VAT: Appeal Court to rule on Friday over Lagos request to join case (Punch)
The Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal has scheduled a ruling for 2 pm on Friday in an application filed by Lagos State to be made a respondent in the appeal filed by the Federal Inland Revenue Service.
The appeal by the FIRS is against the August 9, 2021 judgment by Justice Steven Pam of the Federal High Court in Port-Harcourt, voiding the Value Added Tax Act and holding that states could collect VAT.
Details about the ruling were contained on the court’s cause list pasted on its notice board.
A three-man panel, led by Justice Haruna Simon Tsanami, after listening to arguments by lawyers to the parties on September 16, said they would be informed when the ruling was ready. Read more
October 1: Eschew violence, embrace peace, YAF advises Nigerian youths (Vanguard)
A coalition under the aegis of the Yoruba Appraisal Forum (YAF), on Thursday advised Nigerian youths not to allow themselves to be used by some aggrieved persons and groups to instigate violence and cause troubles in the country under the guise of protesting against perceived injustices.
YAF also kicked against the planned ‘lockdown or sit-at-home’ by some Yoruba groups scheduled to commence from Monday, next week, in solidarity with the Indigenous People of Biafra’s sit-at-home action in the South-East.
YAF warned that such planned protests and lockdown are aimed at bringing down the country and the incumbent administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.
The Forum stated this against the backdrop of plans by some groups to carry out protests across the country against the Federal Government on October 1 and the plan to commence the planned sit-at-home in solidarity with IPOB from next Monday.
YAF National Coordinator, Adeshina Animashaun, gave this warning at a press conference in Lagos to mark the 61st Independence anniversary celebrations. Read more
No scientific evidence to prove COVID-19 vaccine causes infertility – NPHCDA (Guardian)
The National Primary Health Care Development Agency, (NPHCDA) says there is no scientific evidence suggesting COVID-19 vaccination can cause infertility in men or women.
The Executive Director, NPHCDA, Dr Faisal Shuaib, told News Agency of Nigeria(NAN), on Thursday in Abuja that the COVID-19 vaccination among populations of reproductive age was safe.
”All available COVID-19 vaccines have demonstrated high efficacy among their respective clinical trial endpoints.
”Additionally, a growing body of evidence suggests that fully vaccinated people are less likely to have an asymptomatic infection or transmit SARS-CoV-2 to others,” he said. Read more
Okowa signs anti-open grazing bill (DailyTrust)
Delta Governor, Sen. (Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa, on Thursday, signed the Delta State Livestock, Breeding, Rearing and Marketing Regulation Bill, 2021, otherwise known as Anti-Open Grazing Bill, with a call on the Federal Government to assist interested farmers to establish ranches across the country.
Okowa made this known after assenting to two Bills passed by Delta State House of Assembly, at Government House, Asaba.
The Bills, including Delta State Urban and Regional Planning Bill 2020, were presented to Okowa by the Speaker of the Assembly, Chief Sheriff Oborevwori, in company with principal officers of the Assembly.

Oyo applies to join Rivers in FIRS appeal on VAT collection (Guardian)
The Government of Oyo State has asked the Court of Appeal sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, for joinder in the suit instituted by the Rivers State government to take over the collection of the Value Added Tax (VAT) from the Federal Government.
The suit, instituted by the Attorney-General of Oyo State, Prof. Oyelowo Oyewo, is seeking an order of the appellate court to enable Oyo State to join the suit as an interested party.
In the suit, the government of Oyo State is seeking two orders – an order of the court joining the Attorney-General of Oyo State as a respondent on the appeal with suit number FHC/PH/CS/149/2020 and appeal number CA/PH/282/2021, and any other order the court may deem fit.
Oyo State Attorney-General said he was unaware of the suit between the Attorney-General of Rivers State and the Federal Inland Revenue Service at the Federal High Court until the judgement was delivered. Read more
Police arraign couple over alleged N5.2m contract scam (Guardian)
A businessman, Hussaini Shehu, and his wife, Farida Idris, were docked at a Wuse Zone 6 Chief Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, on Thursday.
They are facing a four-count charge of conspiracy, impersonation, criminal breach of trust and cheating in a N5.2 million contract scam.
Prosecuting ASP Fidelis Ogbobe told the court that the complainant, Halima Gambo, resident in Abuja, reported the matter at the Police Area Commander’s office, Metro-Maitama, Abuja.
Ogbobe said that Shehu, who had earlier been arraigned in the same court for alleged possession of counterfeit foreign currencies, conspired with his wife, Farida and two others still at large to defraud the complainant. Read more

Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano has enjoined Anambra State Traditional Rulers to join hands and work towards ensuring that the APGA governorship candidate, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo emerges victorious in the November 6th, 202 election.
The Traditional Rulers under the auspices of Anambra Traditional Rulers Council converged on Professor Dora Akunyili Women’s Development Center, Awka where they met with the governor yesterday.

Sarah Everard murder: Wayne Couzens handed whole-life sentence (BBC)
A Met Police officer who murdered Sarah Everard after kidnapping her under the guise of an arrest has been sentenced to a whole-life prison term.
Wayne Couzens abducted the 33-year-old as she walked home from a friend’s house in south London on 3 March.
During the sentencing of Couzens, the judge said the case was “devastating, tragic and wholly brutal”.
Ms Everard’s family said they were relieved by the fact that Couzens would die in jail. Read more

Ethiopia’s government has ordered the expulsion of seven senior United Nations officials from the country for “meddling” in its internal affairs.
The move on Thursday came as humanitarian workers have been sounding the alarm about limited access to the embattled Tigray region, which has been racked by conflict for nearly 11 months.
The seven, who include individuals from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), have been declared “persona non grata” and given 72 hours to leave the country, a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Thursday. “Mr. Spears loves his daughter Britney unconditionally. For thirteen years, he has tried to do what is in her best interests, whether as a conservator or her father,” Thoreen’s statement began. “This started with agreeing to serve as her conservator when she voluntarily entered into the conservatorship.”

Pop superstar Shakira says she was the victim of a random attack by a pair of wild boars while walking in a park in Barcelona with her eight-year-old son.

It was announced Thursday morning that Williams will not, in fact, be premiering Season 13 on Monday as previously announced as she continues to battle ongoing health issues.
“Wendy will not be returning with new shows on Oct. 4,” the statement, which was posted to the talk show’s Instagram, began. “She has been and continues to be under a doctor’s care and is still not ready to return to work.”
The announcement states the show will return with new episodes on Oct. 18, but it notably does not say Williams will return, leaving open the possibility that guest hosts will fill in for her. Read more

Qatar to host its first ever Formula One Grand Prix in November (AlJazeera)
Qatar will host its first ever Formula One Grand Prix later this year, replacing the cancelled Australian GP, organisers have announced.
The race is scheduled to take place at Qatar’s Losail International Circuit on November 21 and will form the first part of a regional ending to the Formula One season. Races to follow in December will be hosted in neighbouring Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi.
Ooredoo, the international communications company, will be the title sponsor for the event.
Qatar also signed a 10-year deal to host Formula One from 2023. Read more
