Boat Crash: Students corpses recovered, NIWA arrests operators (Punch)
The corpses of three medical students who went missing when the boat conveying them to a destination crashed in the Calabar area of Cross River State have been recovered.
The corpses consist of two male and female students.
The state Commissioner of Police, Gyogon Grimah, confirmed the development on Monday, adding that “The three corpses of the missing students have been recovered. The police have been working day and night to rescue the missing students.”
Grimah also commended people in the community for their efforts in recovering the corpses of the students and the rescue of 11 victims of the tragedy. Read more
7 die, 15 injured in Ogbomoso auto crash (Guardian)
About six people were confirmed dead, while 15 others sustained injuries in an auto crash involving a commercial bus and an articulated vehicle at Sekona on the Ogbomoso-Odo-Oba Road, Ogo Oluwa Local Council of Oyo State.
Also, a commercial motorcyclist died, yesterday morning, after he ran into a stationary vehicle at Gbede, very close to Ote, on the Ogbomoso-Ilorin Road, Surulere Local of the state.
According to the witnesses, the victims were all adult males and their remains have been deposited at the morgue at the Ladoke Akintola Teaching Hospital, while the injured were taken to Bowen University Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso for medical treatment. Read more
Election Tribunal: Sanwo-Olu, wife voted with invalid voters card – Witness (Vanguard)
A witness has told the Lagos State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal headed by Justice Arum Ashom, that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his wife, Ibijoke were allowed to cast their votes, despite their voter cards being invalid.
This testimony was given, on Monday, by an agent of the Labour Party, Dayo Israel, who was subpoenaed to testify in the petition filed by Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the Labour Party’s candidate, in the March 18 election, seeking to nullify the return of Gov. SanwoOlu and his deputy.
While being led in evidence by the Rhodes-Vivour’s lead counsel, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Olumide Ayeni, the witness told the court that he served as an agent for the Labour Party for Unit 006, Ward 15, Lagos Island Local Government in the Governorship Election. Read more
War on illicit drugs: Tinubu urges increased sensitisation for citizens (Nation)
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday called for increased and continued education of Nigerians, especially the youths and other vulnerable, on the dangers of drug abuse and the need to stop stigma and discrimination.
President Tinubu said this at this year’s edition of the United Nations (UN) Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking at the State House Conference Centre of the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Nigeria imposes annual fee for vehicle ownership verification (Guardian)
The Nigerian Government has introduced an annual fee of N1,000 to be paid by vehicle owners for Proof of Ownership Certificate (POC) verification.
Permanent Secretary, Lagos Ministry of Transportation, Abdulhafiz Toriola, made the announcement at a press conference on Tuesday.
He said the certificate will help vehicle owners and the government to guarantee the integrity of all vehicles registered on the National Vehicle and Identification Scheme (NVIS) database and track car theft and recovery of stolen vehicles. Read more
11 Queen’s College pupils depart for robotic competition in Australia (Punch)
Eleven students of Queen’s College, Lagos, are set to represent Nigeria at the First Lego League (FLL) Asia Pacific Open Championship in Sydney.
The students left Nigeria on Monday for Sydney, where they would participate in a robotics challenge starting June 29.
The students had, in 2021, clinched the first position in the Robotics National Competition, which qualified them to represent Nigeria in Greece for the FLL championship. Read more

The researchers examined the health records of 59 type 2 diabetes patients from a cardiac wellness program between 2007 and 2021, who followed a whole-food, plant-based eating pattern. The average age of the patients was 71.5 years, ranging from 41 to 89 years. Read more
Church demands answers after at least 48 die in gang fight in Honduran women’s prison (CNA)
The Catholic Church in Honduras has made an urgent appeal to the authorities to determine the circumstances in which 48 women inmates died June 20 inside the Women’s Center for Social Readaptation (CEFAS) in the town of Tamara, about 20 miles northwest of Tegucigalpa, the country’s capital.
According to local authorities, on June 20 there was a confrontation between rival gangs inside CEFAS, which unleashed a fire as well as shootings and stabbings.
The bishop emeritus of San Pedro Sula, Ángel Garachana Pérez, said on Twitter: “The tragedy repeats itself: 48 women burned to death or killed in CEFAS!” Read more

Co-creator of lithium-ion battery and the oldest Nobel winner dies at age 100 (Guardian)
John Goodenough, who shared the 2019 Nobel prize in chemistry for his pioneering work developing the lithium-ion battery that transformed technology with rechargeable power for devices ranging from cellphones and computers to pacemakers and electric cars, has died at 100, the University of Texas announced on Monday.
Goodenough died on Sunday at an assisted living facility in Austin, Texas, the university announced. No cause of death was given.
The American “was a leader at the cutting edge of scientific research throughout the many decades of his career”, said Jay Hartzell, president of the University of Texas at Austin, where Goodenough was a faculty member for 37 years. Read more
German foreign minister poses challenge to South Africa over its position on Russian war effort (ABC)
Germany’s foreign minister on Tuesday called for Russia “to stop the bombing” of Ukraine, a pointed message during a visit to South Africa as it draws accusations of aiding Moscow’s war effort.
Annalena Baerbock’s challenge came during a one-day visit to Pretoria that had been framed largely as focused on energy and climate issues.
But South Africa’s position on the war in Ukraine has been under close scrutiny since the U.S. Ambassador Reuben Brigety alleged that South Africa secretly loaded weapons onto a Russian ship that docked at a naval base near Cape Town in December. Read more

The news of his sentencing was confirmed in a tweet by former BBC World Football reporter, Osasu Obayiuwana.
Amoo was sentenced on Friday, June 23, 2023.

Levy would, however, likely prefer to sell Kane abroad if he is to let go of his most prised asset at all and German outlet Bild have claimed that an agreement in principle has been reached between Kane and Bayern – though the two clubs are yet to come to a compromise on a fee despite an initial £60 million bid on Monday.
