Police in Anambra State have vowed to tackle any threat to peace arising from separatist elements, who plan to mark the Biafra Day celebration.
Already, some schools in Anambra have declared Friday a lecture-free day, because of threats from separatists.
The state police command said it had also made a strategic deployment of operatives to various areas, especially popular junctions to ensure that no threat to life arises.
A statement by the command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said operatives of the command were fired up and very motivated to face challenges.
Ikenga said a closed-door meeting of the Anambra Security Service Commanders had been held ahead of the “illegal Biafra Day celebration scheduled for May 30, 2025, by some criminal elements”.
Sector Commander of Sector 5, Operation Udo Ka, Colonel Adamu Kabiru Mohammed, gave the assurance while briefing the defence media team that the exams were scheduled to take place across Anambra State and the broader South-East region, where IPOB’s influence had previously disrupted public life.
Speaking to newsmen at his base in Orsumoghu, Ihiala Local Government Area, a region once considered a stronghold of IPOB and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network, Colonel Mohammad highlighted the joint efforts of various security agencies to safeguard examination centres during the IPOB-declared sit-at-home scheduled for May 29 and 30.
“All necessary arrangements have been made to ensure that students can sit for their WAEC exams without fear or disruption. We have intensified patrols around schools and potential hotspots to prevent any form of threat or violence,” he added. (Guardian)
