Udine Far East Film Festival: South Korea’s ‘Miracle: Letters to the President’ takes top prize
(THR)
South Korean romantic drama Miracle: Letters to the President was the big winner Sunday night at the closing ceremony of the 24th Far East Film Festival (FEFF), the popular Asian specialty event held each spring in the picturesque northern Italian city of Udine.
The film, directed and co-written by Lee Jang-hoon (Be With You), took home Udine’s top-prize Golden Mulberry award, which is decided annually by a popular vote of the festival’s public attendees. Described by organizers as “a sweet-natured hymn to the power of dreams,” Miracle tells the real-life story of a high school mathematics prodigy who works together with his family to bring a private train station to their remote rural community.
The Chinese film industry was the other big winner in Udine on Sunday. Box Office: ‘The Bad Guys’ leads quiet weekend with $16 million (Variety)
Another weekend, another new Liam Neeson action-thriller in theaters.
“Memory,” the actor’s nth COVID-era caper to play on the big screen, debuted over the weekend to $3.1 million from 2,555 North American cinemas. Its eighth-place finish is a weak result, but one that’s close to Neeson’s recent theatrical releases like “Blacklight” ($3.6 million debut), “Honest Thief” ($3.6 million debut) and “The Marksman” ($3.1 million debut).
Since Open Road Films and Briarcliff Entertainment’s “Memory” is the only new nationwide release, last weekend’s champion “The Bad Guys” topped the box office again. In its sophomore outing, the Universal Pictures animated heist comedy earned $16.1 million from 4,042 locations, bringing its domestic tally to $44.4 million.
“Mr. Neeson’s pre-pandemic crime pics did well, including the successful ‘Taken’ series, but audiences are showing little interest now,” says David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research. At the same time, there appears to be a very loyal demographic that is willing to return time and time again to watch the hulking Neeson avenge someone’s death. Read more

Violent May Day clashes break out in Paris against re-election of Macron (JerusalemPost)
Thousands of people joined May Day protests across France on Sunday to demand social justice and salary increases and to push newly re-elected President Emmanuel Macron to drop his plan to raise the retirement age.
Most rallies were peaceful but in Paris police intervened after black-clad “Black Bloc” anarchists tried to erect a barricade in a street near La Republique Square, police said. A McDonald’s restaurant and a real estate agency on the Place Leon Blum were also ransacked, their windows broken and garbage bins set on fire.
The cost of living was the main theme in the presidential election campaign and looks set to be equally prominent ahead of June legislative elections that Macron’s party and its allies must win if he is to be able to implement his pro-business policies, including increasing retirement age to 65 for 62.
About 250 rallies were organized in Paris and other cities including Lille, Nantes, Toulouse and Marseille. Read more
Neal Adams, comic book artist for both DC and Marvel, dies at 80 (LATimes)
Neal Adams, one of the most influential comic book artists of all time due to his transformative work on Batman, the Avengers and the X-Men, died Thursday due to complications from sepsis. He was 80.
Adams was one of the few artists who, early in his career, worked at both Marvel and DC Comics, helping chart the visual path for some of the most popular characters in comics. His most lasting influences would be on DC’s Batman, making him a darker character that moved away from the camp of the ‘60s, and on Marvel’s X-Men, which, though it was canceled in 1970 because of weak sales, was thought of as an artistic triumph that led to an ultimate revival, when it would become one of the company’s signature titles.
During his career, Adams co-created the characters Ra’s al Ghul, Man-Bat and John Stewart for DC Comics and the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent/hero Mockingbird and villain Sauron for Marvel. In terms of popular storylines, Adams drew Marvel’s ‘70s-era Kree-Skrull War saga and 1978’s “Superman Vs. Muhammed Ali” comic book, one of the last complete stories that Adams drew at DC before opening his own company, Continuity Associates, that focused on creating storyboards for films.
Adams was politically active in and beyond the comics industry and he famously helped lead efforts on behalf of Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster and their families to receive credit and financial compensation from DC. He was honored with many prestigious awards and inductions into halls of fame such as the Eisner Awards’ Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 1998, the Harvey Awards’ Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1999, and the Inkwell Awards’ Joe Sinnott Hall of Fame in 2019. Tottenham’s Antonio Conte has top-four fear despite Leicester win (Express)
Tottenham Hotspur head coach Antonio Conte admitted a big fear in the club’s hunt for Champions League football after Sunday’s 3-1 win against Leicester City. Conte’s side returned to fourth in the Premier League with victory in north London as his front three dazzled again.
Son Heung-min and Harry Kane combined for a record-extending 41st time in the Premier League before Dejan Kulusevski arrived from the bench to provide two assists for the South Korean. The victory helped Tottenham leapfrog Arsenal back into the top four ahead of the Gunners’ trip to West Ham United on Sunday evening.
After full-time, Conte hailed Son for his match-winning brace and the ability he showcased with both feet. But the Italian admitted that he’s grown concerned about the size of his squad and potential injuries, which could lead to ‘trouble’ for Spurs.
He said: “We are talking about a player with great skill and great ability. He’s very good with the left foot and the right foot, sometimes the question is ‘which is your favourite foot?’ I’m delighted for him and the strikers. Our squad is not so big, and we keep fingers crossed we don’t have many injuries because otherwise, we will be in trouble.” Read more
