The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested popular cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky, in Lagos on Wednesday night. The arrest came following allegations of abuse of naira notes, currency mutilation and spraying of naira notes.
The EFCC’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the arrest, highlighting the seriousness with which the agency views the preservation of the integrity of the national currency. Oyewale emphasised that despite ongoing investigations, Bobrisky would face legal charges soon.
Bobrisky’s arrest comes amidst broader societal debates about cross-dressing and individual freedoms in Nigeria. Recently, discussions arose regarding the legality of cross-dressing, with ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi stating that while cross-dressing is not currently a punishable offence, it remains a complex issue.
This arrest adds to Bobrisky’s history of controversies, including defending his lifestyle choices and advocating for personal freedom. The crossdresser has faced criticism and scrutiny, most notably when he was awarded the best-dressed female at a movie premiere, sparking widespread debate.
The organisers have since withdrawn the award.
