Binta Sukai: A queen for the ages

Binta Sukai was Miss Nigeria in 1990. The fashion consultant said in a recent interview that emerging Miss Nigeria back then still opens doors for her. The mother who refused to marry because she is quoted to have said she is afraid of divorce most likely because her parents went their separate ways while she was a child, was raised by her Scottish grandparents in the UK. As a matter of fact, it was while she was on holiday in the country that she contested, she said to pass the time, and won her Miss Nigeria crown.

The crown brought her to limelight in the 90s, making her the first northerner to be so crowned. And many years after she still looks fabulous. She continued to reside in the country for a few years after her reign, before returning to Europe and enrolling at the Paris Academy of Fashion, where she studied fashion and history. She has since made many appearances at Nigerian fashion shows, where she is often a judge including the Runways Dreamz in 2007, and the Young Designers Creative Design competition in 2009.

She was recently in the news when she announced the passing of her father, Major David Nana Sukai (rtd).

The beauty who has said that she had no idea she would be making history when she contested for Miss Nigeria in 1990, explained that she has been busy with some projects that entail a lot of travel within and outside the country.

“I did study Fashion History and Marketing after my A levels and my interest in it still remains strong. I already have a fashion line but not in Nigeria, but hoping to open soon in Nigeria,” she said in a recent interview.
