Flood kills 44 in 18 states – NEMA (Tribune)
No fewer than 44 persons have died across 42 Local Government Areas during the flood disaster that ravaged 18 States of the Federation, according to latest report released by National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
The NEMA Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar disclosed this in Abuja during the National Emergency Coordination Forum meeting of stakeholders convened to review the current flood situation and strengthen synergy towards efficient mitigation and response strategies to also address associated public health concerns in the country.
Mrs. Umar who expressed grave concern over the ugly development, underscored the need to strengthen partnership towards ensuring effective implementation of mitigation strategies and timely response to avert the tendency of more losses from the disaster. Read more
Woman arrested for alleged killing of husband in Abuja (Channels)
Operatives of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command attached to Pegi Police Division have arrested one Rahimat Salaum in connection to the alleged killing of her husband.
The police said the 23-year-old female suspect was arrested after credible intelligence.
A statement signed by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer Josephine Adeh said the suspect was attempting to flee with the belongings of the paralysed husband in a mini truck when police operatives swooped in and apprehended her. Read more

The approval given by President Bola Tinubu for the sale of crude oil to the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in naira is going to force the prices of domestically refined petroleum products to crash, oil marketers, refiners, and experts stated on Monday.
Operators in the downstream oil sector commended the move by the President, stating that it would boost the outputs of domestic refineries, shore up the country’s foreign exchange reserves, and strengthen the naira.

Sigourney Weaver will make her West End debut as Prospero in a new production of “The Tempest,” while Tom Hiddleston and Hayley Atwell will star in Much Ado About Nothing, it has been announced.
The two plays will be part of a season of Shakespeare by The Jamie Lloyd Company at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane.
They will be the first plays by the Bard to be staged at the theatre since Peter Brook’s production of “The Tempest” starring John Gielgud in 1957. Read more

The National Association of Black Journalists is facing backlash after announcing Monday that Donald Trump would take part in a Q&A at the organization’s annual convention.
The group announced the session late Monday, with the convention set to kick off Wednesday in Chicago. The former president will discuss issues facing the Black community through questions from ABC News, FOX News and Semafor journalists.

Hezbollah commander survives Israeli strike (GulfTimes)
Israel struck Hezbollah’s stronghold in southern Beirut yesterday in retaliation for rocket fire from Lebanon that killed 12 children over the weekend, saying it had targeted the commander responsible for the attack.
A source close to the Iran-backed militant group confirmed that “a leading commander” was the target of the strike, which hit near the group’s decision making body, the Shura Council.
The source added that two people were killed in the strike, but was unable to confirm if the commander was among them. Read more
Landslides caused by heavy rains kill at least 70 in southern India (NPR)
Multiple landslides triggered by torrential rains in southern India have killed 70 people, and many others are feared trapped under the debris, officials said Tuesday, with rescue operations being hampered by bad weather.
The landslides hit hilly villages in Kerala state’s Wayanad district early Tuesday and destroyed many houses and a bridge, but authorities have yet to determine the full scope of the disaster. Rescuers were working to pull out people stuck under mud and debris, but their efforts were hampered by blocked roads and unstable terrain.
P M Manoj, press secretary to the Kerala chief minister, said the landslides had killed at least 70 people so far. Local media reported that most of the victims were tea estate workers. Read more
