Bandits kill 8 farmers, rustle 1,260 livestock in Sokoto (Leadership)
Cross borders fleeing bandits killed eight farmers while working on their farms at the borders Community of Gudu local government area of Sokoto State on Friday.
The bandits alleged to have entered Nigeria from Republic of Mali also rustled at least 1,260 domestic animals comprising 260 cows, 1,000 sheep and goats belonging to people in Gudu communities.

Kaduna State unveils 10-year climate change policy (ThisDay)
In a bid to tackle the impact of climate change in Kaduna State, the government has unveiled its 10- year climate change policy.
Speaking during the unveiling ceremony, Governor Uba Sani said the goal of the policy is to promote low carbon, climate resilient, gender responsive and sustainable socio-economic development in the state.
“The 2024 Climate Change Policy is the first in northern Nigeria which will address the increased extreme weather events and aligns with the National Climate Change Policy (2021-2030). Developed with input from various stakeholders and supported by organizations like ACReSAL and Lafiya Projects. This policy aims to reduce emissions, enhance climate resilience, and integrate climate considerations into state planning,” he said. Read more
Police to conduct autopsy on Justice Ajumogobia daughter’s body (Punch)
The Lagos State Police Command has said an autopsy will be conducted on the remains of Aribemchukwu, the slain daughter of Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia.
PUNCH Metro reported that the deceased, popularly called Chuchu, was killed in her Parkview Estate residence in the Ikoyi area of Lagos State.
Although a family source said she was killed Tuesday night, her lifeless body was discovered on Wednesday morning outside the gate of her residence. Read more
NDLEA intercepts multiple drug consignments going to US, UK (Tribune)
Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have intercepted multiple consignments of illicit drugs concealed in tins of Cerelac baby food and clothes going to the United States and the United Kingdom at the Lagos International Airport and a courier firm in Lagos.
No less than 36 parcels of a strong strain of cannabis concealed in six cartons of tins of branded Nestle Cerelac baby food, with six containers in each package,, were recovered at the SAHCOL export shed of Lagos airport on July 31, 2024.
A statement by the spokesman of the NDLEA, Mr Femi Babafemi, on Sunday said the psychotropic substance has a total weight of 18.50 kilogrammes. Read more

Venezuelan violinist Samuel Vargas Teixeira as been appointed lecturer in music (violin) at Columbus State University’s Schwob School of Music in Columbus, Georgia, US. He will also become the school’s chamber music coordinator and teach applied lessons, string literature, violin literature, violin pedagogy, violin excerpts and a music appreciation class for both non-music and music majors. His violin studio will comprise seven students and the position begins on 12 August 2024.

The BBC is removing footage of Huw Edwards from its publicly available archives after its former top newsreader pleaded guilty to making indecent images of children.
Until his suspension last year due to an unrelated sexual misconduct scandal, Edwards was one of the main presenters on BBC One’s News at Ten and fronted events including the death and state funeral of Elizabeth II and the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla.
BBC bosses first plan to remove material featuring Edwards from family and entertainment content on its iPlayer service, some of which include his news bulletins, according to The Observer newspaper. Read more

Far-right demonstrators have attacked at least two hotels housing asylum seekers, as the United Kingdom grapples with its worst riots in 13 years.
On Sunday, hundreds of people gathered near a Holiday Inn Express hotel used to house asylum seekers near the northern town of Rotherham, throwing bricks at police and breaking several hotel windows, and then setting bins on fire.
Footage from UK broadcaster Sky News showed a line of police officers with shields facing a barrage of missiles, including bits of wood, chairs and fire extinguishers, as they sought to prevent the rioters, many of them masked, from entering the hotel. Read more

Belgium will not take part in the Olympic triathlon mixed relay event on Monday after one of their athletes fell ill.
Claire Michel, who competed in the women’s triathlon Wednesday, was hospitalized on Sunday before returning to the Olympic village later in the day.

Noah Lyles wins gold in 100 meters at Paris Olympics to become fastest man in the world (ABC)
American sprinter Noah Lyles won the gold in the 100 meters at the Paris Olympics in a photo finish, edging out Jamaican Kishane Thompson for gold and taking the title of the world’s fastest man.
Lyles finished in 9.79 seconds — officially 9.784 — edging out Thompson by just .005 seconds for the gold. Thompson, after cruising through the qualifying rounds, was the favorite in the race.
