerian girls aged 15 to 19 are already mothers or pregnant, raising concern about adolescent reproductive health and gender inequality in the country.

Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, made this known on Tuesday during the validation and adoption of Nigeria’s first National Policy on Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management (MHHM).

Represented by the ministry’s permanent secretary, Maryam Keshinro, the minister also revealed that more than 7.3 million adolescent girls and women suffer from undernutrition, with 55 per cent affected by anaemia, conditions she partly linked to poor menstrual hygiene and limited access to affordable sanitary products. The Cannes Jury Prize-winning drama by Mascha Schilinski will represent Germany in the best international feature film category.

President Donald Trump repeated his demand for Tina Peters to be released from prison and threatened “harsh measures” if she remains detained.

Peters, 69, is a Colorado election clerk convicted of tampering with voting machines after the 2020 presidential election. She is serving a nine-year sentence in La Vista Correctional Facility.

“FREE TINA PETERS, a brave and innocent Patriot who has been tortured by Crooked Colorado politicians, including the big Mail-In Ballot supporting the governor of the State,” Trump posted to Truth Social on Thursday morning.

Russia launches biggest wave of strikes on Ukraine for weeks (BBC)

Russia has launched 574 drones and 40 missiles on Ukraine in one of the heaviest bombardments in weeks, Ukrainian officials say.

One person was killed in a drone and missile strike on the western city of Lviv, while 15 others were reported wounded in an attack on the south-western Transcarpathia region.

The attacks came as US President Donald Trump spearheads diplomatic moves to halt the war. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said the strikes highlighted why efforts to bring it to an end were “so critical”.  Read more

6 ‘severed heads’ found with message in roadside horror (Complex)

A motorist in a normally peaceful area of Mexico encountered a horror show along the side of the road.

Six severed heads, belonging to unidentified men, were propped up along a road “between the Mexican states of Puebla and Tlaxcala” on August 19, People reported.

The motive was not immediately clear, according to People, but local news reports make it clear that a war between criminal organizations led to the gory display. Read more

European stocks retreated on Thursday as regional traders monitored corporate updates from the region.

By 11:12 a.m. in London (6:12 a.m. ET), the pan-European Stoxx 600

 was down 0.3%. The U.K.’s FTSE 100 was 0.2% lower after notching a second straight record closing high, while the French CAC 40

 shed 0.5% and Germany’s DAX

 dipped 0.2%.

The promotional rights to the rematch are scheduled to be auctioned off on August 26, 2025 at 12 noon.

Julio Cesar Chávez Jr. detained in Mexico after being deported from US by ICE (Complex) 

Boxer Julio Cesar Chávez Jr. has been jailed in Mexico after being deported from the United States by ICE. Deadline reports that Chávez was handed over to authorities and subsequently incarcerated in prison in the northern state of Sonora. The boxer had a warrant out for his arrest in Mexico due to alleged arms and drug trafficking, plus alleged ties to the Sinaloa Cartel.

Chávez was deported from the United States on Aug. 18.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced that it had arrested Chávez in July and was in the process of an “expedited removal” so the boxer could be taken to Mexico. Read more
