The Benue State Commissioner of Police, Mr Omololu Bishi, has said the command has arrested two suspects, Tersoo Joseph, aka Adikpo, and Demenenge Iorwa, for allegedly raping a married woman and robbing her. Bishi said, “On February 9, 2019, around 6pm, some armed robbers operating on a motorcycle behind the Bem Hotels, Ankpa Quarters, Makurdi, abducted a woman and took her to the Quararafa Quarters, Wadata, where they raped and robbed her of a phone and N2,000. The Kwara State Police Command yesterday confirmed the attack on the campaign train of Kwara South senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Lola Ashiru, by suspected Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) thugs loyal to its Kwara South senatorial candidate, Senator Rafiu Ibrahim in Ojoku, Oyun Local Government Area. Police spokesperson Ajayi Okasanmi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said: “We received with astonishment the reported attack unleashed on Lola Ashiru, the APC senatorial candidate for Kwara South and his campaign train in Ojoku, Oyun Local Government Area, on Tuesday evening. Kwankwaso storms Lagos for Agbaje, Atiku (Punch)

A former governor of Kano State, Alhaji Rabiu Kwakwanso, on Tuesday joined the Lagos State governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Jimi Agbaje, to visit to the Serikin Hausawa of Agege, Lagos.

Kwankwanso and the PDP flag bearer were said to have visited Agege along with Agbaje’s running mate, Mrs Oluwayemisi Busari, a statement said on Wednesday.

Lagos motorists, commuters lament road closure after train derailment (Punch)

Motorists plying the Agege and Ikeja areas of Lagos through Ashade Market, Akanni Doherty and Oba Akran Avenue and residents of the areas have lamented the closure of the railway level crossing at the Ashade Market area by the Nigerian Railway Corporation.

The road from the Ashade level crossing through Akanni Doherty and Guinness Nigeria Plc to Oba Akran Avenue was shut by the NRC shortly after a train derailed in the area on January 10, 2019. Read more

Five domestic workers allegedly steal employer’s N105m gold jewellery (Punch)

Five domestic workers have been arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly breaking into their employer’s room and carting away her gold jewellery valued at N105m.

The defendants, Segun Akintola, 49; Tomisin Alade, 28; Felicia Musa, 23; Amaka Irozuru, 38; and Zakara Yau, 38, were arraigned on five counts bordering on conspiracy, housebreaking, stealing and possession of stolen items.

According to the police prosecutor, Inspector Raphael Donny, the defendants conspired among themselves and entered into the bedroom of their employer, Mrs Oluyemisi Wada, who had travelled out of the county, and stole her gold jewellery worth N105m. Read more

Court of Appeal fails to hear Onnoghen’s suits (Nation)

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has postponed its planned hearing of the three appeals filed by the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, to February 27. It was the third time, in one month, that the court will postpone hearing in the appeals filed against the decisions of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), before which the suspended CJN is standing trial for alleged breach of code of conduct for public officers. Justice Onnoghen is, by his first appeal, challenging the jurisdiction of the CCT to hear the charge against him, being a serving judicial officer. Read more

FG to address security concerns from fake phones (Punch)

The Office of the National Security Adviser, the Nigerian Communications Commission and other government agencies are set to address security concerns and cybercrime arising from the proliferation of fake phones in the country. To achieve this, they have set up two joint committees to combat fraudsters deploying their trade using fake and substandard mobile devices. At a meeting on Wednesday in Abuja, a Project Steering Committee comprising the Infrastructure Concession, and Regulatory Commission; the Federal Ministry of Communications and the NCC was formed. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) has arraigned one Lillian Bisi Kadiri before Justice Adebukola Banjoko of a Federal Capital Territory, (FCT) High Court, Maitama, on a one-count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretence. Lillian was alleged to have at various times, collected a total sum of N21, 450,000 from her victim in the guise that she was going to help secure jobs, for his relatives. She, however, failed to help secure any jobs, and did not refund the money collected. Read more

The Guinness World Records has formally ratified the feat after viewing footage of the match. which lasted over 60 hours at the Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club in Dublin last July.
